Chapter 19: You mean I have a tree root somewhere in my body?

“Pardon?” Adria asked as she glanced over her shoulder at Sarah, who quickly said. “Nothing, I just have faith Tia will put us in the same starter village.”

“Good luck with that,” Adria teased before glancing back at John and saying sweetly. “Remember to come ask me anything you're unsure about; also make sure to add me as a friend once you're inside Genesis.”

John nodded and was about to reply when he noticed that they were approaching the end of a corridor that had no door. He glanced behind himself in confusion while asking, “Did we take a wrong turn?”

{Oh my god, he’s so sweet, I can’t help but tease him.} Adria squealed internally while she said, “No, we’re exactly where we’re supposed to be.”

“Really?” John asked in confusion.

{Oh my god, his confused look is so precious; I just wish he didn’t have those bangs in the way. He really needs a haircut.}

Adria knocked her knuckle against the wall while saying, “This is one of several entrances to the inner palace; however, for security reasons it is only accessible via magic.”

“Magic?” John repeated in surprise before excitedly asking. “You can both use magic?”

Both women smiled happily as they saw his excited reaction before Adria continued. “We can; members of the imperial family have always been gifted with the use of magic, which is why the entrances to the inner palace require it.”

After replying, Adria turned back to the wall and placed her hand on it before stating her name in a clear voice, “Princess Adria Bristle.”

As soon as she finished speaking, the wall seemed to distort, and John had to rub his eyes as it looked like it was moving, like the surface of water in a sink. The next thing he saw made his jaw drop open as Adria pushed her hand forward, causing it to disappear within the wall.

Adria and Sarah both enjoyed his reaction and couldn’t help but break out in laughter at it.

“I take it that’s the first time you've ever seen magic?” Sarah asked while wiping a tear from her eye.

"Yes,” John nodded.

“Well, there's nothing to worry about,” Adria said reassuringly. “This wall has a magic circle engraved on it so that when someone recognised by the circle presses their hand against and speaks their name, the wall becomes phased for a short time, allowing them to pass through it, watch.”

As she finished speaking, Adria stepped forward and vanished into the wall. John said in shock while Sarah tried not to laugh again before a hand emerged from the wall and made an inviting gesture.

“Wow,” John said as he stepped closer and inspected the wall closely.

Sarah smirked at this before quietly moving around behind John and giving him a shove in the back. John staggered forward and passed right through the wall and into Adria, who was waiting on the other side.

Adria saw him coming at the last moment and quickly managed to dodge to the side while John staggered forward a few more steps before he managed to stabilise himself.

“Slow down, John; we’ve only just met,” Adria stated in a playful tone. “You need to work harder than that if you want to catch this princess.”

John didn’t reply except to look back at the wall with a thoughtful expression, much to Adria’s disappointment.

Sarah followed through a few seconds later with a playful smirk on her face, “Enjoy the trip?”

“Let me guess, you pushed him?” Adria asked as she quickly figured out what Sarah meant by her words.

Sarah stuck her tongue out and was about to respond when John said, “That felt… strange."

“Wait, you felt something?” Sarah asked in surprise.

"Hoo, you could feel something, could you?” Adria asked with interest. “Tell me what you could feel."

"It was not from me; I felt something from Sarah’s hand when she pushed me," John replied.

“I used a small amount of magic when I pushed you through the wall, just to be on the safe side,” Sarah stated before adding. "Tell us more about what you felt, John."

"It felt warm and peaceful. It made me wish you had left your hand there forever. Then, when I passed through the wall, I thought I saw something."

“Saw something?” Sarah repeated as both women shared a look. "What do you think you saw? Can you describe it?"

John closed his eyes and was silent for a moment, trying to think about what it was he saw and how best to describe it. Then, with his eyes still closed, he said, "A huge tree, far larger than any I have ever seen; it seemed to stretch out into space.

"That's good, John, very good," Adria stated and she and Sarah shared a knowing look while smiling.

"It is?" John asked as he opened his eyes again and looked at the pair with confusion.

At his response, both women’s smiles turned into surprise before Adria put her hand on her face and asked, "My god, did they teach you nothing about magic in school?"

"No," John replied flatly.

“That damn bitch,” Sarah cursed before explaining. "We of the human race have to be fifteen before we can take the test to see if we have an aptitude for magic. As you're probably unaware, since they didn’t teach you any of this, the test is done by sending a small amount of magic through your body and seeing if there is a reaction or it just disappears.

Forcing magic into an individual's body before they're old enough can cause serious damage to that individual's body because of their incomplete mana veins.”

“I’m aware of that much,” John replied. “While I was still fourteen, a few months away from turning fifteen, the second youngest in my year turned fifteen, and so the school decided it was time to conduct the test.

"When I reminded my homeroom teacher that I was still not of age, her response was, ‘Oh, right, you're in this year too, aren't you, well whatever am sure you will be fine.'

In the end, I had to decide if I should take the test and possibly cripple myself or not take the risk it as I still had to work to eat. I decided the risk wasn’t worth it and so did not take the test. I figured that even if I did have an aptitude for magic, which is actually only around a fifty percent chance in our race, what good would it do me if I was crippled."

As John finished his explanation, Adria and Sarah wore looks of disgust on their faces before Sarah said, "I'm so sorry to hear they treated you that way, John."

John didn’t respond except to give Sarah a grateful smile, which she returned.

Adria took a moment to calm herself before saying with a smile, "The tree you saw was Yggdrasil, the tree of life and magic. The elves believe that their race originated from Yggdrasil and that when they finally die, they return to her. You being able to see Yggdrasil means that you have a piece of her root inside you and that you have the aptitude to use magic."

John's eyes widened in surprise, and as the two women thought he was surprised about being able to use magic, John asked in a worried tone, "You mean I have a tree root somewhere in my body?"

After he asked his question, he started to pat his body as if he was trying to feel said tree root, causing the two women to burst into laughter at his reaction, as they had never heard anything so silly.

Normally, people of the non-elven races were ecstatic when they heard they could use magic; after all, only the elves were guaranteed to be able to use magic. John, however, was worried that something strange had somehow found its way into his body.

"Calm down, John; that's not what Adrea meant." Sarah struggled to say through her continued chuckling. "It's more of a spiritual root than an actual one. All magic in our bodies comes from our root, as it is that root that connects us to Yggdrasil; without that root, we can't use magic."

John sighed in relief before scratching the back of his neck and asking sheepishly, "I just made a fool of myself, didn't I?"

“Oh yeah,” Adria chuckled while Sarah nodded beside her before saying, “It’s strange you didn’t take the chance to read up on magic in your school library."

"There were no books on magic in the library; the section that was supposed to contain the books was completely empty."

"Hmm, strange. The study of magic is not banned, and anyone can learn about it if they wish. Even those that can't use it, I will have to ask Mother about this." Adria said with a thoughtful look.

"I agree that would be prudent,” Sarah nodded. “But let's not dwell on this now; first we should get your medical examination started since we need to check how bad the poisoning is. Also, it is advised not to use magic while infected with the MK VI poison since it interferes with the mana veins. Before it was first discovered, several people died from using magic because they were poisoned."

"Come, John, this way. We will head over to get you checked out straight away and also sort out your access band upgrade," Adria stated as she began to walk along the corridor,

John and Sarah followed her and as John’s eyes once again began to drop towards Adria’s ass, he caught something moving out of the corner of his eye. As he turned to look in that direction, he couldn’t help but yell out, “WHAT?”
