Chapter 39: Pastoral Illusions and the Reaper’s Hunger
Location: Sunderland Nation - The Iron Leviathan, En Route to Vanguard City
The rhythmic, metallic clack-clack-clack of the steam train gliding over the iron rails acted as a surprisingly effective lullaby.
Inside the opulent VIP carriage, bathed in the soft, golden light of the early morning sun, Ashford—Cain, still flawlessly maintaining his sapphire-gowned female form—was fast asleep. His head was leaning heavily against the plush velvet wall next to the window. The sheer mental exhaustion of maintaining his disguise, orchestrating Lord Sterling’s psychological destruction, and dealing with Sofia’s endless teasing had finally caught up to the Calamity-Class anomaly. His chest rose and fell in a slow, peaceful rhythm, a stark contrast to the absolute monster lurking beneath the porcelain skin.
Yet, even while Cain slept, his mind was not entirely dark. Deep within his consciousness, his artificial intelligence was relentlessly processing the latest influx of global data.
[System: Nova]
Status: Host in deep recovery sleep. Running background geopolitical analysis.
Intelligence Update: The confession of Lord Sterling has triggered a localized political collapse in Port Triton.
Observation: Zero High Cardinals from Triton are present aboard this train.
Conclusion: Sterling’s forced confession implicated them entirely. The military constabulary has arrested the corrupt Cardinals and Sterling’s accomplices. They are currently being transported via heavily guarded prisoner convoys to face the Royal High Court in Vanguard City.
Global Threat Assessment: Official human news outlets have declared the Demon Lord missing or destroyed within the Outland Dungeon. Consequently, the Demon Armies have entered a defensive retreat, consolidating their borders. The Vanguard Human Armies have capitalized on this, reclaiming heavily contested territories.
Current State: Global ceasefire. No active engagements on the Eastern or Western Continents. The demons are waiting for their leader. The humans are preparing for a final push.
Across the carriage, Sofia Vileblood rested her chin gracefully on her gloved hand, gazing out the large glass window.
The view outside was breathtaking, a stark departure from the smog-choked skies and industrial grit of Port Triton. They were passing through the agricultural heartland of the Sunderland Nation. Rolling hills of vibrant, emerald-green grass stretched endlessly toward the horizon, glowing with morning dew. Massive plantation fields were perfectly partitioned by low stone walls and wooden fences.
"It truly is a beautiful country," Sofia murmured softly, not wanting to wake her terrifying attendant.
She watched as the train passed by idyllic rural sights: herds of wooly sheep and spotted cows grazing lazily in the pastures, completely unbothered by the roaring steam engine. Flocks of chickens and fat pigs crowded around large, iconic red-and-white farmer barns that dotted the landscape. These agrarian structures were a fascinating blend of old-world charm and early industrial efficiency, featuring massive wooden silos and small, steam-powered irrigation pumps.
"It is the breadbasket of the continent, My Lady," Sebastian replied quietly, seated at the adjacent table. He was meticulously studying a large, parchment roadmap, plotting their exact route to the mysterious Easternmost region. "Sunderland’s military might is fueled entirely by the surplus generated from these rural territories."
Sofia took a delicate sip of her tea. "And our next stop is the Capital. Vanguard City."
"Yes. The Vileblood Family Estate in the Capital remains intact, though likely dusty," Sebastian confirmed, adjusting his glasses. "We shall rest there and gather supplies. However, given your sudden return from the 'dead,' we must be prepared. It is currently impossible to guess if the King will summon you to the Royal Court. No official mandate has been issued yet, but your reappearance is the talk of the aristocracy."
Sofia smiled a wicked, knowing smile, glancing at the sleeping Cain. "Let the humans celebrate their supposed victories on the front lines. They believe they are winning the war, utterly oblivious to the fact that the Demon Lord is currently sipping tea on their finest train. We shall play the part of the loyal nobles in the Capital... for now."
Location: Sunderland Nation - Rural Route 7, Approaching Hexvalley Village
Far from the luxurious velvet seats of the steam train, a much simpler mode of transportation was bumping along a dusty, sun-baked dirt road.
A sturdy wooden horse carriage, laden with sacks of grain, bolts of cheap fabric, and traveling supplies, creaked and groaned with every pothole. At the reins sat Elias, a middle-aged traveling merchant with a sun-beaten face and a friendly, gap-toothed smile.
Sitting in the back of the open cart, dangling their legs over the edge, were two very unusual hitchhikers.
Crimson Scarlet and Duchess Zephyra had successfully infiltrated human territory. They were currently dressed in standard, slightly worn adventurer's gear. Scarlet wore a fitted leather tunic, simple trousers, and a hooded cloak, looking every bit the part of a hyperactive teenage scout. Her massive, cursed scythe was magically sealed away into a small, innocent-looking silver ring on her finger.
