Chapter 315: An Underhanded Attack
It wasn't just a few young people with a deep-seated grudge against Wang Chenning who couldn't stand him and wanted to teach him a lesson. Some old-timers had also taken notice, voicing their complaints about his meteoric rise.
"This man is too good at stirring up trouble. It's bad for unity and for improving our relations with South Korea and Japan. He needs a reminder," one of the old-timers remarked. "Isn't he close with the Zhao family? Then let him go compete with their scions!"
Another old-timer said, "The kid's a complete womanizer, surrounded by beautiful women. Since he loves them so much, let's make a woman his downfall!"
And so, rumors quickly began to circulate online, saying that Wang Chenning was trying to leverage the Zhao family's influence for his own ulterior motives.
Moreover, his relationships with Zhao Xiao'an, Yang Xiaofei, and Luo Yuqing were anything but ordinary—rife with ambiguity. Most of the disciples he recruited were young women, and everyone could guess what his "true intentions" were.
By the time these posts appeared, Wang Chenning had already finished a late-night snack with Zhao Xiao'an and they had gone back to rest together.
The news that Wang Chenning planned to donate the national treasure—the acupuncture bronze man—without any compensation had immediately drawn widespread attention and unanimous praise from netizens. Zhao Xiao'an was very satisfied with her handiwork.
After forcing Wang Chenning to go back with her, she had once again indulged herself wantonly.
After resting for a while and eating a late-night snack, Zhao Xiao'an was feeling full of vigor, but she soon learned a lesson from Wang Chenning's "prowess."
In the end, her defeat was a foregone conclusion.
Fortunately, she had been prepared and had specifically scheduled the next day off to rest.
Zhao Xiao'an had originally planned to have Wang Chenning go for a walk and do some shopping with her, or perhaps accompany him sightseeing.
It was already early spring, when the gentle breeze no longer carried a chill. It would have felt wonderful to go for a walk outside.
However, she couldn't get out of bed, and Wang Chenning also had matters to attend to.
"I'm sleeping until this afternoon. You go handle your business first. If there's time later, I'll go out with you!" Zhao Xiao'an said listlessly as Wang Chenning got out of bed. "When you get back, you're not allowed to bully me again! I'm scared of you!"
"Then get some good rest. After you're fully rested, you'll find your energy is even better, you'll be even more beautiful, and your figure will be even more amazing." Wang Chenning teased her with a grin for a moment before leaving gracefully amidst her soft pleas for mercy.
After arriving in Yandu yesterday, Wang Chenning hadn't stuck with the main delegation. Instead, he had been "abducted" by Zhao Xiao'an, so some handover matters could only be taken care of today.
Wang Chenning first went to the university to explain the situation to Lu Yuanshan. Then, he called the leaders of the exchange delegation one by one to do the same.
Zheng Chusheng and the other members of the delegation all knew that Wang Chenning had been whisked away by Zhao Xiao'an, leaving the airport in Zhao Jiefang's private car. None of them dared to voice any objections.
They felt honored that Wang Chenning took the initiative to call and explain the situation to them.
Both Zheng Chusheng and the others told Wang Chenning not to worry about these things. He should handle his other business first, they said; the delegation's affairs could be left to someone else.
However, Wang Chenning still took on his duties. He had Wu Jingyi immediately draft the itinerary report for the trip to the two East Asian nations.
He would also be attending the delegation's summary and awards ceremony the next morning.
While giving Wu Jingyi her instructions, she quietly asked him, "Master, have you checked Weibo?"
"I posted something last night and saw I got a lot of new followers, but I haven't looked since," Wang Chenning said, pulling out his phone. He opened Weibo and asked, "What's wrong?"
Wu Jingyi whispered, "There are a lot of posts slandering you, and what's strange is that they haven't been censored!"
"I can't believe this is happening!" Wang Chenning's brows furrowed.
He opened Weibo and, sure enough, saw many posts about himself.
His post about donating the acupuncture bronze man to the nation for free was still number one on the trending chart. Zhao Xiao'an's post was number two.
But many of the entries that followed were posts exposing his "dark side."
One post accused him of playing the field, claiming he wasn't just fooling around with women like "Ms. Zhao" and "Ms. Yang," but had also recruited a host of beautiful female disciples with the intent of coercing them into sleeping with him.
Another post claimed that during his visits to Seoul and Tokyo, he had secretly colluded with people from South Korea and Japan. The accusation was that he planned to sell out Huaxia's traditional culture to curry favor with them. The "most direct evidence" cited was his visits to the homes of Li Fuzhen and Tian Zhongxin, and his intention to accept the grandsons of Pu Zhengyang and Tian Zhongxin as disciples.
Yet another post accused him of plunder, claiming he used the Zhao family's name to forcibly seize several other people's assets as soon as he arrived in Yanjing, with the total sum amounting to billions.
Once these negative posts were published, they quickly set the internet ablaze. A few hours later, almost the entire web was embroiled in arguments about their content.
Wang Chenning had a lot of fans and admirers, and they all desperately defended him.
But plenty of people weren't fond of him, to say nothing of the paid trolls someone had clearly hired.
As a result, the online debate devolved into chaos.
After reading the posts, Wang Chenning's brow furrowed deeply.
He ignored Wu Jingyi and immediately called Zhao Xiao'an to explain the situation.
Zhao Xiao'an was still asleep with her phone on silent, but Wang Chenning's number was on the whitelist.
The moment she heard what Wang Chenning said, Zhao Xiao'an flew into a rage and immediately replied that she would handle it.
Afterward, Wang Chenning called Luo Yuqing and Yang Xiaofei.
Luo Yuqing and Yang Xiaofei had already noticed the situation, but they were mad at Wang Chenning. They had decided not to talk to him unless he reached out first.
When Wang Chenning called them about the matter, they were still rather curt with him.
Wang Chenning couldn't be bothered with their attitude. After explaining things clearly, he simply hung up.
Next, Wang Chenning contacted Zhang Mingchao and invited him to lunch.
"Brother Ning, my treat!" Zhang Mingchao agreed with a hearty laugh. "Our great hero has returned triumphant. We absolutely have to celebrate."
After arranging a place to meet Zhang Mingchao, Wang Chenning posted on Weibo again.
"Isn't everyone reflecting on why people are afraid to help the elderly cross the street? When people who do good deeds are met with undeserved suspicion and misunderstanding, it chills everyone's hearts. The same logic can be applied to many things! To those of you stirring up trouble—I don't know who put you up to this or what your objective is—and to those of you just blindly jumping on the bandwagon, I just want to remind you: aren't you afraid that one day, there will be no one left to stand up and fight for our country?"
After posting the message, Wang Chenning instructed Wu Jingyi to spend a little time and energy keeping an eye on the online chatter.
She was to alert him if any new storms started brewing.
Then, he summoned Wang Liqing and Wang Liyu.
He wanted to test the abilities of these two women by having them find the people who were stirring up all the trouble.
