Chapter 60: A Hundred Voices
The taller of the two figures tilted his head slightly, studying the exhausted, bloodied search party with lazy, unbothered interest, as though the dozen weapons trained on him were a mild curiosity rather than any real threat. His companion mirrored the motion exactly, down to the precise angle of the tilt, like the two of them were reflections rather than separate people standing several feet apart.
"you should turn back," he said, and his voice, when it came, wasn’t singular at all... it layered and overlapped with itself, dozens upon dozens of voices speaking in perfect, unsettling unison, young and old, male and female, all braided together into one impossible sound pouring from a single mouth. "or you will face the worst of your nightmares."
The second figure spoke at exactly the same moment, in perfect sync, the same chorus of overlapping voices rolling out from his mouth too, so precisely matched it was impossible to tell where one ended and the other began, the sound doubling and layering further until it seemed to come from everywhere in the clearing at once rather than two specific points.
"we don’t wish to hurt you unnecessarily," they said together, the layered voices carrying an eerie, patient calm entirely at odds with the devastation still smoking faintly around the fallen Sentinels nearby. "but if you don’t leave, we will fight you. and you have already seen what waits for those who linger too long in this territory."
Reid’s grip tightened hard on his blade, every instinct screaming at the sheer wrongness of the sound pouring out of them, the impossible chorus of voices that shouldn’t have been able to exist in a single throat, let alone two throats speaking in perfect, matched unison, as though some vast collective intelligence had simply borrowed two mouths to speak through at once.
"who are you," the Emperor demanded, voice hard despite the exhaustion and grief still etched deep into his expression, refusing to let his composure crack further in front of an enemy this unnatural. "what are you."
"names," the figures said together, something almost amused threading through the layered chorus, "matter less than choices right now. and your choice is simple. leave, or don’t."
Movement rippled through the tree line on every side at once, gray shapes emerging from shadow in every direction, dozens of them, then dozens more, the toxic haze doing nothing to slow their advance the way it had torn through the Sentinels only minutes before, moving with the same unnerving, coordinated precision the twins themselves seemed to command.
"they’re surrounding us," Jayden said, voice tight, gold light flaring bright around his fists as he pivoted to face the closing ranks, exhaustion warring visibly with the adrenaline forcing him back onto his feet. "on every side..."
"formation!" Reid barked, and what remained of the search party scrambled into a tight defensive circle around the Emperor once more, exhausted bodies bracing for another wave they were nowhere near equipped to survive, blades and gold light forming the last, fragile barrier between the group and whatever waited beyond it.
The two figures watched the scramble with the same unbothered calm, neither moving to join the advancing horde themselves, simply observing, patient and amused, as though the outcome of this entire confrontation was already settled in their minds and the rest was simply formality they didn’t need to personally participate in.
"last chance," they said together, voices layering thick and heavy in the toxic air, carrying easily over the growing snarls and shuffling advance of the surrounding horde. "leave now, and we let you walk away with the survivors you still have. stay, and we take everyone."
"we’re not leaving without Julian," Logan said fiercely, weapon raised despite the obvious exhaustion dragging at his stance, voice cracking slightly on the name but never wavering in conviction.
Something flickered behind both figures’ eyes at the name, identical and simultaneous, a flash of shared recognition that sent a fresh chill down Reid’s spine, like watching one thought pass through two separate skulls at exactly the same moment.
"ah," they said together, tone shifting into something colder, sharper, layered voices dropping half a register in perfect, unnerving unison. "so that’s what this is about. the little Guide everyone’s so desperate to reclaim."
"you know where he is," the Emperor said sharply, some fresh urgency cutting through his grief and exhaustion both.
"we know a great many things," the figures replied, and this time something almost mocking curled through the layered chorus. "whether we choose to share any of them depends entirely on what happens in the next few minutes."
The horde surged forward without further warning, gray shapes converging from every angle at once, and the exhausted search party braced hard, weapons rising, gold light and cold steel forming the only barrier between them and a wave of hunger that had already proven, brutally, how fast it could overwhelm even prepared defenses.
"hold the line!" Reid shouted, driving his blade through the nearest rogue before it could close the distance, the impact jarring hard up through his already-exhausted arm. "don’t let them break formation..."
Jayden’s gold light exploded outward in a wide, sweeping arc, catching three rogues at once and sending them crashing back into the tree line, but more kept coming, endless and relentless, pressing in from every side with the same terrible, coordinated precision that made this horde so much more dangerous than any they’d faced before.
The Emperor, gripping his ceremonial blade with white-knuckled resolve, cut down a rogue that strayed too close, years of formal training finally proving useful outside of ceremony and diplomacy, though the strain of real combat showed plainly across his features.
Logan fought at the edge of the formation, weapon flashing in brutal, controlled strikes, but even his considerable skill was beginning to falter under the sheer, unending pressure of the horde’s advance, sweat and blood mixing at his temple from a shallow wound he had no time to properly tend.
Through it all, the two figures remained exactly where they’d been standing, content to let the horde do the work while they simply observed from a safe distance, expressions unreadable and eerily identical even as chaos exploded around them, watching the battle unfold with the same patient, layered calm as everything else they’d said and done since arriving.
"they’re not even fighting themselves," Reid realized aloud, breathless, driving back another wave of rogues. "they’re just watching. testing us."
"does it matter," Jayden shot back, "if the end result is the same?"
The Emperor, gripping his blade tight, watched the twin figures step back further from the fray entirely, retreating into the shadow of the tree line while the horde pressed harder, and something cold and furious settled behind his exhausted eyes at the casual, detached cruelty of it, watching people suffer and die simply to gauge their resolve.
"what the hell," the Emperor breathed, staring at the impossible, layered wrongness of the two men still standing calm at the edge of the chaos they’d unleashed without lifting a single hand themselves, "are those things."
