Reborn as an SSS-Rank Guide in the Sentinel Academy [BL]

Chapter 109: The Word Broke Out

Dan stumbled through the Elite Academy’s corridors well past midnight, exhaustion dragging at every limb, his uniform still stained with blood and ash from hours spent stabilizing wounded Sentinels during the capital’s darkest hours. His guiding reserves sat scraped down to nearly nothing, hands trembling faintly even now, hours after the last emergency patient had finally been stabilized.

He should have gone straight to his own quarters. Instead, he found himself standing outside Mika’s door, knocking hard despite the late hour.

No answer came at first. Dan knocked again, harder.

The door finally opened, Mika blinking blearily in the doorway, hair mussed from sleep, expression somewhere between annoyed and groggy. "Dan," he said, voice thick. "do you have any idea what time it is."

"you missed it," Dan said, voice rough with exhaustion, disbelief still plain across his own drawn features. "Mika, you missed everything."

Mika rubbed at his eyes, unimpressed. "missed what. the zombies, I assume. I told you, that wasn’t my—"

"Julian," Dan said, cutting him off. "they found him."

Mika went very still.

"he was there," Dan continued, voice climbing with exhausted, disbelieving urgency now that the words had finally started spilling out. "at the capital. the whole time, fighting, disguised somehow, nobody even recognized him until his hood fell off in front of half the eastern line. he single-handedly held that defensive position for hours before the rest of us even arrived. and then something — something huge, Mika, something none of us have ever seen before — showed up and went straight for him, called him some kind of legend, tested him directly in front of everyone."

"tested him," Mika repeated slowly, something cold and unreadable crossing his expression.

"he survived it," Dan said. "whatever it was, he survived it, and the thing retreated, took the whole horde with it. we’re safe. the capital’s safe. because of him."

Mika’s jaw tightened, something complicated warring behind his exhausted, sleep-mussed features. "he’s alive," he said finally, voice flat.

"he’s in the academy’s medical wing," Dan said. "unconscious, from what I heard. but alive. Mika, the entire capital’s talking about it. Reid, Jayden, and Logan found him themselves, recognized him the second his hood fell off." He paused, something harder entering his exhausted voice. "the Emperor rode straight there the moment he heard. everyone’s saying Julian saved the entire city single-handedly, holding that line for hours before any of us even showed up."

Mika said nothing for a long moment, something tight and complicated flickering behind his eyes.

"you should have been there," Dan said quietly, the exhaustion in his voice finally cracking into something rawer, more honest. "we could have used every Guide we had. I watched people die tonight, Mika. people who might have made it if we’d had more hands helping. and you were here. sleeping."

"I told you," Mika said, voice sharpening defensively despite the guilt flickering beneath it, "that wasn’t my responsibility anymore—"

"it was everyone’s responsibility," Dan said, cutting him off, something raw and exhausted and finally, fully honest breaking through weeks of careful, complicit friendship. "the entire capital was burning, Mika. children were dying. and you decided your grudge against one Guide was more important than helping stop it."

Mika’s mouth opened, some defensive retort already forming, but the words died before he could voice them, something in Dan’s exhausted, disappointed expression cutting sharper than any argument could have.

"and now he’s the one who actually saved us," Dan continued, quieter now, though no less pointed. "the same person you’ve spent weeks trying to convince the noble council was some kind of manipulative fraud. he held that line alone, Mika. he faced something none of the rest of us even had the strength left to properly fight. and you were asleep, still complaining that the Empire never showed you proper gratitude."

Mika’s jaw clenched hard, humiliation and something that might have been shame both twisting uncomfortable behind his composed exterior. "the council hearing," he said slowly, changing the subject, though even his own voice carried less conviction now than it had before. "this doesn’t change anything about—"

"it changes everything," Dan said flatly. "you spent weeks building a case that Julian manipulated his way into power he didn’t deserve. and now half the Empire’s calling him a hero for single-handedly saving the capital from something that terrified even the Emperor’s own Sentinels. how exactly do you think that argument’s going to land now, Mika."

Mika had no answer for that, standing frozen in his own doorway, exhaustion and dawning, uncomfortable realization both settling heavy across his features.

"I have to go," Dan said finally, exhaustion clearly overtaking whatever anger had carried him this far. "I need actual sleep before my next shift starts. but Mika—" he paused, something tired and sad crossing his exhausted expression, "—I don’t think I can keep pretending your grudge is more important than what’s actually happening around us. not after tonight. not after what I watched people go through while you slept through it."

He left without waiting for a response, footsteps fading slow and heavy down the corridor, and Mika stood alone in his doorway for a long, silent moment, the words settling heavy and unwelcome in his chest.

He closed the door slowly, sinking back onto the edge of his bed, staring at nothing, the satisfaction he’d expected to feel at Julian’s survival notably absent, replaced instead with something colder and more uncomfortable he didn’t fully want to examine.

’he actually did it,’ Mika thought, turning the news over with grudging, reluctant disbelief. ’single-handedly. against something that terrified an entire army of Sentinels.’

He thought of Dan’s exhausted, disappointed face, of the raw, honest accusation sitting heavy in every word he’d said. He thought of the noble council, of the careful, deliberate case he’d spent weeks constructing, now standing on ground considerably shakier than it had a mere few hours earlier.

’it doesn’t matter,’ Mika told himself, the thought carrying less conviction than it once had. ’people forget heroics eventually. the council will still have questions. this doesn’t undo everything I’ve built.’

But even as he told himself that, some small, unwelcome part of his mind kept circling back to the image Dan had painted — Julian, alone, fighting for hours to protect a city that had spent weeks turning against him behind closed doors, while Mika himself had simply rolled over and gone back to sleep.

He lay back against his pillows, staring up at the ceiling, sleep refusing to properly return despite the late hour, the satisfaction he’d been chasing for weeks now feeling, for the first time, uncomfortably, distantly hollow.
