The Atomic Archmage: Hacking the Skill Panel with Science

Chapter 53: Breaking the Output Limit

"I am going to teach you what a real weapon looks like."

The molten slag beneath Ren’s boots hissed and popped, casting an eerie, hellish underlight across the fourteen-year-old physicist’s face. The blinding white pillar of mana roaring from his core illuminated the entire valley, temporarily banishing the unnatural darkness brought by the Hive-Mind.

But power of this magnitude demanded a toll.

The human nervous system is an electrical circuit, Ren calculated, his vision blurring slightly as a sharp, agonizing heat radiated from his chest down to his fingertips. Joule heating. The power dissipated as heat in a resistor is proportional to the square of the current multiplied by the resistance P=I^2 R. My biological vessel has too much resistance for this level of mana flow. I am cooking my own internal organs.

Thin, branching lines of brilliant, angry red began to spiderweb across the skin of Ren’s arms and neck. His capillaries were bursting under the sheer, unregulated pressure of his own magic.

From the manor steps, Elara screamed. "Ren! Stop! Your biological matrix is failing! You are going to trigger systemic organ collapse!"

The sixteen-year-old Head Maid dropped Kira and Lyla, desperately trying to run forward to pull him away. But the moment she took a step toward the courtyard, she hit an invisible wall of sheer, concussive pressure. Ren’s ambient mana field was so dense it was physically repelling the atmosphere, creating a gravitational localized storm that threw Elara backward onto the stone steps.

"Stay back, Elara!" Ren commanded, his voice strained but absolute. "That is an order!"

In the center of the molten crater, the fifty-foot Abomination was not dead.

Though its right leg had been completely unmade by atomic destabilization, the colossal, carriage-sized purple crystal embedded in its chest flared with a blinding, radioactive intensity. It wasn't just a power source; it was a biological 3D printer.

The beast plunged its remaining massive hand into the pile of scorched corpses surrounding the pyramid. The crystal pulsed, and the dead biomass was instantly violently absorbed, liquefying and rushing toward the Abomination's severed stump. In a matter of seconds, the flesh rapidly wove itself into a new, hyper-dense limb.

The Hive-Mind’s Avatar stood back up, towering over the bleeding boy.

It opened its jaw, which hinged in three separate places, revealing rows of jagged, obsidian-like teeth. The purple crystal hummed, drawing in massive amounts of ambient energy, compressing it into a localized singularity inside its throat.

"Master Ren!" Lyla roared, struggling to her hands and knees, reaching blindly for her hammer. "It's charging a breath attack!"

"Let it," Ren whispered, wiping the blood from his chin.

The Abomination unleashed the singularity.

It wasn't a beam of fire or ice. It was a torrent of pure, unadulterated, highly corrosive plasma, tainted with the purple, hyper-evolutionary mutagen. The beam was thirty feet wide, entirely engulfing Ren’s tiny figure, vaporizing the cobblestones and melting the bedrock into a glassy crater.

The beam sustained itself for five agonizing seconds, a roaring waterfall of absolute annihilation.

When the purple light finally ceased, the courtyard was a glowing, molten bowl of glass.

But standing dead center of the crater, completely untouched, was Ren Valerius.

He hadn't raised a shield. He had simply altered the refractive index of the space immediately surrounding his body, bending the beam of plasma around him like a river flowing around a perfectly smooth stone. The only damage was a slight singe to the hem of his pristine white coat.

"Is that the mathematical limit of your output?" Ren asked the towering beast, his voice perfectly level despite the blood pouring freely from both of his nostrils.

The Abomination roared in frustration, raising its bone-blade to strike again.

"My turn," Ren stated.

The young scientist didn't take a step forward. His physical muscles were beginning to lock up from the internal thermal damage. Instead, he raised both hands, his palms facing the massive, glowing purple crystal embedded in the monster's chest.

If I cannot safely channel enough mana through my biological circuits to destroy a target of this mass, Ren thought, his eyes narrowing with a dark, uncompromising brilliance, then I will use the target's own mass to destroy itself.

"Albert Einstein proposed a very simple, very elegant relationship between mass and energy," Ren lectured the apocalyptic titan, his voice echoing across the smoldering battlefield.

He pushed a tiny, hyper-concentrated thread of pure mana through the air, ignoring the beast's armor entirely. He targeted a single, microscopic speck of the biological chitin covering the beast's heart. Barely a fraction of a gram of matter.

He didn't hit the beast with a magical explosion. He forcefully unraveled the strong nuclear force holding the atomic nuclei of that single speck of chitin together. He converted that fraction of a gram of solid matter entirely, one hundred percent, into pure kinetic and thermal energy.

The result was a localized, sub-atomic detonation.

It wasn't a nuclear bomb, but localized inside the beast's chest cavity, it was mathematically devastating.

A blinding flash of pure, white-hot energy erupted from inside the Abomination's impenetrable armor. The sheer, instantaneous release of energy blew the front half of the monster's torso completely outward.