Zephyra, on the other hand, wore a long, flowing dark-blue robe. To hide her distinctly demonic, serpentine eyes and shadow-touched features, she wore an oversized, wide-brimmed pointed mage's hat pulled low over her face. To any passing human, she was simply a traveling spellcaster.
They had encountered Elias an hour prior when his carriage wheel had become stuck in a deep mud trench. Scarlet, in her passive, childlike state, had eagerly rushed forward and effortlessly lifted the entire carriage with one hand so Elias could fix the wheel. Astonished and grateful, the merchant had offered the two "adventurers" a ride to the nearest settlement.
"Mister Elias! Mister Elias!" Scarlet chirped, leaning forward and practically bouncing on the wooden planks. "I have a question!"
"Ask away, little miss," Elias chuckled, snapping the reins gently to keep the draft horses moving.
"If those giant, super-cool steam trains are so fast, why doesn't this village have a train station? Wouldn't it make selling your grain way easier?" Scarlet asked, her eyes wide with genuine, innocent curiosity.
Elias laughed, a warm, hearty sound. "Ah, you're a sharp one. And you'd be right! But you see, the steam trains and the iron tracks are terribly expensive. Right now, the train stations are only built in the big cities—like Port Triton or Vanguard—or near the major Military Bases. The high society and the army get the fast transport."
He gestured to the sprawling, golden wheat fields around them. "Out here in the rural regions, we still depend on horse carriages and dirt roads for both short and long distances. The steam age hasn't quite reached our front doors yet."
"That's not fair at all!" Scarlet pouted, crossing her arms.
"Well, there's hope on the horizon," Elias smiled. "Rumors from the Capital say the Government is officially planning a massive expansion. They want to build railways connecting all the rural agricultural hubs to improve long-distance travel and trade. Give it ten years, and this old dirt road might be covered in iron tracks."
THWACK.
"Ow!" Scarlet yelped, her hands immediately flying up to cover the top of her head.
Zephyra had just delivered a lightning-fast, perfectly executed knife-hand strike directly to the crown of Scarlet's head.
"Do not ask so many incessant questions, Scarlet," Zephyra scolded smoothly, her voice a sultry, dangerous purr from beneath the brim of her mage hat. "You will fluster the poor man with your endless babbling."
Scarlet glared at Zephyra, her cheeks puffed out pettishly. "That hurt, Zephyra!" she whined, rubbing her head.
Elias chuckled again, glancing back at the two women. "No problem at all, Miss Mage! You two helped me out of a real bind back there. The least I can do is answer a few questions to pass the time."
A few minutes later, the carriage crested a hill, revealing their destination. The village of Hexvalley was a quintessential, rustic Sunderland settlement. It was charmingly small, consisting of about fifty buildings with heavily thatched roofs and whitewashed walls. A large windmill spun lazily in the breeze on the edge of town, and the rhythmic clanging of a blacksmith’s hammer echoed through the valley. The air smelled of woodsmoke, fresh bread, and livestock.
Elias pulled the carriage to a halt near the village square, right in front of a bustling local tavern.
Scarlet and Zephyra hopped down from the cart, their boots hitting the dirt.
"Thank you so much for the ride, Elias!" Scarlet beamed, waving enthusiastically.
"The pleasure was mine," Elias smiled, tipping his hat to them. "You girls stay safe on the road. I hope we meet again!" With a click of his tongue, he guided his horses down the lane toward the grain silos.
The moment the merchant’s carriage turned the corner and disappeared from sight, the vibrant, childlike innocence vanished from Scarlet’s face entirely.
The air around her seemed to drop in temperature. Her fringe shadowed her face, and when she looked up, her eyes were no longer the soft hue of a human teenager. They were glowing, piercing, blood-moon crimson.
She took a deep breath through her nose, inhaling the scents of the bustling village. Beneath the smell of bread and woodsmoke, her demonic senses picked up something else. The scent of a butcher preparing meat. The scent of a hundred mortal hearts beating, pumping hot, fragile blood through their veins.
"Zephyra..." Scarlet whispered, her voice dropping an octave, taking on the hollow, terrifying resonance of the Abyssal Reaper. "There are so many blood scents here. It is everywhere. I feel... incredibly hungry."
A shadow moved beside her. Zephyra stepped close, her hand resting firmly on Scarlet’s shoulder.
"Nope," Zephyra said plainly, instantly shutting down the Reaper's bloodlust. "Reel it in, Scarlet. Need I remind you of our mission? We are here to find Her Majesty, not to start a buffet."
Scarlet let out a frustrated groan, the crimson glow fading from her eyes as she reluctantly suppressed her demonic instincts.
"Remember the absolute rule," Zephyra warned, her serpentine eyes flashing dangerously beneath her hat. "We are in the heart of human territory. You cannot slay a single human. If you draw the Vanguard Paladins to us before we find the Demon Lord, I will personally bury you in this dirt."
"Fine, fine," Scarlet huffed, kicking a pebble across the dirt road. "But when we find Sofia, I’m asking her for a snack."
