Chapter 73: The Prince Who Won’t Back Down (1)
"General Zhou!" Physician Xu shouted when General Zhou suddenly coughed up a mouthful of blood.
Just as Rong Shuyan had warned him earlier, General Zhou still wasn’t skilled enough to control the eagle.
In the end, his stubborn decision had cost them the one person who could watch the battle from afar.
"Y-Your Highness..." General Zhou struggled to speak as his consciousness slowly began to fade.
Blood started flowing from his seven orifices, and his body had become so weak that he could barely move anymore.
"I’m... so... sorry, Your—"
Before General Zhou could finish his words, his eyes closed and he completely lost consciousness.
Rong Shuyan stared at him without showing any emotion. No one could tell what he was thinking as he watched General Zhou lying there covered in blood.
After a moment, he finally turned toward the nearby soldiers. "Take him to the medical tent."
His gaze then moved toward Physician Xu. "Physician Xu, please take care of him."
Several soldiers immediately stepped forward and carefully carried General Zhou away.
The moment their general was taken away, uneasiness quickly spread among the remaining soldiers.
One of their generals had suddenly fallen unconscious, while the others were nowhere near the camp. Some had gone to face the Southern Wolf Tribe directly, while another was leading the support troops.
For a moment, the soldiers who remained behind didn’t know what they were supposed to do.
Seeing their growing panic, Lin Xueyi couldn’t help but feel nervous as well.
[This is exactly why we should’ve just run away, Yanyan!] Lin Xueyi screamed in her mind.
Even so, she knew panicking wouldn’t solve anything. She desperately tried to think of a way to fix the terrible situation they had suddenly found themselves in.
[Was there ever a scene like this in the book? If there was, I should remember something.]
Lin Xueyi searched through everything she could remember from the original novel, hoping to find even the smallest clue that could help them.
Unfortunately, nothing came to mind.
[Damn it! This is completely new! Rong Shuyan was never in this situation in the original story!]
At this point in the original story, Rong Shuyan had still been staying at his manor because of his poor health. He had never come to the border, which meant none of this was supposed to happen to him.
Before Lin Xueyi could think any further, Rong Shuyan’s calm voice suddenly cut through the panic around them. "Bring me another eagle."
One of the soldiers immediately went to follow his order.
Lin Xueyi quickly turned toward him. "Your Highness, is there another soldier who can use the eagle’s vision?"
"No." Rong Shuyan remained surprisingly calm. "I doubt anyone else could do it without spending a long time practicing first."
Lin Xueyi frowned and a bad feeling immediately rose inside her. "Don’t tell me you’re planning to—"
"I’ll do it myself," Rong Shuyan said before she could finish.
Lin Xueyi’s eyes widened. She immediately walked over and stood directly in front of his wheelchair, blocking his way as if she could somehow stop him by doing that.
"Your Highness, you can’t do that!" Lin Xueyi said firmly. "Your body won’t be able to handle it!"
"Princess Consort, this is the only way," Rong Shuyan replied calmly.
His voice was steady, almost as if he wasn’t the one about to put his own body at risk.
"I know my own limits," he continued. "I know how much my body can handle, and I won’t push myself to the point of dying."
Lin Xueyi didn’t move away. Instead, she continued standing in front of Rong Shuyan, staring down at him with clear worry in her eyes.
"But General Zhou thought he knew his limits too," she reminded him. "Look at what happened to him."
Rong Shuyan fell silent for a moment.
[Exactly!] Lin Xueyi immediately thought. [People always say they know their limits right before doing something that nearly kills them!]
[And Yanyan was burning with fever just last night!]
[How am I supposed to believe him when he says his body can handle this?!]
Rong Shuyan couldn’t deny that Lin Xueyi had a reason to worry. His fever had only gone down that morning, and his head was still aching. Using the eagle’s vision would place even more strain on him.
However, General Zhou’s failure had left them with no other choice.
Without the eagle’s vision, they had no way of knowing what was happening around the hidden path. Rong Yunzhou had taken a large number of soldiers with him, and the support troops were still several hours away.
Rong Shuyan didn’t care whether Rong Yunzhou’s reckless decision ended badly for him, but the soldiers who had followed him were another matter.
Most of them were simply following the orders of their general. Rong Shuyan couldn’t sit comfortably inside the camp while hundreds of soldiers walked into danger without anyone even knowing what was happening to them.
"I’m not General Zhou," Rong Shuyan finally said.
Lin Xueyi frowned. "That doesn’t make your body any healthier."
Rong Shuyan almost sighed. Sometimes, Lin Xueyi could be surprisingly difficult to argue with.
"I won’t control the eagle," he explained. "I’ll only share its vision. That will require far less spiritual energy than what General Zhou tried to do."
"But it will still use your spiritual energy."
"Yes."
Lin Xueyi sighed. "And your body is already weak."
"Yes."
The frown deepened on her forehead. "You had a fever last night."
"I remember."
Lin Xueyi stared at him in disbelief. [Then why are you saying yes to everything so calmly?!]
Before she could argue again, the soldier who had left earlier returned with another eagle perched on his arm. "Your Highness, the eagle is here."
Lin Xueyi immediately turned toward the bird. For one ridiculous moment, she wanted to grab the eagle and run away with it.
Rong Shuyan heard that thought and quickly reached out to catch her wrist.
Lin Xueyi blinked and looked down at him.
"Don’t," Rong Shuyan said.
Her eyes widened. [How did he know?!]
Rong Shuyan ignored the question in her thoughts and gently pulled her aside so the soldier could approach.
The eagle was placed on a wooden stand beside him. Rong Shuyan studied it for a moment before slowly raising his hand.
Lin Xueyi immediately grabbed his sleeve. "Your Highness."
