Chapter 107: If You Repay Evil with Kindness, With What Will You Repay Kindness?
Luna Morgan looked up at Jane Lancaster. "Miss Lancaster, I’ve been waiting for you all evening."
Jane Lancaster smiled. "Oh. Then you’ve had quite a wait."
Luna Morgan’s feelings were a mess. She never imagined that Mama Knight had once been a nanny for Samuel Miller’s family, or that she’d been sent to prison by the Millers for allegedly stealing a gold bracelet and had hated Samuel Miller ever since.
She also hadn’t expected Samuel Miller to pull such a clumsy prank just to get revenge for her.
And that someone had seen it coming, setting a trap for him to walk right into.
Luna Morgan mustered her courage and said, "Miss Lancaster, I want to apologize on behalf of Supervisor Miller. I’m sorry. He only did it because he believed the rumors that Mama Knight was bullying me and wanted to stand up for me."
Jane Lancaster said, "You don’t have to take the blame. This has nothing to do with you."
’Samuel Miller is just a petty jerk who wanted to crush Mama Knight. He would’ve done it with or without you.’
Luna Morgan’s expression was grave. "No, it’s all my fault. Today’s incident happened because of me."
Jane Lancaster already knew the "heroine" had a strong moral compass, so she didn’t argue the point.
"Alright, you’ve made your apology. If there’s nothing else, you should go home. It’s late. Get some sleep." She was barely keeping her eyes open, for goodness’ sake!
Luna Morgan said, "Wait! Supervisor Miller is still at the police station. He knows he was wrong. He never meant to actually hurt Mama Knight, he was just trying to prank her. I’m begging you, please let him off the hook!"
Jane Lancaster stopped in her tracks. "So you think planting a watch worth over a million in someone’s bag, framing them as a thief, and then calling the police... all of that is just a ’prank’?"
Luna Morgan suddenly realized her mistake. "I’m sorry, that’s not what I meant..."
’The saintly heroine will, of course, forgive the entire world. But why are you forgiving him on Mama Knight’s behalf?’
’Just because Mama Knight didn’t end up framed and sent to prison like they wanted, does that mean she deserves this?’
Jane Lancaster sighed. "This has nothing to do with you. Can I please ask you not to get involved?"
Luna Morgan didn’t want to give up. The Miller family had already approached her, saying they were willing to pay for her help.
But she wasn’t doing it for the money; she was doing it because her conscience was bothering her.
She couldn’t bear to see such an outstanding person with a limitless future be completely ruined over a small mistake.
"He made a mistake, but the crime doesn’t merit this punishment. Miss Lancaster, he’s already been expelled from the art association. That lesson is harsh enough. If Mama Knight still isn’t satisfied, the Miller family is willing to compensate her for emotional distress!"
Inside the car, Mama Knight’s fury instantly ignited.
She threw the car door open, about to shout that she didn’t want any compensation, but a single glance from Jane Lancaster made her back down immediately.
The young miss didn’t want her to interfere, so it was best to leave it alone.
Jane Lancaster asked with a smile, "Is that so? How much is the Miller family willing to offer?"
Luna Morgan thought she saw an opening and breathed a sigh of relief. "Five hundred thousand. If that’s not enough, they can add more."
She knew Jane Lancaster wouldn’t care about such a small amount of money, but what about Mama Knight?
Mama Knight had no children. Although she had sisters, they all had their own families. She had to think about her own retirement, right?
’Given the Miller family’s arrogant attitude, there’s no way they’d willingly pay Mama Knight that much money.’
Jane Lancaster made a reasonable guess. "That five hundred thousand is actually the fee the Millers are paying you, isn’t it?"
Luna Morgan wasn’t used to lying, and her gaze flickered away. "No, it’s not."
Jane Lancaster understood completely. "Why don’t you call the Miller family right now and ask if they’re willing to compensate Mama Knight with one million?"
"That much?" Luna Morgan was stunned. How could she possibly have that much money?
