Chapter 54 - 53: [I’ll Show You a Magic Trick]
After He Xiaotian and the old driver left the scene, a three-person squad drove up, arriving shortly after.
The vehicle was an odd-looking SUV with something resembling a large pot lid mounted on its roof.
"Captain, what happened here?" the young man in the passenger seat asked, staring dumbfounded at the folded BMW.
"..." ’You’re asking me? How the hell should I know?’ "The car’s positioning system wasn’t wrong. This is the newest Resentment Locking Device from the Energy Research Lab. Those guys might be a bunch of lunatics, but the gear they make is second to none."
"So, a fight already took place before we got here. But from the moment we detected it to our arrival... the whole thing took a minute at most, right?" The man in the passenger seat looked like he was having an existential crisis.
’Ending a fight in under a minute... Just what level of master are we dealing with?’
’The three of us combined would probably get rolled into a ball and beaten to a pulp.’
"That’s right." The captain nodded, his expression grave. The state of the BMW was just too wretched. Combined with the crater in the road, it was clear the fight had been completely one-sided. "Based on the residual resentment in the area, we can tell it was an evil spirit that died."
"Can we confirm if it was one of our own? Or was it some unaffiliated master who just happened to be passing by and dealt with it?" a woman asked from the back seat.
Hearing this, the captain shook his head and replied helplessly.
"There’s a major operation tonight. All the recruited masters in Shanghai have gathered around Pujiang. Department 037 found the creature that escaped from the Dragon-Locking Pillar, so there’s no way for us to confirm."
He paused for a moment. Then, with a sly grin, the captain pointed to a security camera over three hundred meters away.
"We might not be able to confirm it, but that doesn’t mean the cameras didn’t see him. Don’t forget, as the city’s Cleaners, we can pull up footage from any surveillance camera in Shanghai, anytime we want."
The other man and woman both rolled their eyes.
The three of them huddled together and began pulling up the footage.
On the tablet-sized screen, a man in a hoodie and a mask appeared. In each hand, he held a massive hammer covered in menacing, cold-looking spikes.
He stepped out of a Bentley reeking of sinister energy and walked up to the BMW.
Then, his body suddenly erupted in green flames. Without a word, he brought one of his hammers crashing down with a BOOM.
The scene was utterly brutal and violent.
In that single instant, the BMW was practically folded in half.
A blurry, blood-red shadow then shot out of the wrecked car.
The masked man immediately followed up, smashing down with his hammer again.
The ground caved in, creating a crater more than ten meters wide.
And the blood-red shadow was hammered into nothingness.
The masked man, however, simply turned around calmly, got back in the car, and drove away.
GULP!
The whole thing took less than thirty seconds. Two swings of a hammer, and he’d eliminated what looked to be a high-level evil spirit.
"Holy hell, this guy’s a beast! He can control fire and he’s super strong. Plus, it looks like his flames are devastatingly effective against evil spirits. Quick, Captain! Look him up! See which department he belongs to."
"Our squad isn’t even full, we’re short one person! We should poach him right now. Our future missions would go so much more smoothly. Besides, having a powerhouse like him on the team would be a huge boost to our safety."
The young man in the passenger seat was practically buzzing with excitement.
’This is a walking, talking powerhouse!!’
’If I don’t latch onto him now, when will I get another chance?’
"You think I don’t know that?" The captain deftly took a screenshot, entered their internal system, and ran a search. A moment later, four words appeared on the screen.
[NO SUCH PERSON FOUND]
"An unaffiliated master, then. No use thinking about it now. Once this business in Pujiang is over, we’ll report it and have Department 037 track him down. Once he’s found, they can try to recruit him." His voice was thick with disappointment.
「Meanwhile, He Xiaotian and the old driver had run into trouble.」
It wasn’t exactly trouble, just that the road home had been sealed off.
A group of men in traffic police uniforms had set up a cordon, with spike strips laid across the road.
The sharp-eyed He Xiaotian could even see the bulges at their waists.
Clearly, these "traffic cops" were armed.
"Chief, getting a reading. Something’s wrong with this car," one of the "cops" whispered, leaning close to his leader’s ear. He was holding an instrument identical to the one used by that slacking duo from Z County.
"Are the Jade Bullets chambered?"
"Yeah, seven rounds each. We loaded them all up this afternoon."
The man they called "Chief" nodded and commanded, "The second you see anything off, draw your weapons and fire. There’s a major situation over in Pujiang; we can’t afford any screw-ups here."
With his keen hearing, He Xiaotian naturally overheard their conversation.
He turned to the old driver and gave him a meaningful look.
"Sir, don’t look at me. Before I died, I was a law-abiding citizen. Besides, I’ve got you with me. Normally, when I run into a situation like this, I’d just go straight home. But you can’t exactly move into an urn, can you, sir?"
The old driver explained, on the verge of tears. ’This really isn’t my fault.’
"Alright," He Xiaotian said. "Just follow my lead."
He Xiaotian unbuckled his seatbelt, opened the car door, and stepped out.
"Sir, routine inspection," four of the "traffic cops" said as they approached, giving a crisp salute. "We suspect you may be hiding prohibited items in your vehicle. We need your cooperation."
"Of course. I have two boxes in the back. Need me to get them out for you?"
"..."
The men exchanged glances. It was the first time they’d encountered someone so cooperative.
"Go ahead,"
one of them said, while the others rested their right hands on their waists.
They were clearly ready to draw and fire at the slightest sign of trouble.
He Xiaotian gave a helpless shrug, opened the rear door, and pulled out the wooden crates containing his hammers, one by one.
"Watch closely, I’m about to do a magic trick."
"???"
’What the hell is he doing?’
As soon as the words left his mouth, he hoisted the crates onto his shoulders.
Then, he pushed off from the ground. Possessing the Eight Steps Chasing Cicada Qinggong, He Xiaotian’s explosive power was immense.
Bending his knees, he shot forward like a bolt of lightning.
Before the "traffic cops" could even draw their guns, he had vanished into the darkness.
The old driver: ’What?!’
’That’s what you meant by "follow my lead"?!’
’You heartless son of a bitch!’
’And here I’ve been driving you around for free these past few days, only for you to ditch me at the critical moment!’
’Wait a second... if the sir is gone, doesn’t that mean I can just drive straight back to my urn?’
Just then, the "traffic cops" turned their attention to the Bentley.
WHOOSH!
Before they could make a move, the old driver slammed on the gas and vanished.
"SON OF A BITCH!"
The two of them escaping one after the other sent the "traffic cops’" Chief into a thunderous rage.
"Chief, another car’s coming."
"Draw your weapons! Aim! The instant you see anything even slightly out of line, you shoot!"
