Chapter 13: What Died Below
The ravine floor descended into shadow, the morning light thinning to a pale green thread high above. Caelan moved carefully, his vibration sense mapping every crack and crevice. The scent of decay thickened with each yard—copper and rot, but something else beneath it. Something acrid. Chemical.
Like battery acid, he thought. Something here didn't just die. It burst.
He found the corpse around a bend in the ravine, where the walls widened into a natural amphitheater of weeping stone. It was enormous—a serpent easily twenty feet long, its body coiled in death around a shattered iron-bark root. Its scales had been a deep emerald once. Now they were cracked and dull, oozing a pale fluid that smoked where it touched the stone.
Vine Serpent, his mind supplied, drawing from fragments of kobold lore Grath had shared. Rare. Territorial. Extinct in this part of the forest, supposedly.
The cause of death was obvious. A wound in its side, blackened and spreading, where something had torn through scale and muscle. The edges of the wound were dissolving. The serpent hadn't just been killed. It had been poisoned.
Something out there hunts venomous serpents, Caelan realized. Something worse than the serpent itself.
He didn't have time to dwell on the implications. The vibration sense flared. The fourth thorn-lizard, the one that had fled, wasn't as far away as he'd assumed. It was here. Crouched on the serpent's corpse, spines flared, hissing a warning at the slime that had slaughtered its pack.
Caelan didn't hesitate. He lunged.
The lizard sprayed venom in a desperate arc, but Caelan was already beneath it, Mandible Bite driving upward through the softer scales of its belly. The creature convulsed once and went still.
[Absorption complete.]
[Biomass acquired. 5 units.]
[Acid Slime path: 5/5. Requirement met.]
[Evolution path unlocked: Acid Slime.]
He released the body and let it roll down the serpent's coils. Four kills. One evolution path secured. But the hunt had raised questions he couldn't answer. What had killed the serpent? What kind of predator could poison something that was itself venomous? And was it still nearby?
The narrative has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the infringement.
System, he thought, can I absorb the serpent?
[Target has been deceased beyond optimal absorption window. Skill extraction unlikely. Biomass extraction possible but reduced.]
How reduced?
[Estimated yield: 12-15 units. Warning: Target's tissues contain residual corrosive venom. Absorption may damage membrane.]
But I have Acid Slime unlocked. Would that help?
The System paused. [Acid Slime path includes latent corrosive resistance. Full resistance requires evolution. Partial resistance may apply. Proceed with caution.]
Partial resistance. Caution. Two things Caelan was learning to balance. He pressed his membrane against the serpent's flank, near the tail where the venom damage was less severe, and began absorbing.
The burn was immediate but manageable—a tingling ache rather than the searing pain he'd expected. His membrane held. The biomass flowed in slowly, thickened by decay but still useful.
[Biomass acquired. 14 units.]
[Biomass threshold reached. Level increased: 5 → 6.]
[Evolution Progress: 47/100.]
He was halfway to evolution. The Acid Slime path waited. The Unknown path still lingered at the edge of his awareness, its fragments incomplete. He needed to decide soon.
A sound echoed through the ravine. Not a vibration—a voice. High and thin and wrong, like metal scraping stone. It came from deeper in the darkness, past the serpent's corpse, where the ravine narrowed into a tunnel barely wide enough for a kobold.
Caelan went still. The voice came again, and this time he caught a word. Not in the kobold tongue. Not in any language he'd absorbed.
Something lives down here, he realized. Something that talks.
He should leave. He had what he came for. His evolution path was unlocked, his biomass was climbing, and whatever killed the serpent was still out there. Every strategic instinct told him to retreat.
But the strategist was also curious. And curiosity, in this forest, was its own kind of hunger.
Caelan oozed toward the tunnel. Toward the voice.
Toward whatever waited in the dark.

Author's Note
One path unlocked, and a mystery unearthed. Something killed a venomous serpent. Something that left a wound that was still dissolving. And now, somewhere deeper in the ravine, something is speaking.
This is what I love about the Verdant Sea—every hunt reveals something stranger. The Acid Slime evolution is now available, but Caelan still has three other paths to consider. Which one will he choose? And what else lives in the ravine that the kobolds never knew about?
