Chapter 95: The One Before the Roads
The laughter ended as abruptly as it had begun.
Yet its echo remained.
Not in the air.
Inside every lantern.
Across the forgotten city, thousands of flames bent toward the Seventh Gate.
None were extinguished.
None dared burn brighter.
They simply leaned, as if paying respect to something older than fire itself.
Lucien could not look away from the massive stone hand gripping the edge of the broken gate.
It was impossibly large.
Each finger was thicker than an ancient oak, its surface carved with countless names layered upon one another. Time had erased almost all of them.
Only one remained untouched.
Origin.
The name seemed to exist outside language itself.
Lucien tried to repeat it silently.
The moment he did, a sharp pain pierced his mind.
The Lantern of Welcome flared.
The pain vanished.
The stranger immediately noticed.
"It protected you."
Lucien looked down at the tiny lantern.
"It knew that would happen."
"It always does."
Caelum slowly drew his sword, though he never pointed it toward the gate.
"Is Origin the creature behind the Seventh Gate?"
"No."
The answer came from the Hollow Sovereign.
Everyone turned toward him.
He continued quietly.
"Origin is not imprisoned."
His eyes remained fixed upon the stone hand.
"It is the prison."
Silence spread through the plaza.
Even the seven Judges remained perfectly still.
Orion blinked several times.
"I feel like every answer somehow becomes three new mysteries."
The stranger gave him a tired smile.
"That is often how truth behaves."
Another deep vibration rolled through the mountain.
The enormous stone fingers tightened.
Fragments of black rock broke away from the gate and crashed onto the ancient steps below.
One landed beside Lucien.
It was no ordinary stone.
Its surface reflected memories instead of light.
When Lucien looked into it, he saw a world without roads.
No villages.
No kingdoms.
Only endless wilderness stretching beneath unfamiliar stars.
People wandered alone.
Some carried torches.
Others carried nothing at all.
No one traveled together.
No one knew where home was.
The vision shifted.
A young traveler stood upon a lonely hill.
In his hands rested a crude wooden lantern.
Its carving was uneven.
Its handle slightly crooked.
Lucien immediately recognized it.
The first lantern.
Not the First Lantern of legend.
The very first lantern ever made.
The traveler lit it.
One tiny golden flame appeared.
A road of light unfolded across the wilderness.
Then another.
Then another.
People began following the light.
Families met.
Settlements formed.
Children laughed.
For the first time, strangers became neighbors.
The vision dissolved.
Lucien's breathing had become uneven.
"It wasn't built by kings."
The stranger nodded.
"No."
"It was built by someone who was lonely."
No one spoke.
The simplicity of that answer carried more weight than any grand legend.
Far below, the laughter returned.
This time it was softer.
Almost... approving.
The black-masked Judge lifted its lantern.
"It remembers."
The Hollow Sovereign frowned.
"No."
"It is waking."
Another crack split the Seventh Gate.
The opening widened just enough for darkness to pour through.
Not smoke.
Not shadow.
Darkness itself.
Where it passed, sound disappeared.
The footsteps of the companions vanished.
The crackling of the lanterns ceased.
Even breathing became silent.
Lucien instinctively raised the Lantern of Welcome.
Golden light spread around the group.
The silence stopped at its edge.
The stranger whispered,
"The Light still refuses to surrender."
The darkness pressed forward again.
Slowly.
Patiently.
Like a tide that had all the time in the world.
Then...
One of the seven Judges stepped forward.
The Judge bearing the white lantern.
Without a word, the masked figure placed the lantern upon the ground between the darkness and the companions.
The white flame brightened.
Cracks spread across the wooden mask.
Lucien watched in confusion.
"What is happening?"
Serin lowered his head.
"A Judge is making a choice."
The white flame suddenly exploded into brilliant light.
Not violently.
Beautifully.
The mask shattered.
For the first time, one of the Judges revealed a face.
An old woman.
Her silver hair flowed gently despite the still air.
She smiled at Lucien with unmistakable kindness.
"I have waited long enough."
Before anyone could react, she placed one hand upon the advancing darkness.
The white lantern emptied itself completely.
Its flame disappeared.
The darkness stopped.
Only for a heartbeat.
The old woman looked over her shoulder.
"Bearer."
Lucien stepped forward.
"Yes?"
She smiled.
"Do not fight to defeat the darkness."
"Then what should I fight for?"
Her eyes drifted toward the Lantern of Welcome.
"For the reason someone lights a lantern."
With those final words...
She dissolved into countless particles of white light.
The empty lantern fell gently onto the stone.
The first Judge was gone.
The remaining six lowered their heads.
The black-masked Judge spoke solemnly.
"Judge Aria..."
"...your watch has ended."
The white lantern remained on the ground.
Dark.
Empty.
Yet the darkness had halted.
Not because it had been overpowered.
Because someone had willingly taken its first step.
Lucien slowly picked up the abandoned white lantern.
It felt surprisingly warm.
The moment his fingers touched it...
The Lantern of Welcome released a single thread of golden flame.
It flowed into the empty white lantern.
A tiny light appeared inside.
Not white.
Gold.
The stranger's eyes widened.
"It accepted you."
Serin whispered in disbelief,
"No Bearer has ever carried two lanterns."
The Hollow Sovereign looked at Lucien with quiet understanding.
"Perhaps..."
"...there has never been one like him."
Before anyone could say another word...
A loud crack echoed across the forgotten city.
Not from the Seventh Gate.
From above.
Every person looked toward the cavern ceiling.
The mountain itself had split open.
Sunlight poured through the enormous fracture.
But something else descended with it.
Seven immense chains of silver light.
Each thicker than a castle tower.
They descended from the heavens and wrapped themselves around the stone hand emerging from the Seventh Gate.
The laughter stopped instantly.
For the first time...
A voice from beyond the gate spoke.
Calm.
Ancient.
Neither cruel nor kind.
Simply inevitable.
"So..."
"They have remembered the Chains."
The stone hand relaxed.
Not in surrender.
In anticipation.
Then the unseen being beyond the gate whispered one final sentence.
"Then let the Eighth Road awaken."
Across the city...
Every lantern went dark.
Except the two resting in Lucien's hands.
