The Atomic Archmage: Hacking the Skill Panel with Science

Chapter 42: Scouting the Dark Woods

The slate tiles of the manor roof were freezing under Ren’s boots, coated in a thin layer of early morning frost. It was 2:00 AM. The Valerius Barony was entirely silent, safely tucked beneath its shimmering, geothermal optical illusion.

Ren stood at the edge of the roof, his hands tucked into the pockets of his white coat. At thirteen years old, his physical frame was finally beginning to catch up to the sharp, calculating intellect of the reincarnated physicist within.

Beside him stood Kira.

The thirteen-year-old fox-kin wore her pitch-black, non-Newtonian combat suit. Her silver hair was tied back flawlessly by the midnight-blue atmospheric dissipator ribbon Ren had engineered. She wasn't bouncing on her toes tonight. Her amber eyes were locked onto the pitch-black horizon of the Dark Woods, glowing with the focused, terrifying intensity of an apex predator.

"Let us review the parameters," Ren said softly, his breath pluming in the freezing air.

"Objective: purely observational," Kira recited, her voice steady. "I am a lens, not a blade. I will map the geographical density of the horde, identify the biological siege commanders, and return. I will not engage."

"Good," Ren nodded. He reached out and gently adjusted the collar of her suit, slipping a small, perfectly polished disk of mirrored quartz into a customized pouch on her chest. "Your Mythic-class nervous system processes visual data at an incredibly high frame rate. When you return, I will use a localized optic-nerve sync to project your short-term memory through this quartz lens. I will see exactly what you saw."

"A living camera," Elara noted, stepping onto the roof behind them.

The sixteen-year-old Head Maid held a glowing slate, her Statistical Probability Mapping actively tracking the ambient barometric pressure. "Wind resistance is minimal. The air is dry. Optimal conditions for plasma tunneling, Kira."

Lyla stood by the roof access door, her massive, nineteen-year-old frame wrapped in a heavy wool shawl over her uniform. She looked nervous, clutching the handle of her osmium hammer. "Be careful, Kira. If something grabs you, just yell. I'll throw my hammer all the way to the center of the woods."

"If you throw that hammer fifty miles, Lyla, you will alter the planet's orbit," Ren smiled warmly, though his eyes remained serious. He looked back at Kira. "Fifty miles in, fifty miles back. At Mach 2.0, your round trip will take exactly two minutes and thirty seconds. If you are not back in three minutes, I am firing the railgun into the woods to clear a path."

Kira leaned forward, nuzzling her cold nose affectionately against Ren’s cheek. "I'll be back in two minutes and twenty seconds, Master Ren. Keep my tea warm."

She turned toward the forest.

Kira closed her eyes. She didn't tense her muscles; she engaged her electromagnetic field. A high-pitched, metallic whine filled the air. A blinding, translucent cone of blue energy formed directly in front of her nose, violently ionizing the freezing air into a shimmering violet plasma.

Pop.

There was no sonic boom. The atmospheric pressure simply folded around her.

Kira vanished.

For Kira, the world didn't blur; it simply stretched.

Running inside the frictionless vacuum of her plasma tunnel, she felt no wind, no cold, and no resistance. She was a silent, violet ghost carving a straight line through the dense, ancient trees of the Dark Woods. Her feet barely touched the earth, her cleats perfectly applying micro-kinetic bursts to propel her forward.

Ten miles. Twenty miles. Thirty miles.

The deeper she ran, the more the forest changed. The healthy, vibrant pines and ancient oaks of the outer rim gave way to something horrific.

The trees were dying, their bark turning a sickly, ashen gray. Thick, pulsating purple vines choked the undergrowth, dripping a corrosive, alkaline mucus that sizzled as it hit the dead soil.

At forty-five miles, the forest abruptly ended.

Kira aborted her plasma tunnel, her cleats carving a fifty-yard trench into the dead earth as she flawlessly bled off her Mach 2 velocity. She came to a silent halt at the edge of a massive, sweeping cliff.

She looked down into the valley below.

Her breath hitched. Her heart, normally perfectly regulated by her superconducting nervous system, slammed violently against her ribs.

"Master Ren..." Kira whispered to herself, absolute horror bleeding into her amber eyes.

The valley was easily ten miles across. It was utterly devoid of natural life. Instead, it was a sprawling, horrific industrial complex built entirely out of biomass.

There were millions of them. Mutated wolves, bears, drakes, and massive, unrecognizable abominations, all crawling over each other in a writhing sea of fur, scales, and chitin. But they weren't a mindless, chaotic mob.

They were organized.

In the center of the valley stood massive, towering spires made of fused bone and hardened mud, glowing with the sickening purple light of the Hive-Mind’s telepathic crystals. Around the spires, thousands of worker-beasts were actively digging massive pits. Silt-Drakes were vomiting acidic mucus into the craters, while flying Wyverns dropped massive, writhing egg-sacs into the chemical baths to hyper-accelerate their incubation.

They weren't just gathering an army. They were breeding biological siege engines.

Kira’s enhanced eyes zoomed in on the far side of the valley.

Strapped to the backs of colossal, hundred-ton tortoise-beasts were massive, biological cannons—hollowed-out bone structures packed with highly pressurized, explosive spore-sacs.

They have artillery, Kira realized, her mind capturing every single agonizing detail like a high-speed camera. They are building armor-piercing units to break the Capital's walls.

Suddenly, the hair on the back of Kira’s neck stood straight up.

In the very center of the valley, the largest bone spire pulsed. The purple crystal at its apex flared blindingly bright.

