Shadows of a second life

Chapter 7: The Edge of Rare

Four years,it has been 4 years since Liora Sylvaine began her tutelage. Elias Voss was now seven years old — still small for his age, but with a sharpness in his dark eyes that belonged to someone far older. The relentless training had transformed him. His mana reserves were vast for a child, his control over advanced magic precise and rapid. Yet as the day of his final test arrived, a familiar unease gnawed at him.

"Damn today's the day, can I really do it,Am I truly strong enough?"

"Liora had told me that today I will attempt to master a Rare-class spell — something most veteran mages never achieved in their lifetimes, can I really do this,I gotta be on my A game no slacking."

As he thought to himself liora called him over,"Hey little genius come over here."

“Today,We’re going beyond the village,” she told him , her silver hair braided for travel. “Some spells are too dangerous to test near people. You’ve earned this, Elias.”

They rode in a sturdy two-wheeled wooden carriage pulled by a pair of docile green-scaled lizards — common draft beasts in this region, reminiscent of ox-drawn carts from Earth’s history. The vehicle rumbled along dirt roads that eventually gave way to overgrown forest paths. The deeper they traveled into the Woods and beyond, into the forbidden stretches where monsters roamed freely, the more the landscape reminded Elias of ancient Asian forests he had only seen in pictures during his previous life: towering trees draped in moss,"it feels so... nostalgic"thick ferns carpeting the ground, shafts of sunlight piercing the canopy like spotlights. He continued his monologue" The air is impossibly clean — crisp, alive with the scent of pine, earth, and wild blooms. No pollution. No distant city smog, this beautiful world, earth was a wasteland compared to this,no earth was beautiful,I wonder what earth would be like without humans.I really can't say but we destroyed the world we were meant to protect,I never want to go back there."

As the carriage jolted along, Elias’s mind wandered. "I wonder what happened after I died back there." The thought came unbidden. Did my parents mourn? Or were they just relieved to have one less burden? And Aiko… did she laugh about it with her new friends? Call me pathetic even in death?" I really never want to go back there,I don't want it no never. I really don't want it,I prefer to stay here with people who really matter people who make me feel loved and whole. I wonder if I can ever live up to their expectations,I have to get better, much better than the way I am"

He glanced at Liora, then thought of his new family — Elaric’s proud grins, Lira’s gentle care, Maria’s steady presence, even Elara and Selene’s teasing. A quiet resolve settled over him.

It doesn’t matter. They treated me like garbage. This family actually sees value in me. I won’t screw this up. I have to be worthy of it.

The carriage finally stopped at the edge of a wide clearing deep in the forbidden woods. Liora paid the driver with a handful of silver coins. The man nodded respectfully and quickly turned his lizards around, disappearing back down the path as if eager to leave this dangerous place behind.

Morning light filtered through the canopy as they walked further into the clearing. Liora stopped at its center, her azure robes swaying gently.

“This is far enough,” she said softly. “Today, I will show you my ultimate spell. A Rare-grade spell I have spent over sixty years refining.”

Elias’s eyes widened. “Sixty years?”, just how old does that make you, you must be at least seventy or more, you're kidding right.

Liora shot back:"show some respect, you didn't expect that but you should respond with awe rather than... You know what never mind just remember I'm still young for an elf." Time flows differently for us. This spell is entirely my own creation — a perfect fusion of wind and water magic. No one else in this world knows it. I am passing it down to you.”

"You should be honoured".

Elias felt a surge of gratitude and pressure at the same time. “Thank you, Lady Liora. I… I won’t waste this.”

She smiled faintly, then sighed and took a deep, centering breath. Her staff — a slender length of silverwood topped with a glowing crystal — rose in her hands. She planted her feet firmly, violet eyes narrowing in deep concentration.

The air around them shifted.

A light breeze stirred the leaves at first, gentle and almost playful. But it quickly grew stronger, swirling around Liora in visible currents. Mana thickened in the atmosphere, heavy and electric. Elias could feel the sheer power building — this was no ordinary spell. This was the threshold where a mage stopped being merely human and became something far more terrifying.

Liora’s silver hair whipped wildly as the wind intensified. The ground trembled faintly. Clouds began to gather unnaturally fast overhead despite the clear morning sky.

The beginning of something truly catastrophic was unfolding before his eyes..
