Chapter 49: The Signal

The fox’s small body trembled with effort, golden light pulsing steady and slow at its chest, tails curled tight in concentration as it reached outward with everything it had left.

"almost," it whispered, strain evident in every syllable. "just... a little further..."

Julian watched, holding his breath, hands curled tight into the blanket beneath him, willing the small, fragile light to somehow carry further than it had any right to.

[Signal partially transmitted,] the System reported quietly, a faint echo bleeding through even without the fox’s usual chatter. [Range limited. Directional data only. Cannot confirm reception.]

’directional data,’ Julian thought, hope flaring despite the caveat. ’that’s something. that’s better than nothing.’

The fox slumped forward the moment the light faded, breathing hard, clearly spent. "that’s all I have," it said. "I don’t know if it reached anyone. I don’t know if it was even enough to register as anything but noise."

"it’s enough," Julian said, though he had no real way of knowing that. "it has to be."

---

Miles away, at the edge of the mountain range where Julian had first vanished, Reid stood scanning the jagged terrain with sharp, exhausted focus, Jayden and Logan flanking him on either side, a full search party spread out behind them combing every crevice and ledge for any trace at all.

A faint, strange pulse rippled through the air, gone almost as soon as it arrived, but Reid’s whole body went rigid the instant he felt it, some old instinct screaming that it meant something.

"did you feel that," he said sharply.

Jayden frowned, brow furrowing. "feel what?"

"something," Reid said, already moving, eyes scanning the ridge line with renewed intensity. "that was... I don’t know what that was, but it felt like a direction. like something calling from over there." He pointed toward a distant slope, barely visible through the haze of afternoon heat.

Logan was already moving. "then that’s where we go."

---

Xavier felt it too. He stood at the edge of his territory, eyes narrowing sharply the instant that same faint pulse rippled through the air, recognition slamming through him hard and immediate.

"there you are," he murmured, something cold and satisfied cutting through the fury that had consumed him for hours. "clever fox. but not clever enough."

He turned fast, voice snapping out sharp and commanding to the corrupted forces still scattered across his search radius. "redirect everything toward the western settlements," he ordered. "that signal came from somewhere with a human presence. a house. a village. something small enough to hide in plain sight. find it before anyone else does."

The search, which had been sprawling and unfocused for hours, snapped suddenly into sharp, deadly precision, dozens of rogues and several high-class Aberrations converging on a single direction with terrifying speed.

---

Back at the old couple’s home, Julian felt it before he understood what it meant... a cold, crawling unease settling deep into his gut, the same instinctive dread that had kept him alive through three years of a collapsing world.

"something’s wrong," he said, pushing himself upright despite the ache still dragging at every limb. "fox, do you feel that?"

The fox’s ears shot up, eyes going wide with alarm. "he felt the signal too," it said, horror dawning fast. "I didn’t think... I didn’t consider that he might be listening for exactly this. I’m sorry, host, I may have just told him exactly where to look."

Julian’s blood ran cold. "how much time do we have."

"not much," the fox said. "we need to move. now."

Julian was already forcing himself off the bed, legs shaking but holding, adrenaline burning through exhaustion in a way that wouldn’t last but would have to be enough for now. He stumbled toward the door, calling out for the old couple with as much urgency as his still-recovering voice could manage.

"we need to leave," Julian said, bursting into the small kitchen where they sat finishing their evening meal, utterly unaware of the danger closing in. "right now. pack only what you can carry fast. please, I’ll explain everything, but we don’t have time..."

The old woman’s face paled at his tone, and her husband was already rising, decades of quiet trust in Julian’s judgment apparently enough to move without further argument. "where do we go," he asked, voice tight.

"anywhere but here," Julian said. "away from the main roads. into the trees, if we have to."

They moved fast, gathering only the barest essentials, and Julian forced his aching body into motion alongside them, the fox darting ahead to scout the safest path, every passing second feeling like it might be the one where everything fell apart.

---

The search party reached the ridge just as the sun began sinking low, the strange directional pulse Reid had felt still lingering faint at the edge of his senses, guiding them steadily toward a stretch of quiet farmland dotted with small, scattered homes.

"there," Reid said, pointing toward a thin trail of smoke rising from a modest farmhouse in the distance. "that’s the direction. that has to be it."

They picked up their pace, urgency driving every step, and it was Logan who first spotted the shapes moving through the fields beyond the house... dozens of them, gray and shambling and fast, closing in on the same farmhouse from the opposite direction.

"Aberrations," Logan shouted, already breaking into a dead sprint. "they’re heading for the same house... MOVE!"

Jayden’s gold light flared to life around his fists as he tore ahead, Reid close behind, the rest of the search party scrambling to keep pace, all of them converging on the same small, unassuming farmhouse from one side while a horde of corrupted creatures bore down on it from the other.

"whoever’s in that house," Reid shouted, blade already drawn, "hold on. we’re almost there..."

---

Julian burst out the back door of the farmhouse with the old couple close behind him, the fox streaking ahead into the tree line, and the first low, guttural moan reached them from somewhere frighteningly close in the gathering dusk.

"they’re already here," Julian said, pulse hammering, positioning himself instinctively between the couple and the sound. "get behind me. stay close."

The old man pulled his wife back several steps, both of them trembling but silent, trusting Julian’s judgment completely even now.

Shapes emerged from the tree line ahead, gray and hungry, dozens of them, moving with terrible, coordinated speed, and Julian, exhausted and weakened and still recovering from a displacement that should have kept him bedridden for weeks, planted his feet anyway, hands curling into fists.

"I’m not letting them reach you," Julian said, voice hard despite the tremor of exhaustion running through every word. "not after everything."

The horde surged forward. And from the opposite tree line, cutting through the chaos like a blade through fog, came a voice Julian hadn’t heard in what felt like a lifetime, sharp and furious and achingly familiar.

"JULIAN!"