"One million isn’t that much, is it? Samuel Miller’s watch alone is worth over a million. The Miller family can afford it without even breaking a sweat."
’I get it. The five hundred thousand really is Luna Morgan’s ’service fee.’’
’They’re willing to pay someone else for help, but they won’t compensate Mama Knight directly. It must be because, deep down, they feel she’s not worthy.’
’Wait, Luna Morgan’s expression is off. Don’t tell me the Miller family isn’t even willing to pay five hundred thousand?’
Jane Lancaster suddenly asked, "How much did the Miller family actually give you? Two hundred thousand? Three hundred thousand? Were you planning to cover the rest yourself?"
"I’m sorry..." Luna Morgan thought she was terrifying, as if she could see right through people.
The Miller family had approached her and were indeed only willing to give her a two-hundred-thousand service fee. She figured that since she was about to finish restoring an ancient painting, asking for three hundred thousand shouldn’t be too excessive.
That would add up to five hundred thousand. Rescuing Samuel Miller with it would be a good deed.
Unfortunately, Jane Lancaster saw right through her and even named the sky-high price of one million... She could barely scrape together five hundred thousand; one million was completely out of the question.
She hesitated for a moment, glanced at Mama Knight in the car, and seemed to make up her mind.
"If I can pull together one million, will Mama Knight really agree to drop the charges?"
In the car, Mama Knight couldn’t help but let out an angry laugh.
Even though the young miss had warned her not to offend people easily, she couldn’t stop herself from saying a few words.
Where did this weirdo come from? Did she really think she was some kind of living Bodhisattva, here to save all of humanity?
The young miss had been so patient and tolerant with her, and was still willing to speak to her nicely, coaxing and persuading her.
But she just didn’t understand plain language. She was trying to force the issue, all while acting like she was making some huge sacrifice.
Pah! Who cares about your sacrifice?
"I’m not dropping the charges! I will never drop the charges or settle!" Mama Knight threw the car door open and stepped out. "No matter how much money you scrape together, you can’t buy my dignity! I don’t want money! I just want Samuel Miller to get what he deserves!"
Luna Morgan was frightened by Mama Knight’s cold, resolute demeanor. Her eyes instantly turned red. "Mama Knight, that’s not what I meant..."
Mama Knight’s chest heaved violently. "I’m the one who won’t forgive him! What’s the use of begging the young miss? If you have a problem, take it up with me!"
Luna Morgan looked helplessly at Jane Lancaster.
But Jane Lancaster didn’t look at her. Instead, she walked over and wrapped an arm around Mama Knight, patting her on the back. "Alright, don’t be angry. Let’s go home."
After helping Mama Knight into the car and getting her settled, Jane Lancaster finally turned back to Luna Morgan. "This has nothing to do with you. Stop getting involved. It’s late, you should go home."
Her tone was gentle and calm, with no hint of blame, but Luna Morgan was overcome with shame.
’In their eyes, I must seem horrible, right?’
But she was truly acting out of the goodness of her heart. She didn’t understand why things had to end in mutual destruction.
"Alright, don’t cry." Alvin Lancaster had been waiting for a long time. Seeing Luna Morgan still standing frozen in place, he couldn’t help but step out.
Luna Morgan snapped back to reality, only then realizing that tears were streaming down her face.
"Alvin, when did you get here?" Seeing Alvin Lancaster’s calm expression, it dawned on her that he must have heard everything.
Luna Morgan felt crushed and desperately sought validation.
After the kidnapping incident, Alvin Lancaster was the first person to take her side. Surely, he would understand her difficulties.
"Alvin, Mama Knight and Miss Lancaster really misunderstood me! I just believe in forgiving people when you can. I wasn’t deliberately trying to humiliate Mama Knight with money! I’m not some rich person either..."
"I know. You’re just too kind, willing to sacrifice your own interests to help others."
"But if you repay grievance with kindness, with what do you repay kindness?" Alvin Lancaster sighed. "Luna, you shouldn’t have come today."
Hearing the hint of blame in his tone, Luna Morgan froze.