It wasn't a random pulse. It was a localized electromagnetic radar sweep. And Kira, with her superconducting nervous system fully engaged, was glowing on the Hive-Mind's spectrum like a lighthouse in the dark.

A collective, deafening screech erupted from the valley.

Millions of heads snapped upward, their glowing purple eyes locking onto the tiny cliff where Kira stood. The Hive-Mind had found the scout.

Kira didn't panic. She remembered Ren's equations. Emotion is a variable that ruins efficiency.

She turned on her heel.

From the valley below, a dozen flying Razor-Wyverns launched into the sky, their acoustic wings buzzing violently as they accelerated on an intercept vector. From the artillery-tortoises, three massive, pressurized spore-sacs were fired into the air, tracing deadly, parabolic arcs toward her position.

Incoming projectiles, Kira calculated, her mind moving at the speed of thought.

She dropped low. The plasma cone ignited in front of her face, glowing a brilliant, blinding blue.

She launched herself forward just as the cliff face she had been standing on was utterly vaporized by the biological artillery strike. A massive shower of acid and shattered rock rained down on the forest, but Kira was already gone.

She pushed her output to the absolute maximum. Mach 2.2. Mach 2.4. Mach 2.5.

The trees blurred into a solid wall of gray. The Wyverns diving from the sky tried to intercept her, but their biological flight speeds topped out at Mach 1.2. Kira sliced right between two of them, the intense heat of her plasma tunnel violently searing their wings off before they even registered she had passed them.

She was a streak of localized lightning. The entire forest seemed to vibrate with the sheer kinetic anger of the Hive-Mind chasing her, but physics was an absolute law, and Kira owned the math.

On the roof of the manor, Ren checked his pocket watch.

"Two minutes, twenty-five seconds," Ren said, gripping the edge of the slate tiles.

"She is approaching the perimeter," Elara reported, her golden eyes tracking a massive, high-speed atmospheric disruption tearing through the illusion barrier.

Pop.

A violent rush of displaced wind washed over the roof.

Kira skidded to a halt directly in front of Ren, her cleats sparking against the slate. The plasma tunnel collapsed, releasing a heavy cloud of ozone.

Kira was panting heavily, her silver fur sticking to her forehead with sweat, but she was completely uninjured.

Before she could even salute, Ren stepped forward and wrapped his arms tightly around her, burying his face in her silver hair. "Flawless execution, Kira. You're safe."

Kira melted into the hug, letting out a shaky, exhausted sigh as she wrapped her arms around his waist. "I didn't engage, Master Ren. I just watched."

"I know," Ren said gently, stepping back. He reached into her pouch and retrieved the quartz disk. "Now, let us see what the enemy is building."

Ten minutes later, the Vanguard was gathered around the obsidian workbench in the subterranean laboratory.

Ren placed the quartz disk into a complex brass projector he had wired to a localized light-crystal. He gently pressed his fingers against Kira’s temples, syncing her electromagnetic neural output directly into the crystal.

The projector clicked. A beam of light shot across the room, projecting Kira's memories perfectly onto the blank stone wall like a moving, high-definition film.

The laboratory fell dead silent.

Elara, Lyla, and Ren stared at the projection of the ten-mile-wide valley. They watched the hyper-accelerated breeding pits. They watched the massive, heavily armored artillery beasts. They watched the sheer, overwhelming, mathematically impossible density of the horde.

Lyla swallowed hard, her grip tightening on her hammer. "Master Ren... there are millions of them."

Elara’s eyes flickered gold, but the light was erratic. Her mapping was struggling to process the sheer volume of variables. "The biomass is staggering. Even if we route them around the optical illusion, the localized gravitational pressure of that many beasts marching at once will cause the bedrock to collapse. They will accidentally crush the manor just by walking past it."

Ren didn't say a word. The reincarnated physicist stared at the biological war machine on the wall.

The Capital’s armies couldn't stop this. Magic couldn't stop this.

"They have artillery capable of vaporizing stone," Ren analyzed quietly, pointing to the bone-cannons. "Which means an evasion strategy is no longer viable. If they blindly fire into the mirage, a stray shot will breach the manor."

Ren turned off the projector. The room plunged back into the sterile white glow of the runic lights.

He looked at his Vanguard. Elara, normally so composed, looked genuinely terrified. Lyla was pale. Kira was shivering slightly from the phantom adrenaline of her escape.

"The seven-year peace is over," Ren stated, his voice ringing with absolute, uncompromising authority. "The optical illusion is no longer a sufficient defense. We cannot simply hide from a weapon of this magnitude."

Ren walked over to his chalkboard. He erased the elegant, curved lines of the aerodynamic mirage barrier.

He picked up a piece of thick white chalk.

"If the fluid is too dense to be redirected," Ren said, his dark eyes locking onto his team with a fierce, brilliant fire. "Then we are going to evaporate the fluid."

He drew a massive, solid line across the board, completely blocking the path of the valley.

"Lyla. You are going to dig a trench across the entire western valley gorge. Fifty feet deep. A hundred feet wide."

He turned to Elara. "Elara. I need you to synthesize every single drop of raw petroleum and flammable gas from the subterranean bedrock and route it directly into that trench."

He looked at Kira. "Kira. We are upgrading your plasma output. I am going to teach you how to ignite an entire atmosphere."

Ren dropped the chalk.

"We are not hiding anymore," the young physicist declared. "We are going to build a kill box. And when the Hive-Mind steps into it, we are going to burn them with the fury of a dying star."
