Chapter 74: The Prince Who Won’t Back Down (2)

Rong Shuyan looked at her and knew that she clearly wanted to stop him, but after several seconds, her grip slowly loosened.

"If you start feeling sick, you have to stop immediately," she said. "I don’t care what’s happening on the battlefield. If you start coughing blood or bleeding like General Zhou, you stop."

Rong Shuyan gave a small nod. "Very well."

"You promise?" Lin Xueyi looked at him with worried eyes.

Rong Shuyan nodded. "I promise."

The soldiers standing around them suddenly felt like they were the ones about to cough up blood.

They had already been separated from their wives and lovers for so long because of this war. Now, while they were worried about whether they would even survive long enough to return home, they had to stand there and watch the Prince and Princess Consort Rui act so sweet with each other right in front of them.

Wasn’t this simply cruel?

If they were going to die on this battlefield, then they wanted to die in their wives’ arms too!

Unfortunately, their wives were far away, while the only thing being shoved in front of their faces right now was someone else’s love.

Not long after, Rong Shuyan carefully adjusted the eagle in his hands. The bird remained surprisingly calm, its sharp claws resting against the thick cloth covering his arm.

Lin Xueyi stood beside him, watching every movement he made with clear worry in her eyes.

Rong Shuyan lowered his gaze toward the eagle. He pricked the tip of his finger, and a small drop of blood appeared. Using his blood, he carefully drew a circle between his eyebrows before drawing another one on the eagle’s body.

Once he was done, Rong Shuyan closed his eyes.

He slowly gathered his spiritual energy and allowed it to flow toward the eagle. Unlike General Zhou, Rong Shuyan had no intention of trying to control the bird’s body. He had already seen what could happen if someone pushed themselves too far.

He only needed one thing from the eagle: its vision.

For the first few seconds, all Rong Shuyan could see was darkness. Then the darkness disappeared from his sight, replaced by a strange view of himself from below.

Rong Shuyan could see his own face. He could see Lin Xueyi standing beside his wheelchair and the soldiers gathered around them.

"Your Highness?" Lin Xueyi called when she noticed the small change in his expression.

"I succeeded," Rong Shuyan replied quietly without opening his eyes.

He slowly lifted one hand. "Let it fly."

The soldier beside him carefully took the eagle from Rong Shuyan’s hands before walking a few steps forward. A few moments later, he raised his arm and released it into the sky.

The moment the eagle spread its wings, Rong Shuyan’s vision suddenly rose with it.

The ground quickly became smaller beneath him. The tents, soldiers, horses, and wooden fences of the military camp slowly turned into tiny shapes as the eagle climbed higher into the sky.

"Prepare the map," Rong Shuyan said.

The military surveyor immediately brought the map over and spread it across the table outside, ready to mark down anything Rong Shuyan told him.

The eagle continued flying higher, giving Rong Shuyan a much wider view of the land around them.

"The Second Prince’s troops are only about ten li from the hidden path," Rong Shuyan said after a moment.

The military surveyor immediately found their location on the map.

Rong Shuyan then shifted his attention farther away, following the route the support troops were taking. "The support group is fifty li away."

"They’ve just passed the Twin Stone Peaks," Rong Shuyan continued. "They’re moving along the eastern side of the river."

The military surveyor quickly found the landmark on the map. He placed his finger between two mountain marks before looking toward Rong Shuyan for his next instruction.

Rong Shuyan didn’t speak immediately. Through the eagle’s eyes, he carefully studied the land between the support troops and the hidden path.

The route they were currently taking was safe, but it was far too long. It curved around the mountains before following the river north, which meant the support troops would need several more hours to reach Rong Yunzhou’s soldiers.

By then, the battle might already be over.

Rong Shuyan forced the eagle’s vision farther across the surrounding land, searching for anything they could use.

A dull pain had already begun spreading behind his eyes, but he ignored it.

He knew he didn’t have much time.

His body was nowhere near as strong as General Zhou’s, and even though Rong Shuyan was only borrowing the eagle’s vision rather than controlling its body, maintaining the connection was still slowly draining his spiritual energy.

"Your Highness..." Lin Xueyi noticed that his face was becoming paler.

Rong Shuyan didn’t answer her because his mind was moving quickly as he compared everything he saw from above with the map he remembered.

The eastern road was too long.

The northern slope was too steep for a large group of soldiers.

The river was too deep to cross safely.

There had to be another way.

Rong Shuyan’s breathing slowly became heavier.

[Stop pushing yourself!]

Lin Xueyi wanted to interrupt him, but when she saw the deep frown on his face, she forced herself to remain quiet because she knew that every second mattered right now.

Then, just as Rong Shuyan began to feel that he could no longer maintain the connection, the eagle flew past the western side of the mountains.

Something caught his attention. "Wait."

The military surveyor immediately froze, meanwhile Rong Shuyan focused on the area.

Between the two mountain slopes was a narrow stretch of land almost completely hidden beneath the thick trees. From the ground, it would have been easy to mistake it for nothing more than part of the forest.

But from above, Rong Shuyan could clearly see where it led. His heart immediately started beating faster as he said, "There’s another path."

The military surveyor quickly looked down at the map. "Another path, Your Highness?"
