Chapter 92: The Seventh Gate
The knock echoed a third time.
Not through the mountain.
Through everyone.
Lucien felt it behind his ribs.
Caelum instinctively stepped in front of him.
The Hollow Sovereign turned toward the darkness beneath the city, every trace of amusement gone from his face.
The seven masked Judges did not move.
Only their lanterns changed.
Each flame leaned toward the depths below, as though listening.
The black lantern burned without heat.
Without smoke.
Without mercy.
Serin slowly exhaled.
"It remembers the rhythm."
Lucien looked at him.
"What rhythm?"
"The one that ended the First Age."
Silence answered him.
No one wanted to explain.
No one wanted to remember.
The stranger finally stepped forward until he stood between Lucien and the seven Judges.
His voice remained calm.
"The Seventh Gate was sealed by seven Keepers."
The Judge carrying the white lantern inclined its head.
"It was."
"It cannot open."
"It is."
The answer was simple.
Undeniable.
The stranger closed his eyes.
"Then one of us failed."
"No."
The black-masked Judge spoke again.
"One of you chose."
Those words struck Caelum harder than anyone else.
His shoulders stiffened.
Lucien noticed immediately.
"You know what it means."
Caelum remained silent.
"Caelum."
Finally, his brother answered.
"When the Roads were broken..."
"We did not seal the Seventh Gate."
Lucien frowned.
"What?"
"We couldn't."
The Hollow Sovereign finished the sentence.
"So we built six seals around the seventh."
Orion blinked.
"That sounds less like solving a problem..."
"...and more like politely ignoring it."
Astrael gave a single nod.
"For once, he's correct."
The black Judge took one slow step upward.
Its lantern cast no shadow.
Instead, every shadow in the plaza quietly turned toward it.
"The time of waiting has ended."
The six remaining Judges raised their lanterns together.
White.
Blue.
Green.
Crimson.
Violet.
Silver.
Their flames intertwined above the stairway, forming a circular seal of living light.
Only the black flame remained separate.
Lucien felt the Lantern of Welcome pulse warmly in his hand.
The key of golden fire still floated above his palm.
It pulled gently toward the staircase.
Not toward the Judges.
Past them.
Deeper.
Serin noticed.
"It has chosen a path."
The stranger looked at Lucien.
"Not yet."
"It is asking."
Lucien frowned.
"Asking what?"
"If you wish to descend."
Before Lucien could answer, Lyra suddenly inhaled sharply.
Silver roads spread beneath her feet again.
Only this time...
They rose into the air.
Everyone watched as glowing paths unfolded across the city like rivers of light.
One road reached toward the Seventh Gate.
Six others wrapped around it.
Holding it.
Restraining it.
Lyra's voice trembled.
"They're breaking."
No one questioned how she knew.
They simply looked.
Hairline fractures spread across the six surrounding Roads.
Tiny.
Almost invisible.
But growing.
The Hollow Sovereign quietly whispered,
"It has begun consuming them."
Lucien looked at him.
"What has?"
"The Seventh Road."
Caelum immediately shook his head.
"No."
"The thing imprisoned behind it."
Another knock echoed.
This one louder.
Dust drifted from the ceiling beneath the mountain.
Several ancient lanterns flickered.
One went out.
Serin stared at it in disbelief.
"It has never..."
His voice faded.
"...gone dark before."
The city reacted.
Across the empty streets, thousands of lanterns brightened simultaneously.
Not in panic.
In response.
As though countless invisible hands had instinctively protected one another's light.
Lucien watched the golden glow spread from street to street.
The Lantern of Welcome grew brighter.
Then...
Something unexpected happened.
The tiny flame divided.
A second golden flame appeared beside the first.
Smaller.
Gentler.
It floated away from Lucien.
Straight toward Orion.
Orion pointed at himself.
"...Me?"
The flame settled above his shoulder.
Warm.
Harmless.
Then another left the lantern.
It drifted toward Astrael.
Then Tomorrow.
Then Cael.
Then Lyra.
Even Serin received one.
The final flame hovered before Caelum.
Only the Hollow Sovereign remained untouched.
Orion looked around in amazement.
"I've been promoted."
Astrael sighed.
"To what?"
"I don't know."
"But it feels important."
The stranger smiled.
"The Lantern of Welcome has accepted companions."
Lucien looked around.
"What does that mean?"
"It means..."
Serin's tired eyes softened.
"...you no longer walk the Roads alone."
The warmth of the golden flames spread through the group.
Fear remained.
But it no longer stood by itself.
The black Judge watched the scene in silence.
Then, for the first time, it turned its masked face toward the Hollow Sovereign.
"You remain outside the Light."
The Hollow Sovereign nodded.
"I know."
"You always have."
"I know."
"You may still enter."
The plaza became deathly still.
Caelum's eyes widened.
"No."
The Hollow Sovereign looked at Lucien.
For a long moment, neither spoke.
Then he smiled.
A genuine smile.
Small.
Almost peaceful.
"I wondered if they would offer."
Lucien stepped forward.
"Offer what?"
The Hollow Sovereign looked once more toward the Seventh Gate.
"Forgiveness."
No one had expected that answer.
Least of all Lucien.
The black Judge lowered its lantern.
"The choice remains yours."
The Hollow Sovereign closed his eyes.
"I..."
Before he could finish—
A deafening crack split the mountain.
Not below.
Above.
The entire city shook violently.
Every lantern flared.
The six glowing Roads visible through Lyra's vision fractured all at once.
Far beneath the Sanctuary, something enormous drew its first breath.
The sound rolled upward through stone, through streets, through the hearts of every person present.
The stranger looked toward the ceiling of the cavern.
His face lost all color.
"It isn't waiting for the Gate anymore."
Lucien tightened his grip on the Lantern of Welcome.
"What does that mean?"
The stranger answered in a whisper.
"It has found another way out."
At that exact moment, somewhere far away...
In the quiet valley where the House With the Lantern stood...
The golden lantern above the front door flickered once.
Then went out.
