The Atomic Archmage: Hacking the Skill Panel with Science

Chapter 43: A Dance of Gravitational Pull

The subterranean training cavern had been stripped of all its usual comforts. The tea tables were pushed aside, the runic lights were dimmed to simulate nighttime combat, and the massive hot spring was sealed beneath a layer of obsidian.

Ren Valerius, thirteen years old and standing on an elevated iron gantry, looked down at his Vanguard.

"Individually, you are the most dangerous entities on this continent," Ren’s voice echoed through the cavern, amplified by a localized acoustic funnel. "Kira, your velocity is unmatched. Lyla, your kinetic output is absolute. Elara, your probability mapping ensures flawless defense."

Ren pressed a button on the brass console in front of him.

The far wall of the cavern ground open, revealing an array of one hundred automated, spring-loaded catapults Ren had built overnight. Each one was loaded with a dense, spinning disk of solid granite.

"But individual power is mathematically irrelevant against a horde of two million beasts," Ren continued coldly. "If you fight as individuals, you will exhaust your mana pools in twenty minutes. You will succumb to lactic acid buildup, and you will die. To survive the kill box, you cannot be three separate weapons."

Ren raised a piece of chalk and drew a diagram on the slate board suspended next to him. He drew a massive circle in the center, a smaller circle orbiting it, and a sharply angled line connecting their paths.

"You must become a single, self-sustaining solar system," Ren stated, his Earth-physicist persona slipping into absolute overdrive. "We are going to execute an orbital combat synergy."

He tapped the center circle.

"Lyla. You are the Sun. You have the highest mass and the highest kinetic output. In this formation, you do not chase the enemy. You anchor the center of the battlefield. Your Absolute Mass Output creates a localized gravitational well."

Lyla tightened her grip on her three-hundred-pound osmium hammer, her nineteen-year-old frame completely rigid with focus. "I am the Sun. Do not move from the center."

Ren tapped the smaller, orbiting circle.

"Kira. You are the Comet," Ren explained. "Your Electromagnetic Superconductivity allows you to reach Mach 2.5. But every time you stop to change direction, you waste immense energy overcoming your own inertia. In this formation, you will never stop. You will enter a continuous, elliptical orbit around Lyla."

Kira’s silver ears twitched. "But Master Ren, if I don't stop, how do I turn without the centrifugal force crushing my organs?"

Ren smiled, tapping the sharply angled line on the board.

"That is where Elara comes in," Ren said, looking at his sixteen-year-old Head Maid. "Elara, you are the gravitational slingshot. You will not build walls to stop the beasts. You will build frictionless, perfectly angled ramps directly in Kira’s flight path."

Elara’s golden eyes flared as her Statistical Probability Mapping instantly crunched the physics. "You want me to redirect her trajectory. If she hits an earth-ramp angled at exactly forty-five degrees while in her plasma tunnel, she won't lose momentum. She will ricochet."

"Exactly," Ren beamed. "Kira, you will ride Elara’s ramps to change vectors instantly without bleeding velocity. The formula for angular momentum is . By utilizing Elara's terrain manipulation, your velocity will actually compound with every rotation. You will act as a supersonic buzzsaw orbiting Lyla's central mass."

Ren gripped the release lever for the catapults.

"This is the Dance of Gravitational Pull. Lyla shatters the heavy armor. Elara maps the trajectories and manipulates the terrain. Kira rides the terrain to intercept the flankers. You move as one machine. One physics equation."

Ren pulled the lever.

THWACK-THWACK-THWACK.

One hundred solid granite disks launched into the air simultaneously, hurtling across the cavern at eighty miles per hour. They represented a swarm of leaping, rabid beasts.

"Execute!" Ren commanded.

Lyla roared. She didn't charge the incoming disks. She stepped forward, planting her carbon-cleated boots firmly into the center of the obsidian floor, anchoring herself as the Sun. She swung her massive hammer in a devastating upward arc.

BOOM.

The kinetic shockwave of her strike hit the first wave of ten granite disks. They didn't just break; they were instantly pulverized into fine dust by the localized pressure wave.

But the remaining ninety disks were spreading out, flanking Lyla’s position.

"Orbit established!" Kira shouted.

The air warped as Kira’s plasma tunnel ignited. She broke the sound barrier instantly, a streak of violent violet light shooting toward the left flank. She sliced through five granite disks in a microsecond, but she was hurtling directly toward the cavern wall at Mach 2.

She didn't brake. She didn't panic.

"Vector shifting!" Elara called out. Her hands glowed with earth mana.

A perfectly smooth, frictionless slab of stone erupted from the floor exactly three feet in front of Kira, angled perfectly to catch her trajectory.

