Chapter 108: Nothing but Weapons

Xavier and Ian knelt together in the ruined remains of their private chamber, the territory around them still smoking from the entity’s earlier assault, both brothers weakened and hollow from hours of having their own strength drained without warning or mercy.

The entity’s formless presence filled the space above them, vast and patient, returned now from the capital with something cold and final settling through its ancient, layered awareness.

*you defied me,* it said, voice carrying no anger, simply flat, absolute observation. *I told you to change nothing. and yet you moved to warn the very Empire I’ve spent this entire assault dismantling.*

Xavier’s head remained bowed, exhaustion and fear both dragging heavy at every limb. "we thought—"

*you thought,* the entity repeated, something almost amused threading cold through the words. *that is precisely the problem. thinking. independent judgment. the very qualities I permitted you both to retain, out of some misguided sentiment toward the children I first found that night, generations ago.*

Ian’s jaw tightened, though he said nothing, some old, buried instinct warning him that argument would accomplish nothing against something this vast and unmovable.

*you were built to serve,* the entity continued. *to expand. to consolidate. and instead, the moment something interesting enough appeared, you spent weeks fracturing against each other over him, disobeying direct instruction, nearly costing me the very asset I sent you to secure in the first place.* The formless presence drew closer, crushing and absolute. *inefficient. dangerous. exactly the kind of independent variance I should have corrected long before now.*

"please," Xavier said, voice cracking, some old, desperate fear from a night he barely remembered clearly surging back all at once. "whatever you’re planning—"

*I am correcting an oversight,* the entity said simply. *nothing more.*

The pressure surged sudden and absolute, and both brothers cried out at once, pain tearing through them in a way neither had experienced since the very night they’d first been made, something ancient and merciless reaching into the deepest parts of what remained of them and beginning, methodically, to strip it away.

Xavier’s mind fractured under the assault, memory after memory dissolving before he could properly hold onto any of it — his mother’s healing hands, his father’s steady voice, Ian’s exasperated affection catching him before every reckless fall, and beneath all of it, more recent and more painful, weeks of careful, possessive obsession, of a stubborn, defiant Guide who’d refused to break no matter what cruelty Xavier had thrown at him, of something that had felt, however twisted and unwelcome, disturbingly close to genuine feeling. All of it burned away.

*independence creates weakness,* the entity said, its voice the last coherent thing either brother registered as their own minds dissolved beneath its methodical, ancient will. *devotion creates vulnerability. I require neither from what remains of you.*

Ian’s own memories scattered in turn — the careful calculations, the cold, clinical distance he’d built as armor against grief he’d never properly allowed himself to feel, the strange, unfamiliar interest he’d begun developing toward someone who’d negotiated with him as an equal rather than either possessing or fearing him. All of it unraveled, thread by thread, until nothing remained but the entity’s own vast, patient will pressing into the empty space where two grieving, complicated brothers had once existed.

When the process finally finished, what knelt in the ruined chamber no longer resembled Xavier and Ian at all, not truly. Their faces remained the same, their bodies unchanged, but something vital and human had been stripped away entirely, replaced with cold, absolute purpose, power radiating off both of them now in vast, terrible waves far beyond anything either had possessed before.

*rise,* the entity said.

They rose in perfect, mechanical unison, expressions utterly blank, eyes hollow and empty in a way that carried none of the possessive warmth Xavier had once worn, none of the flat, calculating precision Ian had once carried. Just vast, silent obedience, waiting for instruction.

*you have new purpose now,* the entity said, something that might have been satisfaction rippling through its ancient, formless presence. *weapons. nothing more. you will not think, will not feel, will not deviate from my will ever again. and when the moment comes to finish what I’ve begun with the legend, you will not hesitate the way independent judgment once made you hesitate.*

Neither figure responded, standing utterly still and silent, awaiting command with the same hollow, absolute obedience the entity’s ordinary corrupted servants had always carried, except magnified now, sharpened into something far more dangerous, far more capable, than anything Xavier and Ian had ever created themselves.

*rest, for now,* the entity said. *gather strength. I have larger purposes for both of you before this is finished.*

The two figures remained motionless, waiting, and the entity’s formless presence began to withdraw, drifting back toward whatever vast, ancient distance it existed across when not directly manifesting, satisfaction cold and absolute rippling through its awareness at the successful correction of an oversight that had, for weeks, threatened its careful, patient design.

*soon, legend,* it thought, turning its attention once more toward the distant capital where Julian lay unconscious, healing, unaware of exactly what horror had just been forged in the wake of the entity’s earlier test. *you passed the first trial. but I have considerably more weapons at my disposal than you realize. let us see how you fare against creations built with nothing left to lose, nothing left to feel, nothing left to hold them back at all.*

---

In the ruined territory below, the two hollow, weaponized figures stood motionless amid the wreckage of everything they’d once built together, waiting in silent, absolute obedience for whatever purpose the entity intended for them next, every trace of the grieving, complicated brothers who’d once fought so bitterly over Julian’s affection now erased entirely, replaced with nothing but cold, patient, terrible readiness.

Somewhere far to the south, unaware of what had just been made in his wake, Julian slept on in the academy’s medical wing, healing slowly from wounds both physical and otherwise, while the people who loved him kept careful, desperate vigil at his side, none of them yet knowing exactly what new danger had just been forged from the ashes of the two men who’d once held him captive.
