Reborn as an SSS-Rank Guide in the Sentinel Academy [BL]

Chapter 104: What’s Happening

Logan drove his blade through the last rogue in his section of the line, breathing hard, sweat and blood mixing at his temple after hours of unrelenting combat alongside the Elite Academy’s contingent.

"that’s the last of them here," the captain of the Elite Academy said, wiping his blade clean with grim satisfaction, surveying the cleared perimeter with exhausted relief. "good work, all of you."

Logan barely had time to nod before a runner burst through their formation, breathless and urgent. "Commander Calloway’s position needs support, east side! something massive has appeared, something’s happening there—"

Logan’s exhaustion burned away instantly, replaced by sharp, immediate alarm. "how massive," he demanded.

"I don’t know how to describe it properly," the runner said. "it’s not like anything we’ve faced before. Commander Calloway and Prince Jayden are trying to hold, but—"

"move!" the captain barked, already turning to rally the assembled Sentinels and Guides. "eastern line, full support, now!"

They crossed the distance fast, cutting through scattered stragglers along the way, and Logan’s chest tightened with dread the closer they drew, some old, unnamable instinct warning him before he even fully understood what waited ahead.

They arrived to a scene that stopped every single one of them cold.

The eastern battlefield had gone eerily still, the horde frozen in unnatural, rigid formation, every gray head turned toward the same singular point where a vast, formless shape hovered, shadow and static bending in ways that made Logan’s eyes ache just trying to focus on it directly. Reid and Jayden stood a short distance away, weapons raised but clearly holding back, some invisible, crushing pressure keeping them from closing the final stretch of ground toward whatever confrontation was unfolding at the field’s center.

And there, standing rigid and alone beneath the entity’s vast, ancient presence, was a hooded figure Logan had never seen before in his life.

"what in the world," the captain breathed, staring at the impossible scene.

Logan pushed forward toward Reid’s position, breathless, the crushing pressure radiating off the entity growing sharper and more oppressive with every step closer he took. "Reid," he said, voice tight, "what’s happening. who is that."

Reid didn’t look away from the standoff, jaw tight, exhaustion carved deep into every line of his face. "we don’t know," he said. "he showed up hours ago. fought beside us the whole time, saved my life more than once, never said more than a handful of words." His voice dropped lower, careful, uncertain. "and now that thing’s fixated entirely on him. it’s been talking to him like it knows him from somewhere, though nothing about what it’s said actually confirms anything."

Logan’s stomach twisted, dread and confusion both tangling together. "you think—"

"I don’t think anything yet," Reid said, cutting him off, voice firm despite the exhaustion. "I can’t see his face. I don’t have a name, a voice I recognize, nothing solid. all I know is that thing wants him specifically, badly enough to ignore the rest of us entirely."

Jayden stood a short distance away, gold light flickering weak but steady around his exhausted fists, watching the standoff with tight, guarded focus, careful not to let hope run ahead of what little he actually knew.

The captain of the Elite Academy stepped up beside them, studying the scene with sharp, professional focus despite his own exhaustion. "whatever that thing is," he said, "it’s powerful enough to hold an entire horde frozen with nothing but presence alone. we don’t have the numbers or strength to force our way through that kind of pressure directly."

"then what do we do," Logan demanded, voice cracking with frustration and fear both. "just stand here and watch."

"for now," Reid said grimly, "yes. because the moment any of us try to close that distance, we risk drawing its attention away from him and toward the rest of this line, and I don’t know if we survive that kind of attention directed at all of us at once."

Logan’s hands curled into fists, every protective instinct screaming against the forced, helpless stillness, watching a stranger stand alone against something ancient and vast with no way to properly help.

*you carry something this world never gave you,* the entity’s voice curled across the battlefield, carrying easily to every straining ear present, layered and vast. *a will that refuses to bend, sharpened by things no one here would understand. rare. I find myself curious just how far it extends.*

Logan’s breath caught, some fragment of unease crawling up his spine at the words, though nothing in them offered any real confirmation of who stood beneath that hood. "what’s it talking about," he murmured.

"I don’t know," Reid admitted, jaw tight. "it’s been saying things like that since it arrived. cryptic. like it’s testing him, or studying him, more than actually threatening him outright."

The captain of the Elite Academy studied the three of them with sharp, careful attention. "you all seem unusually invested in a stranger none of you claim to know."

"we’ve been searching for someone," Reid said carefully, deliberately vague, unwilling to voice the fragile, unproven hope building quietly in his own chest. "for weeks. it’s possible, but only possible, that this could be connected somehow."

The entity’s vast, formless presence shifted suddenly, drawing back slightly from the hooded figure, its layered, ancient voice curling once more across the frozen, silent battlefield.

*very well,* it said. *let us begin properly, legend. show me exactly what you’re capable of.*

Every exhausted Sentinel and Guide still standing along the eastern line tensed at once, weapons rising on instinct despite the crushing pressure still radiating outward, watching the vast, formless shape draw back into something resembling readiness, the hooded stranger squaring his stance in response, fan finally beginning to spin loose and ready at his side once more.

"whatever’s about to happen," Reid said, voice hard with grim, exhausted resolve, "we need to be ready to move the second there’s an opening. I don’t care who he turns out to be. we’re not standing here doing nothing while he faces that alone."
