Chapter 96: The Eighth Road

Darkness.

Not the darkness of night.

Not the darkness of the Seventh Gate.

A deeper silence settled over the forgotten city as every lantern—thousands upon thousands of them—lost their light at the same instant.

Only two flames remained.

The Lantern of Welcome.

And the white lantern Judge Aria had entrusted to Lucien.

Their twin lights stood against the endless dark like two stars refusing to disappear.

No one spoke.

No one dared.

Even the seven silver chains descending from the heavens had become motionless, wrapped tightly around the colossal stone hand protruding from the Seventh Gate.

The ancient voice echoed once more.

"So the sky still remembers."

The words were neither mocking nor grateful.

Merely curious.

Lucien looked up at the chains.

"What are they?"

The stranger answered quietly.

"They were never forged."

"They were promised."

Lucien frowned.

"Promised by whom?"

The stranger's gaze drifted far above the broken ceiling of the mountain, toward the strip of blue sky visible through the crack.

"By everyone."

Orion blinked.

"I'm beginning to suspect this world solves absolutely nothing in a normal way."

Despite everything, Tomorrow smiled.

"You're only beginning to suspect that?"

A faint chuckle escaped Caelum.

It lasted only a heartbeat.

Then another tremor shook the mountain.

This one was different.

It did not come from below.

It came from everywhere.

Lyra suddenly staggered.

Silver light burst from beneath her feet.

Roads spread across the stone floor once more.

Only this time...

There were no longer seven.

An eighth line had appeared.

It did not glow gold.

It did not shine silver.

It was transparent.

Almost invisible.

As though it existed only when someone stopped trying to look directly at it.

Lyra whispered in disbelief.

"It was always here..."

Serin's head snapped toward her.

"What did you say?"

"It isn't new."

She reached trembling fingers toward the transparent road.

"It was hidden."

The stranger slowly closed his eyes.

"So that is why..."

Caelum looked at him.

"You knew?"

"I suspected."

"But I prayed I was wrong."

Lucien stepped closer to the shimmering road.

"What is the Eighth Road?"

The stranger remained silent for so long that Lucien wondered if he intended to answer at all.

Finally, he spoke.

"It has many names."

"The Forgotten Path."

"The Empty Road."

"The Way Between."

He paused.

"But before any of those..."

"...it was called the Road Home."

The words settled over the companions like falling snow.

Road Home.

Lucien looked at the Lantern of Welcome.

Something inside him stirred.

Not a memory.

A longing.

A feeling he had carried all his life without ever understanding.

The desire to reach somewhere he had never seen.

Far beyond the Seventh Gate, the unseen being laughed softly.

"So..."

"You remembered that much."

The seven silver chains tightened.

The mountain groaned.

Hairline cracks spread across the enormous stone hand.

Not from weakness.

From resistance.

The being behind the gate was testing them.

Patiently.

Like someone checking whether an old lock still held.

The Hollow Sovereign suddenly stepped toward Lucien.

"This is where our paths divide."

Lucien looked up sharply.

"What do you mean?"

The Hollow Sovereign's expression remained calm.

"The Eighth Road cannot be walked by someone carrying my burden."

"No."

Lucien shook his head immediately.

"We're not separating."

"You misunderstand."

The Hollow Sovereign smiled.

"I am not leaving."

He slowly reached into his cloak.

From within, he withdrew a simple object wrapped in faded cloth.

He placed it in Lucien's hands.

It was an old lantern.

Smaller than the Lantern of Welcome.

Older than Judge Aria's.

Its metal was darkened by age.

Its glass cracked.

Its flame extinguished long ago.

Lucien looked at it in confusion.

"What is this?"

"My lantern."

"You carried one?"

"I always did."

Lucien stared at the dead flame.

"It doesn't work."

The Hollow Sovereign nodded.

"It stopped burning the day I chose vengeance over welcome."

Silence.

No one interrupted.

"I carried it anyway."

He looked toward the Seventh Gate.

"Hoping that one day..."

"...someone would remind it how to shine."

Lucien gently held the old lantern.

Without thinking, he lifted the Lantern of Welcome beside it.

The golden flame leaned sideways.

A single spark drifted across the empty space.

It landed upon the dead wick.

Nothing happened.

Then...

A tiny ember appeared.

Not gold.

Not silver.

A soft amber glow.

Weak.

Fragile.

Beautiful.

The Hollow Sovereign closed his eyes.

"I had forgotten..."

"...how warm it was."

For the first time since Lucien had met him, tears escaped the Hollow Sovereign's eyes.

No one commented.

Some moments deserved silence.

At that exact instant, the transparent Eighth Road brightened.

It stretched away from the city.

Not toward a kingdom.

Not toward the House With the Lantern.

Not toward any place marked on a map.

It disappeared into empty space itself.

The stranger stared at it in awe.

"It isn't leading somewhere."

Lucien followed the impossible road with his eyes.

"It's leading..."

"...to someone."

The silver ribbon around his wrist suddenly snapped taut.

It no longer pointed east.

It pointed along the Eighth Road.

Toward a destination beyond every known Road.

Then...

A child laughed.

The sound came from impossibly far away.

Warm.

Joyful.

Familiar.

Lucien froze.

He knew that laugh.

Not from this life.

Not from any memory he could grasp.

But from somewhere deep within his soul.

Caelum heard it too.

His face went pale.

"No..."

The stranger whispered,

"After all these years..."

Serin slowly fell to one knee.

"The Child of the First Flame..."

The ancient voice beyond the Seventh Gate became completely still.

When it finally spoke again...

Its tone had changed.

For the first time, there was uncertainty within it.

"Who..."

"...walks the Eighth Road?"

Before anyone could answer, a small figure appeared at the distant end of the transparent path.

Too far away to see clearly.

Only a silhouette.

A child carrying a tiny lantern.

The child raised one hand.

Not in warning.

Not in challenge.

In greeting.

Then the lantern in the child's hand ignited with a flame unlike any the world had ever seen.

Neither gold.

Nor silver.

Nor black.

It burned with the soft light of a dawn that had not yet arrived.
