Chapter 48: What We Know Now
The war room fell into stunned silence when Reid laid it out plainly... the creature, the disguise, how long it had been walking the academy halls wearing Julian’s face while the real one had been missing this entire time, not recovered days ago the way everyone believed.
The Emperor stood at the head of the table, hands braced flat against the wood, expression unreadable in a way that unsettled Reid more than open fury would have.
"say that again," the Emperor said quietly. "slowly."
"the person who returned four days after the mountain wasn’t Julian," Reid said, forcing the words out steady despite the guilt sitting heavy in his own chest. "it was something wearing his face. which means the real Julian never made it back at all. he’s been missing this entire time. we’ve been searching for the wrong person for over a week."
The silence that followed felt physical, pressing down on the whole room.
"I held him," the Emperor said finally, voice low, something raw cracking through the careful composure he usually wore like armor. "I sat with him. I touched that... that thing, believing it was him, and the entire time..."
He didn’t finish the sentence, jaw tightening hard enough that the muscle jumped visibly, and for the first time since Reid had known him, the Emperor looked less like an untouchable ruler and more like a man who’d just discovered how thoroughly he’d been played.
"we all did," Reid said quietly. "I nearly caught it days ago. I let myself be talked out of my own instincts because it cried and told me it was scared. I should have pushed harder."
Jayden stood near the window, arms wrapped tight around himself, staring out at nothing, his usual easy confidence completely gone. "he’s been out there this whole time," he said, voice thick. "alone. hurt, probably. thinking we’d given up on him, while we were sitting here comforting a monster wearing his skin."
"we didn’t give up," the Emperor said sharply, some of his usual iron snapping back into his voice. "we were deceived. But that ends now."
---
Logan received the news standing in the middle of the training yard, and for a long moment simply didn’t react at all, the words refusing to fully land.
"So it wasn’t him," he repeated slowly, numb. "this whole time. every conversation. every apology I made. every moment I thought we were finally..." He stopped, something breaking visibly across his face. "I told a monster I still loved him."
"Logan..." one of the Sentinels nearby started, careful.
"where’s the real one," Logan said, voice hardening fast, grief curdling into something sharper and more useful. "where is he. tell me what we know."
---
Mika heard the news secondhand, gossip spreading fast through the academy halls, and for once found absolutely nothing amusing about any of it.
"wait," he said, grabbing the arm of the student delivering the news, all his usual smugness drained clean out of his face. "wait, say that again. it wasn’t really him? this whole time, there’s been some... some thing walking around, and the real Julian’s been missing, actually missing, this whole time?"
"that’s what they’re saying," the student said, already hurrying off to spread the news further.
Mika stood frozen in the hallway, something uncomfortable twisting in his stomach. He’d spent days hoping Julian was simply gone, out of Logan’s life for good, and the reality landing now... that something monstrous had been walking these halls in his place, that the real Julian might genuinely be in danger somewhere... hit different than he expected. Petty jealousy was one thing. This was something else entirely, and even Mika, self-absorbed as he was, felt the cold weight of it settle uncomfortably behind his ribs.
"gods," he muttered under his breath, and for the first time in weeks, didn’t have a single cruel thing to say.
---
The Emperor moved fast once the shock burned off, voice cutting through the war room with renewed, absolute authority.
"we start over," he said. "everything we assumed about the search, we throw out. that thing was created somewhere, controlled by someone with the ability to disguise it convincingly enough to fool all of us for over a week. that means whoever did this has resources, patience, and proximity. find where that creature actually originated. work backward from there."
"the mountain," Reid said suddenly, realization dawning fast and sharp. "the last confirmed location before he vanished. that has to be the starting point. we widen the search from there, properly this time, with everyone knowing exactly what we’re actually looking for."
"do it," the Emperor said. "every available Sentinel. every scout. I don’t care about border strain anymore. find him."
Jayden was already moving toward the door. "I’m leading the mountain team myself."
"so am I," Logan said, falling into step beside him, something new and fierce settling behind his eyes.
The Emperor watched them go, jaw tight, before turning back to Reid. "and if we find him," he said quietly, "and he’s not the same as when he left."
Reid didn’t have an answer for that. Neither of them did.
---
Back at the old couple’s home, Julian sat propped up against the headboard, strength slowly creeping back into his limbs, though nowhere near what he needed yet.
"we can’t stay here much longer," Julian said, voice steadier now than it had been, though still rough at the edges. "Xavier’s search radius is only going to keep expanding. every day we stay, we put them at more risk." He glanced toward the door, toward where the old couple were quietly preparing a meal in the next room, utterly unaware of how much danger they’d walked into simply by finding him. "I won’t let that happen. not to them."
"you’re still too weak to travel far," the fox said, tails curling with worry. "the displacement drained you badly. pushing your body again this soon could be dangerous."
"more dangerous than staying," Julian said flatly. "we need a plan. can you reach the academy somehow? send word, even if you can’t carry me there yet?"
The fox considered that, ears flicking thoughtfully. "I might be able to project a signal," it said slowly. "something small, something that wouldn’t attract Xavier’s attention the way a full displacement would. it wouldn’t get you there. but it might tell someone where to start looking."
"do it," Julian said immediately. "anything. I don’t care how small the chance is."
The fox nodded, already closing its eyes, gathering its remaining strength for the attempt, small golden light beginning to pulse steady at its chest.
Julian watched, holding his breath, hope flickering fragile but real for the first time since he’d woken up in that room.
’come on,’ he thought, willing it to work with everything he had left. ’somebody. anybody. please.’
