Chapter 38: The Council of Shadows and the Iron Leviathan
Location: Border of Frontierra and Sunderland - Demon Territory Main Fortress
High above the jagged peaks of the borderlands, hidden within the impenetrable storm clouds, sat the Main Fortress of the Demon Lord’s army. Inside its deepest sanctum, a massive circular table carved from obsidian dominated the center of the war room. The chamber was unlit save for the cold, piercing shafts of moonlight that filtered through the high, arched windows, illuminating the faces of the most terrifying entities on the continent.
These were the Six Demon Generals, the undisputed apex predators of the Demon Lord’s forces.
The silence in the room was suffocating, thick with latent bloodlust and barely contained rivalries. Suddenly, the quiet was violently shattered.
SLAM!
Lord Malakor—The Iron Wall—brought his massive, gauntleted fist down onto the obsidian table. The impact sent a spiderweb of cracks through the magical stone. Malakor was a towering, muscular demon clad entirely in spiked, blood-red plate armor. He represented the ancient, proud warrior traditions of the demonic realm, a being of raw, overwhelming martial power.
"I ask again," Malakor bellowed, his voice sounding like two grinding millstones. He pointed a massive armored finger across the table. "Why is this human sitting at our Council? He does not share our blood. He does not share our nature. He is a fragile, fleeting mortal!"
Sitting opposite the raging behemoth was General Vane. Clad in a crisp, immaculate military uniform, Vane did not even blink at the outburst. He was a human, yet his eyes held a cold, calculated darkness that rivaled any demon in the room.
"Have you already forgotten, Lord Malakor?" Vane replied, his voice dangerously soft and perfectly even. "It was my human intellect and my military strategy that allowed your demon armies to conquer the western human empires in a matter of months. While you were throwing your soldiers blindly against their fortified walls, I starved them out and broke their supply lines. You sit in this fortress because I drew the map that led you here."
Malakor’s eyes burned like forge-fires behind his visor. "Do not test me, mortal. I could crush your skull before you could draw a breath."
"You could try," Vane stated, leaning back in his chair, unflinching.
The atmosphere in the room grew exponentially denser, the sheer pressure of their opposing killing intents threatening to crush the very air.
"Um... g-guys? Can we please not fight?"
A high-pitched, entirely out-of-place voice broke the tension. Crimson Scarlet, the highest-ranking Abyssal Reaper, stood up to intervene. Clad in a gothic, ruffled dress, she looked like a delicate human teenager, a stark contrast to her terrifying title.
"We are supposed to be a team!" Scarlet pleaded, gesturing wildly. As she did, the massive, three-meter-long cursed scythe strapped to her back swung around.
CRASH!
The heavy blade of the scythe caught the edge of the table, violently sweeping away three crystal wine glasses. They shattered loudly against the stone floor, splashing dark red wine across Malakor’s polished boots.
Scarlet froze. The intimidating aura of the Abyssal Reaper vanished instantly, replaced by sheer panic. Her eyes literally squeezed into a comical " > < " shape.
"Oh! I'm sorry! I didn't do it on purpose!" Scarlet squeaked, waving her hands frantically in front of her face as Malakor and Vane turned their terrifying, unified glares upon her. "Please don't declare war on me! I'll clean it up!"
Watching the highest-tier Reaper instantly regress into a clumsy, terrified child outside of battle, Duchess Zephyra let out a dark, melodic chuckle. Zephyra—The Shadow Weaver—was a breathtaking serpentine-succubus hybrid. Her lower half trailed off into shifting shadows, and her eyes held a mesmerizing, toxic allure.
"Oh my... Scarlet," Zephyra teased, resting her chin on her pale hand, thoroughly enjoying the chaos. "We are supposed to be discussing global war, not breaking cups like a clumsy maid. Though, I suppose it is highly amusing to watch you grovel." Zephyra's eyes then flicked to Vane, silently analyzing the human's micro-expressions, eternally calculating the exact moment he might betray them.
CRACK. CRACK.
Two sharp, deafening taps echoed through the chamber.
Everyone fell instantly silent.
At the head of the table sat Xaroth—The Necromancer Lich. He was a floating, skeletal nightmare draped in tattered, void-purple robes. Dark, necrotic energy continuously leaked from his hollow eye sockets.
"Enough." Xaroth spoke, his voice a horrifying, dual-toned echo that seemed to bypass their ears and speak directly into their minds. "You waste time with petty squabbles and mortal emotions. We have a singular, catastrophic crisis."
Sylas, a female Lich clad in elegant, frost-covered robes, nodded slowly in agreement, her glowing blue eyes narrowing. "Xaroth is correct. The magical tethers... they are gone."
"Her aura. Her existence. The very anchor of our power," Xaroth continued, his bony fingers gripping the edge of the table. "The Demon Lord has vanished. The magical resonance linking her to the Outland Dungeon has been completely severed."
The Council fell into a grim silence. Without Demon Lord Sofia, their magical reserves would eventually stagnate. Worse, the human armies were beginning to rally, sensing the sudden halt in the demons' expansion.
"We cannot direct the war effort properly without Her Majesty’s absolute authority," Malakor grunted, crossing his massive arms. "The hordes will fracture."
