Chapter 103: The Unknown Stranger

The messenger sprinted through the war room’s doorway so fast he nearly collided with the map table, chest heaving, face pale with a fear that went beyond simple exhaustion.

"Your Majesty," he gasped, "something’s happened at the eastern line. something— I don’t even know how to describe it properly."

The Emperor rose sharply from his seat, exhaustion forgotten in an instant. "report. now."

"the horde stopped fighting," the messenger said, forcing the words out between ragged breaths. "all of it, at once, like something pulled every single creature to attention simultaneously. and then something appeared. something massive. formless. it didn’t look like any Aberration I’ve ever seen, Your Majesty. it didn’t even look like it had a proper shape at all."

The remaining officers in the war room went utterly still, the weight of the description settling heavy and cold across the exhausted assembly.

"the entity," the Emperor said slowly, dread crawling up his spine. "it’s actually here. at the capital."

"that’s not all," the messenger continued, voice shaking now. "there’s someone else. a stranger. hooded, unrecognizable, fighting alongside Commander Calloway and Prince Jayden’s position for the last several hours. he’s— Your Majesty, he’s been carving through the horde almost single-handedly. speed and precision like nothing I’ve ever witnessed. teleporting, wielding some kind of weapon that shifts shape mid-combat."

The Emperor’s jaw tightened, a fresh, urgent question cutting sharp through his exhaustion. "and this entity. did it engage the defensive line."

"no," the messenger said. "that’s the strange part. it went straight for the hooded stranger. spoke to him directly, like it already knew him somehow, even through whatever disguise he’s wearing." He hesitated, something uncertain crossing his exhausted features. "I heard some of it before I was ordered to run this report back. the entity kept saying things like it had been watching him for weeks. that it recognized something about him specific enough to single him out of an entire battlefield."

The war room fell into heavy, uneasy silence, every officer present exchanging uncertain, alarmed glances.

"So you’re saying," Reid’s second-in-command said slowly, stepping forward from where she’d been coordinating supply logistics, "that whatever this entity actually is, it isn’t attacking the capital indiscriminately. it came specifically for this one stranger."

"that’s what it looked like," the messenger confirmed. "Commander Calloway and Prince Jayden tried to intervene, but the pressure radiating off that thing dropped half the surrounding line to their knees just from proximity. nobody could get close enough to actually help him."

The Emperor’s hands curled slowly into fists against the map table, mind racing through the implications with sharp, desperate focus. "who is he," he said finally. "this stranger. does anyone have any indication at all of his identity."

"no, Your Majesty," the messenger said. "nobody recognized him. Commander Calloway said something about his fighting style feeling strangely familiar, but he couldn’t place it, and there wasn’t time to investigate further before the entity fully manifested."

Something cold and cautious settled behind the Emperor’s exhausted eyes, a thought forming slow and reluctant that he didn’t dare voice aloud yet, not without more certainty than a messenger’s frantic, secondhand account could provide.

"send reinforcements to that position immediately," the Emperor said instead, voice hard with renewed, urgent command. "whatever this entity wants with that stranger, we cannot simply let it take him unopposed, whoever he turns out to be. and get me everything available on any Sentinel or Guide capable of the abilities you just described — teleportation, shape-shifting weaponry, morphing physical appearance. I want to know if anything in this Empire’s records matches what you just witnessed."

"understood, Your Majesty," the officer said, already moving to relay the order.

The war room exploded into fresh, urgent motion, and the Emperor remained frozen at the map table a moment longer, staring down at the marked eastern position with something fragile and dangerous flickering behind his exhausted composure.

’it can’t be,’ he thought, forcing the wild, desperate hope back down beneath careful, cautious restraint. ’don’t let yourself hope for something like that. not until you have proof.’

But the thought refused to fully die, lodged stubborn and persistent beneath every ounce of careful discipline he tried to apply against it.

Reid’s second-in-command found him minutes later, breathless from crossing half the city at a dead sprint, relaying the Emperor’s orders with sharp, urgent focus. "reinforcements are inbound," she reported. "the Emperor wants confirmation on the stranger’s identity, whatever it takes to get it."

Reid, still standing near the eastern breach, exhausted and battered from hours of continuous fighting, stared toward the vast, formless entity still looming over the battlefield’s edge, the hooded stranger standing rigid and unmoving beneath its crushing, ancient presence.

"I don’t know who he is," Reid admitted, voice rough. "but whoever he is, that thing wants him specifically. badly enough that it’s ignoring the rest of us entirely to focus on him."

"the Emperor wants to know if his abilities match anything on record," the officer said. "teleportation. shape-shifting. a weapon that changes form."

Reid’s jaw tightened, something uneasy and unplaceable nagging harder at the back of his exhausted mind now that he had time to properly consider it. He thought of the way the stranger moved — economical, precise, no wasted motion, the same brutal, efficient combat style he’d watched someone else fight with, weeks and weeks ago, in a clearing far to the north.

’no,’ he told himself firmly. ’don’t. don’t let yourself hope for that. it’s been too long. it doesn’t make sense.’

But the thought lingered anyway, refusing to fully dissolve, and Reid found himself staring harder at the hooded figure’s stance, at the careful, deliberate way he held his ground against something powerful enough to bring an entire army to its knees.

Jayden appeared at his side moments later, breathing hard, gold light flickering weak but steady around his exhausted fists. "the reinforcements won’t reach us in time if that thing decides to act," he said grimly. "whatever’s about to happen, it’s happening now, whether we’re ready or not."

Reid nodded slowly, unable to look away from the standoff still unfolding at the field’s edge, the vast, ancient entity drifting closer to the hooded stranger with slow, deliberate menace.

"whoever you are," Reid murmured, quiet enough that only Jayden could hear him, "please. survive this."

Jayden glanced toward him, something complicated crossing his exhausted expression. "you think it’s—"

"I don’t know what to think," Reid said, cutting him off, though the desperate, fragile hope in his own voice betrayed exactly how hard he was trying not to think it anyway. "I just know I’m not losing whoever that is without a fight, entity or not."

The two of them moved forward together despite the crushing pressure still radiating off the entity’s presence, weapons raised, determined to close the distance and offer whatever help they could manage, even against odds that felt, with every step, increasingly and terrifyingly impossible.
