Chapter 54: Localized Plasma-Fire Magic
And for the first time in seven years, the brilliant physicist who always had the answers was completely unresponsive, bleeding out in Lyla’s arms.
"His core temperature is exceeding one hundred and eight degrees Fahrenheit," Elara panicked, her Statistical Probability Mapping returning catastrophic biological metrics as she pressed a trembling, pristine white glove to Ren’s forehead. "His cellular proteins are actively denaturing. If his brain temperature does not drop in the next ninety seconds, the neurological damage will be permanent and fatal."
"I'll run him to the hot springs!" Kira cried, her silver ears pinned flat against her head in sheer terror. "The water will cool him down!"
"The ambient temperature of the springs is forty degrees Celsius, Kira! It will accelerate the hyperthermia!" Elara snapped, her usually flawless Head Maid composure cracking into raw desperation. "We need rapid, endothermic heat extraction! We need evaporative cooling!"
Elara didn't wait for a response. She slammed her hands onto the scorched, glass-like earth of the courtyard. She reached deep into the bedrock, violently pulling pure, freezing groundwater up through the molten slag.
"Lyla, hold him flat!" Elara ordered.
She directed the freezing water over Ren’s burning skin in a fine, continuous mist. The moment the water droplets touched his superheated flesh, they flash-boiled into steam.
The latent heat of vaporization, Elara calculated frantically, tears finally spilling from her golden eyes. When water transitions from a liquid to a gas, it absorbs an immense amount of thermal energy from its surroundings. Bleed the heat. Please, just bleed the heat.
For thirty agonizing seconds, the courtyard was filled with the hiss of steam as Elara relentlessly stripped the lethal thermal energy from Ren’s overloaded biological circuits.
Slowly, the angry, glowing red spiderwebs of burst capillaries on Ren's neck began to fade. The blistering heat radiating from his chest subsided.
With a sudden, violent gasp, Ren’s back arched. His dark eyes snapped open, pupils blown wide as he sucked in a desperate, ragged breath of air.
"Master Ren!" Lyla sobbed, pulling him gently against her massive chest.
"The... the fog..." Ren coughed, blood spattering his white coat. He weakly pushed against Lyla’s arm, his eyes instantly locking onto the towering, luminous violet cloud of mutagenic spores rolling across the courtyard.
"We are protected, Master Ren," Elara said, her voice shaking with relief as she knelt beside him. "The mRNA inhibitor is working. But the spores are expanding toward the village vents."
Ren struggled to sit up, his fourteen-year-old body trembling violently under the horrific strain of the systemic damage. He looked past the expanding fog, his physicist mind locking onto the colossal, headless corpse of the Tier-5 Abomination.
The beast was dead, but its biology was refusing to accept the mathematics of its demise. Without the Hive-Mind’s telepathic crystal to regulate its massive cellular structure, the corpse had entered a state of catastrophic, autonomous decay. It was actively sublimating, acting as a massive biological geyser, continuously pumping millions of cubic feet of hyper-concentrated spores into the atmosphere.
"It's a biological failsafe," Ren wheezed, wiping the blood from his chin. "If the Avatar falls, it ensures the complete assimilation of the surrounding ecosystem. We cannot let that fog breach the valley."
"I can try to blow it away with a vacuum wake!" Kira offered, her hands twitching toward her daggers.
"No," Ren commanded weakly. "A kinetic wake will simply scatter the spores into the upper atmosphere, riding the jet stream directly to the Capital. We cannot disperse it. We must annihilate it."
If you come across this story on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from NovelPhoenix. Please report it.
Ren gritted his teeth, forcing his screaming muscles to obey him. He staggered to his feet, leaning heavily against Lyla’s leg for support.
"Carry me to the roof," Ren whispered. "To the railgun."
Lyla didn't question him. She scooped the exhausted boy into her arms as gently as she would a newborn bird, and with a single, massive flex of her Absolute Mass Output, she leaped fifty feet straight up into the air, landing softly on the slate tiles of the manor roof. Elara and Kira arrived a microsecond later.
Ren stood before the smoking, twelve-foot barrel of the Electromagnetic Railgun. The heavy copper coils were still radiating intense heat from obliterating the Tortoise-beasts.
