Chapter 132: A New Blade

[Host. New weapon template unlocked.]

The System’s voice cut sudden and sharp through Julian’s focus mid-strike, and he felt something shift deep beneath his skin, a fresh, unfamiliar pressure building at the edge of his awareness.

’now,’ Julian thought, disbelief threading through the words even as he processed the timing. ’you’re telling me this now.’

Julian didn’t hesitate. He let the fan dissolve mid-motion, the familiar violet-gold light collapsing back into nothing, and threw himself upward instead, twisting into a tight, controlled spin in the open air above the training floor, reaching for the new, unfamiliar shape settling ready and waiting beneath his skin.

"summon," he said, the word carrying clear and sharp through the hall’s stunned silence.

Light gathered fast and brilliant around his outstretched hand, resolving mid-spin into something entirely new — a massive blade, black and gold, its hilt wrapped in dark leather and crowned with an ornate, wing-shaped guard, a deep violet gem set into the crossguard glowing faint and steady with the same power that had carried him through everything since waking chained in that stone room. The blade itself stretched long and lethal, etched gold filigree tracing intricate patterns down its length, catching the hall’s overhead light in sharp, gleaming flashes.

Julian landed in a low, controlled crouch, the massive sword settling into his grip with startling, immediate familiarity despite never having held it before, weight and balance already feeling like something that had simply been waiting for him all along.

The entire hall went utterly silent.

"that’s not—" someone near the front breathed, voice barely audible in the sudden, absolute quiet. "that wasn’t there a second ago."

"he just summoned an entirely new weapon," another voice managed, disbelief cracking through every syllable. "mid-fight. out of nowhere."

Logan stared at the blade now held loose and steady in Julian’s grip, exhaustion and fresh, dawning alarm crossing his features in equal measure. "that’s new," he managed, voice rough.

"very," Julian confirmed, testing the sword’s weight with a single, experimental swing, the blade cutting a clean, whistling arc through the air.

"this is insane," someone whispered near the back of the crowd, voice hushed with something close to awe now. "he’s still developing new abilities. in real time. during an actual fight."

"that’s it," another voice murmured, grim and certain. "that’s the end for Logan. nobody survives that kind of power gap."

Logan heard the murmur, jaw tightening, though he didn’t let the words shake his stance, forcing himself upright despite the trembling exhaustion still dragging at every limb. "well," he said, voice rough but steady, "guess I picked an interesting day to ask for a fair fight."

"you did," Julian agreed, something almost amused threading faint through his otherwise calm, unreadable tone as he studied the massive blade in his hand. "though for what it’s worth, this isn’t really fair either way. it never was."

"I know," Logan said. "doesn’t mean I’m stopping."

Julian’s mouth curved, faint and unreadable, and he moved.

The sword cut through the air with devastating, effortless power, Logan barely getting his own blade up in time to deflect the strike, the impact jarring hard enough up through his exhausted arms that his knees nearly buckled from the force alone. He staggered back, breathing hard, staring at his own weapon like he half expected to find it cracked from the impact.

"that’s—" he gasped, "that’s considerably heavier than the fan."

"seems that way," Julian agreed, already moving again, the massive blade carving another clean arc through the air that Logan barely managed to sidestep rather than block outright, the sheer force behind it clearly beyond anything his exhausted arms could hope to properly absorb.

Logan pressed forward anyway, exhausted and outmatched but refusing to yield, driving a fast, desperate combination that Julian deflected with the flat of the massive blade, the impact still sending Logan stumbling despite Julian’s obvious restraint.

"you’re pulling your strikes," Logan observed, breathless, catching himself before he could fully overbalance.

"I am," Julian confirmed. "this thing could probably cut clean through you if I let it. seems unnecessary, given the point of this exercise."

"appreciated," Logan managed, something wry cutting through his exhaustion despite everything.

The crowd watched in stunned, disbelieving silence, whispered speculation finally quieting entirely as the true scope of what they were witnessing settled properly into place — not simply a talented Guide with unusual combat ability, but something far beyond anything the Empire had ever produced, weapons and power still actively developing in real time, growing sharper and more dangerous with every single exchange.

"how many more of those does he have," someone finally whispered, voice hushed with something approaching genuine fear now.

"no idea," Reid murmured to Jayden, low enough that only the two of them could properly hear, watching the massive blade catch the light with grim, careful attention. "first the fan splitting into pieces. now this. whatever’s happening to him, it clearly hasn’t finished revealing itself all at once."

Jayden’s jaw tightened, watching the massive blade cut another clean arc through the air, Logan barely managing to stay upright under the sheer, overwhelming pressure of it. "god," he murmured. "if that’s not even his strongest form yet—"

"then we’d better hope whatever’s coming thinks twice before it actually shows up again," Reid finished grimly.

Logan pressed forward one final time, exhaustion and stubborn resolve both driving him past every reasonable limit his body had left to give, and Julian met the strike with the massive blade held steady, absorbing the impact with barely a fraction of visible effort, Logan’s own weapon finally, completely giving out under the pressure, the blade snapping clean in two with a sharp, ringing crack that echoed through the hall’s absolute silence.

Logan stared down at the shattered remains of his weapon, chest heaving, exhaustion finally, fully overwhelming him as his knees gave out entirely, sinking down onto the training floor in defeat too total to argue against any further.

Julian let the massive sword dissolve back into nothing, the violet-gold light fading soft and quiet, and stood where he was, studying Logan’s exhausted, defeated form from a distance, expression the entire hall still couldn’t properly read.

"you lost," Julian said quietly, no cruelty in the observation, simply fact.

"I know," Logan said, breathless, staring up at him from the floor, something desperate and hopeful still flickering behind his exhausted eyes despite everything.

"but you didn’t stop," Julian continued. "not once. even knowing exactly how badly outmatched you were."

"because I meant it," Logan said, voice cracking now, forcing himself to sit up despite his trembling arms. "everything I said. every night. I meant it, Julian, and I’ll keep proving it for as long as it takes—"

"maybe," Julian said, cutting him off, voice still calm, still even, and something in the flatness of it made Logan’s breath catch. "or maybe some things don’t come back just because you finally decided to fight for them."

The hall’s silence sharpened, uneasy now, several onlookers exchanging uncertain glances at the sudden, cooling shift in Julian’s tone.

"you had months," Julian said, quiet and level, no fury in it, which somehow made it worse. "months where a word, a single gesture, might have meant something. instead I got silence, and then I got humiliation, in front of everyone who mattered, and now I’m supposed to hand it all back because you finally showed up to lose a fight you knew you couldn’t win?"

Logan’s face went pale, the hope draining fast from his exhausted features. "Julian—"

"effort matters," Julian said, turning away from him, voice steady and final. "I meant that. but effort isn’t the same as time, and time isn’t something I can hand back to you no matter how hard you fight for it now."

He walked away without waiting for a response, the fox slipping silent from the shadows to fall into step beside him, and the training hall remained frozen in stunned, uncertain quiet behind him, Logan still kneeling amid the wreckage of his broken blade, staring after Julian’s retreating back with the slow, sinking understanding that some doors, once closed, didn’t reopen simply because someone finally found the courage to knock.