"We have intelligence," Vane interjected smoothly, pulling a sealed parchment from his coat. "My spy network across the human nations has intercepted a highly classified report from Port Triton. The Lady Seraphina—the Vileblood noble ship that went missing in the Outland storms three years ago—has miraculously returned to Sunderland."
Zephyra’s eyes widened slightly. "From the Outland? No human ship survives those waters. Unless..."
"Unless Her Majesty hijacked it to escape the dungeon," Sylas concluded, her magical aura flaring with realization.
"We must deploy Observers into human territory immediately," Xaroth declared, his dual-toned voice vibrating the glass windows. "We must locate the Demon Lord and ascertain her status."
"I'll go!" Crimson Scarlet yelled, suddenly slamming her hands on the table, her clumsiness replaced by absolute, burning determination. Among all the Generals, Scarlet was the most emotionally attached to Sofia. The thought of her beloved Demon Lord wandering alone in hostile human territory terrified her. "I volunteer!"
Zephyra sighed gracefully. "As much as it pains me to agree with the child... Scarlet is the logical choice. In her passive state, she appears entirely human. No paladin would ever suspect her of being an Abyssal Reaper."
"And you shall accompany her, Zephyra," Xaroth commanded. "You possess no overt demonic appendages when disguised, and your mastery of illusion and espionage is necessary to keep Scarlet from accidentally destroying a city block."
"Understood," Zephyra smiled wickedly.
"We leave immediately!" Scarlet cheered, throwing her fist into the air, her giant scythe nearly knocking over Malakor's chair in the process.
Location: Sunderland Nation - Port Triton City, The Grand Railway Terminal
Miles away, the object of the Demon Generals' frantic search was currently standing on a crowded train platform, looking profoundly annoyed.
Sofia Vileblood, dressed in a sleek, charcoal traveling coat, watched with deep amusement as her terrifying, Calamity-Class Vanguard commander completely lost his composure.
Cain was still trapped in his flawless female 'Ashford' form to maintain their cover. He wore a pristine, dark-green tailored noblewoman's dress, a wide-brimmed hat, and delicate gloves. However, his golden-ringed eyes were wide with pure, boyish excitement as he stared down the tracks.
Stepping into the grand terminal felt like walking into the ribcage of an iron leviathan. Overhead, massive medieval stone arches supported a towering roof of dark iron and stained glass, through which the dim morning light filtered. The air was thick, tasting of heavy grease, hot coal, and the sharp hiss of pressurized steam.
Resting on the iron tracks was a colossal black locomotive—a roaring beast of polished steel and exposed brass rivets, its furnace glowing like a trapped demon’s eye. With a deafening, mechanical screech, the train released a massive cloud of pearlescent steam that swallowed the platform whole. Through the white mist, the gas lamps lining the stone pillars flickered eerily, throwing long, dancing shadows of passengers clad in coats and cloaks.
As the conductor’s pocket watch ticked steadily against the ambient rumble, the station felt suspended in time, balanced on the fine line between ancient myth and the unstoppable march of the steam age.
"It's exactly like the schematics in the Floor 100 Library," Cain whispered, stepping closer to the massive iron wheels, completely ignoring the soot ruining the hem of his dress. "The pressure valves, the external combustion chambers... the sheer mechanical engineering required to move this much weight without relying on mana is staggering."
"My, my, Ashford," Sofia teased, stepping up beside him and leaning in close. "I never knew you had such a passion for dirty, noisy machinery. You look like a little boy on his birthday, despite wearing that gorgeous gown."
Cain instantly stiffened, his cheeks flushing slightly as he rapidly adjusted his posture back into that of a demure lady. He shot Sofia a lethal glare. "I am merely analyzing their technological capabilities for tactical purposes."
"Of course you are," Sofia laughed softly.
Sebastian appeared from the throng of commoners, holding three gold-leafed tickets. "The luggage has been secured, My Lady. Our carriage is ready."
The steam train was strictly divided. The rear cars were cramped wooden boxes for the common folk, while the front cars, positioned right behind the engine, were reserved exclusively for the VIPs—Nobles, high-ranking military officers, and Church Cardinals.
Sebastian guided them past the velvet ropes, handing the golden tickets to an awestruck conductor who bowed deeply at the sight of the Vileblood crest.
They stepped onto the VIP carriage. The interior was a masterpiece of luxury that rivaled the Triton mansion. Plump, red velvet booths lined the walls, separated by polished mahogany partitions. Brass gas-lamps provided warm light, and heavy drapes blocked out the prying eyes of the station.
Cain slid into the velvet booth next to the window, finally letting out a long, exhausted sigh. "Next stop, Vanguard City. And then, the easternmost border."
"Indeed," Sofia smiled, taking the seat opposite him. "Though I doubt our journey to the Church's holy sanctuary will be a peaceful one. The High Cardinals in this very train will likely be traveling to the Capital as well."
Before Cain could respond, a deafening blast from the locomotive’s steam whistle rattled the glass windows. The floor beneath them shuddered as the massive iron pistons engaged. Slowly, the iron leviathan began to move, pulling them away from the coastal city and hurtling them directly into the heart of the human empire.