Thick, heavy plates of black chitin, pulverized bone, and liquefied muscle were violently ejected across the courtyard. The shockwave dropped the towering beast to its knees, its chest entirely hollowed out, exposing the massive, pulsating purple crystal holding the Hive-Mind’s consciousness.

"Target exposed," Ren gasped, his arms trembling violently. The internal heat in his blood was reaching critical levels. He had seconds before his heart stopped.

He locked his gaze onto the purple crystal.

The crystalline lattice is the receiver. Shatter the receiver, sever the tether.

Ren clenched his right fist. He summoned every remaining ounce of his raw, Omni-Elemental mana, bypassing all safety limiters, ignoring the excruciating, burning agony tearing through his veins.

He struck the air.

He delivered a telekinetic punch of such immense, concentrated kinetic force that the air itself cracked. The invisible shockwave crossed the distance instantly and slammed directly into the center of the exposed purple crystal.

CRRR-KRAAAACK.

The sound of the Hive-Mind’s ultimate artifact shattering echoed like breaking glass in a quiet cathedral.

The massive crystal violently fragmented into millions of jagged, glowing shards. The purple light that had illuminated the Dark Woods for the past twelve hours flickered, stuttered, and instantly died.

The telepathic tether was severed.

The fifty-foot Abomination froze. Without the Hive-Mind's active intelligence driving its fused, chaotic biology, the monstrous amalgamation simply ceased to function. Its thousands of purple eyes went dark simultaneously. The colossal beast swayed for a moment, then toppled backward like a felled redwood, crashing into the molten courtyard with a heavy, lifeless thud.

It was over.

On the manor steps, Elara, Lyla, and Kira stared in absolute, breathless silence. The impossible siege had been broken by a fourteen-year-old boy.

Ren stood in the center of the molten crater. He looked at the fallen titan.

"Checkmate," the physicist whispered.

Then, his biological limits finally exacted their toll. The blinding white pillar of mana surrounding him instantly snapped off. Ren’s eyes rolled back in his head. The internal thermal damage caused his legs to give out, and he collapsed forward into the scorched earth, completely unconscious.

"REN!" Elara screamed, entirely abandoning her Head Maid decorum.

The gravitational storm had dissipated. Elara sprinted across the smoking courtyard, uncaring as the superheated glass scorched the soles of her boots. Kira and Lyla followed a microsecond later, their own injuries completely forgotten in their sheer terror for their master.

Elara slid to her knees beside him, gently turning him over.

Ren was breathing, but it was shallow and ragged. His skin was terrifyingly hot to the touch, laced with the angry red spiderwebs of burst capillaries.

"His core temperature is fatally high," Elara panicked, her Statistical Probability Mapping returning horrifying biological metrics. "His mana circuits are completely fried. Lyla, we need to get him to the underground hot springs immediately! The magnesium and sulfur—"

"Elara. Wait," Kira interrupted, her voice trembling.

The thirteen-year-old fox-kin was standing over the massive corpse of the Abomination, staring into the hollowed-out chest cavity where the crystal had shattered.

"Kira, we don't have time!" Lyla roared, gently scooping Ren’s tiny, burning body into her massive arms.

"Look at the crystal," Kira whispered, taking a terrified step backward.

Elara turned her head.

The massive purple crystal had shattered, successfully killing the beast. But Ren’s kinetic strike hadn't vaporized the shards. It had merely pulverized them.

Deep inside the beast's chest cavity, millions of tiny, glowing purple fragments were rapidly dissolving. They were sublimating, transitioning instantly from solid matter into a dense, heavy gas.

A thick, luminous violet fog began to pour out of the beast's open chest. But this wasn't the localized cloud that Kira had sparked earlier. This was the entire, hyper-compressed biological payload of a Tier-5 Avatar.

The fog erupted outward like a volcanic plume, instantly expanding to a height of two hundred feet and rolling rapidly across the courtyard. It killed the grass, turned the stone black, and filled the air with a sickly, sweet smell of rotting flowers.

"The biological payload," Elara gasped, the horror dawning on her. "Master Ren warned us. The Avatar was a dirty bomb."

The mRNA inhibitor Ren had injected them with would protect the Vanguard. But the fog was massive. It was already creeping over the manor walls, rolling out toward the vast, unprotected fields of the Valerius Barony.

"The village," Lyla whispered, her eyes wide with terror as she clutched Ren to her chest. "The villagers are locked in the cellars, but the air vents... if that fog gets into the ventilation shafts, it will mutate the entire staff."

"It won't just mutate the staff," Elara said, her mind calculating the expansion rate of the toxic cloud. "With this wind vector, that fog will roll across the plains and reach the Capital in three days. It will infect the entire western half of the Kingdom."

Ren Valerius had won the physical battle. He had destroyed the Avatar.

But as the toxic, continent-ending plague rolled toward the manor, the exhausted Vanguard realized the true war had just begun. And for the first time in seven years, the brilliant physicist who always had the answers was completely unresponsive, bleeding out in Lyla’s arms.
