Chapter 93: When the Last Light Faded
The golden lantern above the House With the Lantern had never gone dark.
Not through storms.
Not through winters that buried the valley beneath mountains of snow.
Not through the wars that had erased kingdoms from history.
Its flame had remained unchanged.
Until now.
---
Alden was sweeping the front steps when the light disappeared.
There was no explosion.
No sound.
The golden flame simply... ceased to exist.
For a long moment, he stared at the empty lantern.
His broom slipped from his fingers.
"No..."
The child who had been arranging smooth river stones beside the porch looked up.
"Uncle Alden?"
He didn't answer.
He climbed onto the porch with surprising speed and opened the lantern's small glass door.
The wick was still there.
The oil remained untouched.
Yet there was no fire.
No warmth.
Only cold.
The old journal hidden beneath the floorboards suddenly slammed shut.
By itself.
Alden froze.
Slowly, he lifted the loose wooden plank and pulled out the leather-bound book.
Its pages had always rewritten themselves whenever the First Lantern stirred.
Now...
Every page was blank.
Except one.
Across the center of a single sheet, new words slowly burned themselves into the paper.
The House Has Been Found.
Alden's face drained of color.
"No..."
"Not yet."
The child stepped closer.
"What happened?"
Alden closed the journal immediately.
"You must go inside."
"Why?"
"Now."
The seriousness in his voice left no room for argument.
The child nodded and hurried indoors.
Alden remained on the porch.
His eyes drifted toward the distant mountains.
Toward the forgotten city.
Toward Lucien.
He whispered the same prayer every Keeper had spoken for thousands of years.
"May the road remember you..."
---
Deep beneath the mountain...
The prayer reached Lucien.
He stopped walking.
The words had not entered through his ears.
They had appeared directly within his heart.
The Lantern of Welcome pulsed gently.
"Alden..."
Lucien whispered.
Caelum looked at him.
"You heard it too?"
Lucien nodded.
"The House."
Something was wrong.
He could feel it.
The warmth that had always connected him to the valley had become faint.
Unsteady.
As though a bridge had begun collapsing stone by stone.
The stranger closed his eyes.
"The Last House has been discovered."
Serin gripped his broom tightly.
"How?"
"It should have remained hidden."
The Hollow Sovereign answered before anyone else could.
"Nothing hidden remains hidden forever."
The black-masked Judge slowly lowered its lantern.
"The Balance has shifted."
The six remaining Judges remained perfectly still.
Only the black flame continued to grow.
---
Far below...
Beyond the Seventh Gate...
The enormous heartbeat ceased.
The silence that followed felt even heavier.
Lucien frowned.
"Why did it stop?"
"It didn't stop."
The stranger listened carefully.
"It stood up."
A chill swept through every person present.
Even Orion stopped breathing for a moment.
"You mean..."
"Yes."
"It is walking."
Another vibration rolled through the mountain.
This one had direction.
Not outward.
Upward.
Something impossibly large was climbing.
Not quickly.
Patiently.
As though it had waited so long that another few minutes meant nothing.
Lyra suddenly cried out.
Silver roads exploded around her.
This time they covered the entire city.
The glowing paths no longer ended at the Sanctuary.
They extended far beyond the mountain.
Across valleys.
Across rivers.
Across forgotten kingdoms.
Lucien watched in astonishment.
"They're connected..."
Serin nodded slowly.
"They always were."
The stranger quietly continued.
"The Roads were never built to guide travelers."
Everyone looked at him.
"They were built..."
"...to carry light."
Understanding dawned across Caelum's face.
"That's why every village has a lantern."
"Yes."
"They aren't symbols."
"No."
"They're anchors."
The stranger smiled sadly.
"The Houses With the Lantern are the knots holding the entire network together."
Lucien's grip tightened around the Lantern of Welcome.
"If one falls..."
"The Roads weaken."
"If all of them fall?"
The stranger did not answer.
He didn't need to.
Everyone already understood.
---
Without warning...
A tiny golden flame floating above Orion's shoulder flickered violently.
"So..."
He swallowed.
"I don't think that's supposed to happen."
The flame split.
Half remained golden.
The other half turned gray.
Tomorrow's flame did the same.
Then Astrael's.
Then Lyra's.
Only Lucien's Lantern of Welcome continued burning with unwavering light.
The black Judge watched quietly.
"The corruption has entered the Roads."
The Hollow Sovereign immediately stepped forward.
"No."
"It entered through memory."
Lucien turned sharply.
"What do you mean?"
The Hollow Sovereign looked directly into his eyes.
"It cannot destroy what is remembered."
"It only consumes..."
"...what has already been forgotten."
Those words struck Lucien harder than any weapon.
Forgotten.
That had always been the enemy.
Not darkness.
Not monsters.
Forgetting.
The stranger nodded approvingly.
"Now you begin to understand."
"The First Age did not end because we were defeated."
"It ended..."
"...because we stopped remembering one another."
Silence settled over the city.
No one could deny it.
Not after everything they had seen.
---
The black-masked Judge raised its lantern once more.
"The Trial begins."
The six other Judges stepped aside simultaneously.
The stairway below was now completely open.
Warm light poured upward.
Yet hidden within it were strands of black fire twisting like living serpents.
Lucien instinctively stepped forward.
Caelum caught his shoulder.
"You don't have to go alone."
Lucien smiled faintly.
"I know."
Before he could take another step...
The Lantern of Welcome suddenly floated from his hand.
It rose into the air above the plaza.
Every lantern in the forgotten city answered.
Thousands of golden flames bowed toward it.
Then...
The tiny lantern opened.
Not its door.
Its light.
A beam of pure gold shot into the sky above the city.
It pierced the mountain as though stone did not exist.
Far away...
In the valley...
The dark lantern above the House With the Lantern reignited.
Alden fell to his knees in relief.
But his relief lasted only a heartbeat.
Because the light revealed something standing at the edge of the valley.
Watching the House.
A lone traveler.
Wrapped in a tattered gray cloak.
Carrying no weapon.
Only a broken lantern.
The traveler slowly lifted his head.
Even from that impossible distance...
Alden could see the man's eyes.
They were completely black.
At the same instant beneath the mountain, the black-masked Judge spoke a single sentence.
"The First Seeker has arrived."
The stranger's calm composure finally shattered.
He whispered a name that none of the others had ever heard.
"...Erevan."
The Hollow Sovereign's expression turned grim.
"I thought he died before the First Age ended."
The stranger slowly shook his head.
"No."
"Worse."
"He remembered."
And far above, at the House With the Lantern...
The traveler took one slow step toward the front door.
The broken lantern in his hand suddenly ignited with black fire.
