Chapter 59: Worse Than Expected
The toxic zone stretched out ahead of them, pale and sickly under gray afternoon light, and Reid could feel wrongness pressing in against his skin the moment the search party crossed its boundary, even through the layers of specialized protective gear they’d spent days preparing. The air itself felt heavier here, thick with something that clung to the back of the throat despite the filtered masks meant to keep it out entirely.
"stay close," he called back over his shoulder. "protection or not, we don’t linger longer than necessary."
The Emperor moved near the center of the formation, flanked tightly on all sides despite his earlier insistence on independence, jaw set and eyes sharp as he surveyed the blighted landscape stretching out before them... twisted, gray-tinged trees stripped bare of leaves, patches of ground where nothing grew at all, the soil itself cracked and pale like something had burned through it from underneath. A faint, sickly-sweet wrongness hung in the air even through their filtered masks, cloying and persistent.
"this is worse than the reports suggested," Jayden muttered, scanning the terrain with visible unease, gold light flickering low and steady around his knuckles as though his body had already braced itself for a fight before his mind caught up.
"significantly worse," Reid agreed grimly, eyes tracking every shift in shadow, every rustle of dead branches that might mean something worse than wind.
They were perhaps a quarter mile into the zone when the first Sentinel stumbled.
"Corven, report," Reid called sharply, watching the man sway on his feet, gauntleted hand rising slow and uncertain toward his own mask, fingers fumbling clumsily at the straps like he couldn’t quite remember how they worked.
"I’m... I’m fine, I just..." Corven’s voice cracked, thin and strained, and then, horrifyingly, his knees buckled entirely, collapsing hard onto the blighted ground, body seizing in short, violent spasms.
"the protection’s failing," someone shouted from further back in the formation, voice climbing toward panic. "it’s not holding, the toxin’s getting through anyway, I don’t understand how..."
Panic rippled fast through the ranks as more Sentinels began to stumble, one after another, gray patches blooming visible even through cracks in their protective gear, faster and more aggressive than anything they’d encountered before, spreading in seconds rather than the slow, gradual progression they’d all trained and prepared for.
"fall back to the boundary!" Reid bellowed, but it was already too late for several of them, bodies twisting, convulsing, the horrifying transformation taking hold with a speed that stole any chance of retreat.
Corven was the first to turn fully, gray skin splitting along old scars, eyes going hollow and hungry, and before anyone could react he lunged at the nearest Sentinel with a shriek that tore raw through the toxic air.
"he’s turned!" Logan shouted, weapon already rising, horror and grim resolve warring plainly across his face. "everyone, defensive positions, NOW..."
Chaos erupted across the formation, Sentinels scrambling to defend against comrades who moments ago had been standing shoulder to shoulder with them, the horror of striking down someone they’d trained beside for years freezing more than one soldier’s blade at the critical moment, costing precious seconds that several of them didn’t survive to regret.
"protect the Emperor!" Reid roared, already moving, cutting a path through the confusion toward the center of the formation where Jayden and Logan had already closed ranks tight around him, weapons raised in a defensive wall against the spreading chaos.
The Emperor’s face had gone pale, watching two more Sentinels collapse and turn within seconds of each other, the horrifying speed of the infection here in the toxic zone nothing like the slower spread they’d encountered before at the academy.
"this is far worse than any report prepared us for," the Emperor said, voice tight, gripping the ceremonial blade at his hip with white-knuckled resolve as Reid, Jayden, and Logan formed a protective wall around him, driving back the small handful of turned Sentinels that stumbled too close.
"stay behind us," Reid said, blade already slick with the same dark, corrupted blood he’d grown sickeningly familiar with over these past weeks. "whatever happens, you do not break formation. that’s an order, and I don’t care whose title outranks mine right now."
The Emperor didn’t argue, though the grim, horrified understanding dawning behind his eyes made it clear exactly how badly this expedition had already gone wrong before they’d even gotten close to actually finding Julian.
Jayden cut down another turned Sentinel with visible anguish twisting his features, gold light flashing bright against the blighted landscape, jaw clenched tight against the grief of it. "we can’t keep losing people like this," he said, breathless. "we barely made it a quarter mile in, and we’ve already lost... god, how many have we already lost..."
"then we go no further until we understand exactly what we’re dealing with," Reid said, forcing the formation into a tight defensive circle, blades and gold light forming a protective wall around the Emperor while the remaining Sentinels regrouped, exhausted and shaken, breathing hard behind cracked and failing masks.
The chaos finally began to settle, the last of the turned Sentinels put down with grim, necessary finality, and for a long, heavy moment the survivors simply stood there amid the wreckage, breathing hard, staring at losses none of them had been prepared to suffer this early into the search, faces pale with grief and horror both.
"we barely made a dent," Logan said quietly, voice raw, staring down at the fallen with something hollow behind his eyes. "and we’ve already lost this many good people."
The Emperor’s face had gone hard and pale, staring out at the blighted terrain stretching endlessly ahead, the full, horrifying scope of what they were up against finally, truly sinking in. "if this is what waits at the edge of their territory," he said, voice low, "I dread to think what’s waiting closer to the center. and Julian’s been trapped somewhere inside all of this."
Reid said nothing, jaw tight, scanning the ruined landscape ahead with a growing, sick certainty that this rescue was going to cost far more than any of them had accounted for, no matter how carefully they’d planned it.
A slow clap echoed from somewhere just beyond the tree line.
Every remaining weapon snapped up at once, exhausted arms straightening despite the strain, and two figures emerged from the blighted shadows, moving with an easy, unhurried grace entirely at odds with the horror surrounding them. Both were young, strikingly handsome despite the telltale gray tint beneath their skin, dressed impeccably in a way that felt deeply, unsettlingly wrong against the ruined landscape they walked through like it was simply their garden, untouched by the toxin that had just torn through half the search party in minutes.
"well, well, well," the taller of the two said, tone light and amused, eyes sweeping across the exhausted, bloodied search party with open curiosity, utterly unbothered by the dozen weapons now trained squarely on him. "what do we have here?"
