So I Got Reincarnated as a Slime?! — Infinite Evolution

Chapter 14: The Voice in the Dark

The tunnel narrowed to a throat of stone, damp and cold and humming with a sound Caelan felt more than heard—a vibration beneath the range of his senses, like the echo of a bell struck long ago. He oozed forward, his Bioluminescence dialed to its faintest glow, casting just enough light to reveal the walls.

They were carved.

Not naturally eroded. Not scratched by claws. Deliberately shaped, smoothed by tools, marked with symbols that had no place in a ravine miles from any known civilization. Spirals. Circles within circles. A repeating motif of something that might have been an eye, or a star, or both.

These are old, Caelan thought. Older than the kobolds. Older than the forest.

The voice came again, clearer now. It wasn't speaking to him—it was chanting, a rhythmic repetition of syllables that rose and fell like breathing. The language was unfamiliar, but the cadence was universal. A prayer. A warning. A lament.

The tunnel opened into a chamber.

It was circular, maybe thirty feet across, its ceiling lost in darkness. In the center, a pool of black water reflected Caelan's faint blue glow like a mirror made of oil. And at the edge of the pool, huddled in a posture of exhaustion or despair, was a figure.

Humanoid. Thin to the point of emaciation. Its skin was pale gray, stretched tight over bones that seemed too long, too angular. Its hands—four-fingered, each digit tipped with a pearl-white claw—were pressed against the stone floor. Its eyes were closed. Its mouth moved, forming the syllables of the chant.

Not human, Caelan noted. Not kobold. Something else.

He hovered at the chamber's entrance, uncertain. The creature hadn't noticed him. It seemed entirely absorbed in its ritual, its voice growing hoarser with each repetition. Whatever it was doing, it had been doing it for a long time.

Caelan cleared his metaphorical throat. "Hello?"

The chanting stopped.

The creature's eyes opened. They were silver—not the silver of metal, but the silver of moonlight on water, luminous and depthless. They fixed on Caelan with an intensity that made his membrane prickle.

"A slime," it said. The words were in the kobold tongue, accented strangely but comprehensible. "A slime has come to the Sunken Temple. How... unexpected."

"I followed the voice. What is this place?"

The creature smiled. Its teeth were too white, too sharp. "This is a prison. I am the prisoner. And you—" It tilted its head, studying him with those silver eyes. "You are not a normal slime."

"I've been told."

"No. You don't understand." The creature leaned forward, and Caelan felt the weight of its attention like a physical pressure. "I have been here for three thousand years. In that time, many things have crawled into this chamber. Insects. Serpents. Once, a burrowing mole the size of my thumb. None of them spoke. None of them glowed with stolen Bioluminescence. None of them carried the scent of Infinite Evolution."

Caelan went very still. "You know what I am."

"I know what you carry. The question is—" The creature's silver eyes narrowed. "Do you?"

Author's Note

Well. That escalated.

Three thousand years. A Sunken Temple. A creature that recognizes Infinite Evolution on sight. Caelan came to the ravine looking for venomous lizards and found something far more significant—a prisoner who knows things about his ability that even the System hasn't revealed.

Who is this ancient being? Why was it imprisoned? And what does it know about Infinite Evolution that Caelan doesn't? The next few chapters are going to be heavy on lore and light on combat, but I promise the action will return. Some conversations are more dangerous than fights.