Kira’s boots hit the ramp. The aerodynamic slope caught her immense kinetic energy and seamlessly redirected it. Instead of crashing into the wall, Kira ricocheted backward at a perfect angle, her speed actually increasing as she slung into an elliptical orbit around Lyla's back.

CRACK-CRACK-CRACK.

Kira became a continuous, rebounding laser of silver and blue light. Elara’s hands moved like a maestro conducting a symphony, summoning microscopic ramps and banked curves just fractions of a second before Kira’s boots touched the ground.

Kira bounced off the walls, the floor, and the ceiling, completely unbound by gravity, effortlessly shredding the granite disks out of the air.

"Target dense cluster. Center-right!" Elara commanded, her golden eyes tracking thirty disks converging on Lyla’s blind spot. "Lyla, acoustic vacuum! Kira, intercept!"

Lyla didn't swing at the disks. She slammed her hammer directly into the floor. The phase-cancellation wave rippled outward, creating a momentary, localized vacuum in the air pressure right in front of her.

Kira rode an inverted ramp off the ceiling, diving straight down into the vacuum pocket Lyla had just created. With zero air resistance, Kira’s daggers spun into a lethal, supersonic cyclone. She obliterated all thirty granite disks in a single pass, then immediately hit a ramp Elara placed at the base of Lyla’s boots, slingshotting her safely back into the outer orbit.

It was breathtaking.

They weren't fighting. They were dancing.

Lyla provided the crushing gravity and the acoustic manipulation. Elara provided the mathematical geometry and the frictionless rails. Kira provided the relentless, inescapable velocity.

Crack. Boom. Shatter.

In exactly four-point-two seconds, the cavern fell dead silent.

A thick cloud of pulverized granite dust drifted through the air. All one hundred targets had been entirely annihilated.

Ren looked down at the telemetry on his console.

"Mana expenditure," Ren read, his voice barely above a whisper. "Lyla: three percent. Elara: two percent. Kira: one-point-five percent."

Down on the floor, the Vanguard stood amidst the dust.

Kira skidded to a halt, the plasma tunnel collapsing. She didn't drop to her knees panting. She barely looked winded. Because she hadn't constantly fought her own inertia to stop and turn, her biological output was virtually entirely conserved.

Lyla rested her hammer on the ground, a massive grin spreading across her face. "I didn't even break a sweat. I just stood here and let Kira do the running!"

Elara slowly lowered her hands, the golden light fading from her eyes. She looked around the cavern, analyzing the pulverized dust.

For her entire life, Elara had viewed the world through the lens of a servant. Even when she earned her Mythic class, she had thought of herself as a maid who happened to be good at protecting her master.

But as she looked at Lyla and Kira, feeling the flawless, telepathic synergy they had just achieved, the illusion of servitude finally shattered.

"We aren't maids," Elara whispered, the profound realization echoing in the quiet cavern.

Kira walked over, her silver tail swishing slowly. "What are we, Elara?"

"We are an army," Elara stated, looking up at Ren on the gantry. "A mathematically perfect army of three."

Ren walked down the metal stairs, his white coat catching the dim runic light. He stepped onto the obsidian floor, his dark eyes glowing with an intense, overwhelming pride that made all three girls stand a little taller.

"You are the Vanguard," Ren corrected softly, stepping up to them. "The Capital has sixty thousand men in their legions. The Hive-Mind has millions of biological horrors. But none of them have the slightest comprehension of orbital mechanics, applied thermodynamics, or phase interference."

He reached out, placing a hand on Elara’s shoulder, then Lyla’s, and finally resting his hand on Kira’s silver head.

"You just destroyed a hundred high-velocity targets in four seconds without breaking a sweat," Ren said, a fierce, brilliant smile breaking across his face. "When the stampede enters the western gorge, they are going to drown in a sea of fire. And anyone who manages to survive the flames will have to face the three of you."

Lyla pounded a massive fist against her chest. "They won't take a single step past the gorge, Master Ren."

Kira’s fangs showed in a confident, dangerous grin. "I'll make sure they don't even see us coming."

"Good," Ren said, stepping back. He pulled his silver pocket watch from his coat and clicked it open. The hands hovered just past midnight.

"In twenty-four hours, the final preparations for the petroleum trench will be complete," Ren announced, closing the watch. "And in twenty-four hours, I will officially be fourteen years old."

Elara’s expression softened, the fierce tactician melting back into the devoted caretaker. "We will have Martha prepare a feast, Ren. You have worked relentlessly for weeks. You deserve to celebrate."

"There will be no feast, Elara," Ren said quietly, looking toward the dark stone wall that separated their sanctuary from the earth beyond. "Tomorrow night, the optical illusion drops. Tomorrow night, we light the match."

The Vanguard nodded in unison. There was no fear left in their hearts, only the cold, unyielding certainty of the physics their master had taught them. The eve of adulthood was upon them, and with it, the apocalypse.