"Master Ren, we are out of solid ammunition," Elara warned, scanning the empty magazines.
"We do not need a solid projectile, Elara," Ren said, gripping the heavy brass handles of the weapon to keep himself upright. "We are going to fire the atmosphere itself."
Ren looked down at the courtyard. The purple fog had already reached the manor walls, creeping upward like a rising, toxic tide.
"The spores are organic," Ren lectured, his voice regaining a fraction of its cold, academic authority despite the blood staining his teeth. "To destroy them completely, we must initiate a thermal reaction so intense that no biological matter can survive. We need to ignite the sky."
"But the air isn't flammable, Master Ren," Kira said, tilting her head.
"It is if you change its state of matter," Ren smiled, a dangerous, defiant glint returning to his eyes. "The atmosphere is seventy-eight percent nitrogen. It is incredibly stable. But if we introduce an electrical current massive enough to rip the electrons completely away from their atomic nuclei, the gas becomes a conductive, super-heated soup of ions and free electrons."
Ren tapped the heavy copper coils of the railgun.
"The chemical equation for ionization is [ N_2+e^-→N_2^++2e^- ]," Ren recited. "We are going to create a localized, self-sustaining plasma chain reaction. We are going to turn the air above the courtyard into a miniature sun."
Ren looked at the thirteen-year-old fox-kin. "Kira. I need the rest of your battery."
Kira stepped up to the railgun, grabbing the heavy conductive cables. Her silver fur was matted with sweat and dirt, and she was already exhausted from the orbital strikes, but she didn't hesitate. "I've got enough left for one big spark, Master Ren."
"That is all we need," Ren said. He turned to Elara. "Elara, if we ignite the plasma in an open environment, the thermal updraft will carry the unburned spores higher into the sky before they can be incinerated. I need a lid on the pot. Build a dome."
Elara stepped to the edge of the roof. She closed her eyes, her hands glowing with pure, unadulterated earth mana. She reached out not to the courtyard, but to the towering cliffs of the western gorge.
With a deafening rumble that shook the Barony to its foundations, the cliffs bowed to her mathematical will. Millions of tons of bedrock arced through the sky, converging high above the manor to form a colossal, perfectly symmetrical dome of solid stone, trapping the entire courtyard—and the expanding purple fog—beneath an impenetrable rock ceiling.
"Containment dome established," Elara panted, dropping to one knee. "The spores are trapped."
Ren gripped the brass handles of the railgun. He closed his eyes, bypassing his own fried biological limiters one final time. He pushed his remaining Omni-Elemental mana into the empty chamber of the railgun, forcefully compressing the ambient air inside the barrel until the pressure reached critical mass.
"Kira! Now!" Ren roared.
Kira screamed, unleashing every single remaining volt of electricity from her superconducting nervous system into the weapon.
The massive surge of electricity hit the hyper-compressed air inside the barrel. The electrons were violently ripped from their nuclei. The air inside the railgun instantly transformed into a blinding, searing-white mass of pure plasma.
Ren pulled the trigger.
The Lorentz force engaged, grabbing the plasma and accelerating it down the rails at Mach 5.
A blinding, continuous beam of localized, white-hot plasma erupted from the roof of the manor. It didn't strike the ground; Ren aimed it directly into the center of the dense, trapped purple fog hovering over the courtyard.
The moment the plasma beam touched the aerosolized biological spores, the thermal chain reaction was absolute.
The entire atmosphere beneath Elara's stone dome ignited.
A localized sun bloomed over the Valerius estate. The temperature instantly spiked to over ten thousand degrees Celsius. The purple, mutagenic fog didn't just burn; its molecular bonds were entirely, violently disintegrated by the overwhelming plasma-fire.
From the safety of the roof, shielded by the sheer kinetic force of the railgun's output pushing the heat away from them, the Vanguard watched the apocalypse burn itself out. The blinding light cast stark, sharp shadows across the slate tiles, illuminating the faces of the four children who had just defeated an entire continent's biological arsenal using nothing but raw mathematics and applied thermodynamics.
As the plasma beam finally sputtered and died, the sky beneath the stone dome was completely clear.
