Chapter 52 - 51: Securing a Cannon Minion (Part 1)
He Xiaotian tucked the blood pearl into his pocket, walked to the bathroom door, and pulled his sledgehammer out of the floor.
"Hm? Why is it a little hot?"
Ever since he started cultivating the Fire-refined Golden Body, the sensation of heat had become a foreign concept to him, aside from the moments he leveled up.
Now, it felt as if molten magma, not blood, was flowing through his veins.
The scalding sensation made him want to cry out.
Of course, don’t get the wrong idea. It wasn’t a pleasant feeling.
"Don’t tell me I’m suffering from cultivation deviation?" He Xiaotian muttered to himself. All sorts of wuxia novels and TV shows had plots like this. Although he didn’t actually know what "cultivation deviation" really meant, that didn’t stop him from considering the possibility.
CREAK!
The security door was opened from the outside, and two heads poked in.
One had yellow hair, the other green.
It was none other than Huang Tao and Li Zheng.
When these two received Sister Nan’s call, they were filled with grief and despair.
’Sister Nan, are you kidding me?’
’Sending us to a haunted house in the middle of the night!’
’We know an expert is here, but we’re still scared!’
They had originally planned to bring a few friends along for moral support.
But as soon as they heard it was Apartment 302 at the Tuanjie Community on Haining Road, everyone hung up.
They tried calling again?
"Sorry, the number you have dialed is switched off."
The two had no choice but to bite the bullet and go alone.
But as soon as they poked their heads in to take a look, they saw the trashed living room.
"Did we come to the wrong place?"
Li Zheng asked, confused.
SMACK!
"Are you stupid? Don’t tell me you brought the wrong key too?"
"Come in," He Xiaotian said, having heard their conversation.
Hearing his voice, the two of them immediately breathed a sigh of relief.
As long as He Xiaotian, the man who dared to ride the Ghost Car, was alive, everything would be fine.
"Expert, is it taken care of?"
"Yeah."
He Xiaotian nodded. He didn’t bother to explain that the entity occupying Apartment 302 wasn’t a vengeful ghost or evil spirit, but a rather eccentric person.
"By the way, a murder took place in this apartment. The victim was Zheng Qi, a third-tier celebrity who went missing a while ago. The murderer is his agent, Ah Zhe, and the accomplice is Zheng Qi’s secret girlfriend.
"Your families are pretty well-connected. Figure out a way to report this to the police tomorrow. There should still be some clues left in the room. Consider it a good deed. And it’s best if you don’t involve me."
Huang Tao and Li Zheng grimaced.
’You make it sound so easy.’
’As if our families can really pull strings everywhere.’
"Expert, here’s the fifty million."
Although the task was a bit difficult, it wasn’t impossible.
The two were thrilled that He Xiaotian had taken care of the "thing" in the haunted house, so they paid him readily.
As for checking his work?
Don’t be ridiculous. They were just a couple of rich kids, not Daoists or Monks. How were they supposed to check?
"Let’s go."
He Xiaotian packed the two sledgehammers into his wooden box, pushed it out of the room, then shouldered it and left.
"Expert, do you need a ride?"
"No need, I have a ride. If you have nothing to do at night, don’t wander around. I hear it’s not very safe in Shanghai after dark."
Hearing He Xiaotian’s warning, Huang Tao and Li Zheng rolled their eyes.
’You’re one to talk about it not being safe!’
’And you still made us come here in the middle of the night!’
Then, they saw He Xiaotian pull a piece of Netherworld Currency from his coat, light it on fire, and toss it to the ground.
"What are you...?"
The two were completely baffled.
’Burning Netherworld Currency in the middle of the night? What kind of move is this?’
BEEP BEEP BEEP!!
Five minutes later, a Bentley driving over from the distance gave them their answer.
GULP!
The two of them grabbed each other’s shoulders and swallowed hard in unison.
They hadn’t seen He Xiaotian take out his phone at all since they’d come downstairs.
All he did was light a piece of Netherworld Currency.
"Sir, get in!"
The old driver stuck his head out the window, his pale face grinning at the three of them.
Huang Tao and his friend felt their teeth start to chatter, and their legs were shaking uncontrollably.
’Holy shit!’
’And he said this wasn’t a Ghost Car?’
’All that bullshit about the latest stealth technology was a lie!!’
"Memorize this phone number. If you need anything in the future, you can call the old driver first. He’ll contact me. Of course, the price won’t be cheap."
He Xiaotian shoved his box into the Bentley’s back seat, then turned to the two rich kids who looked like they were about to piss themselves from fear. He handed them a slip of paper with a phone number on it.
"D-d-don’t... worry... I-i-if... we... n-need anything... w-w-we’ll... d-definitely call..."
BEEP BEEP!!
After two honks, the Bentley drove off into the darkness.
"Brother Tao, I’m scared," Li Zheng whimpered softly.
Huang Tao: "..."
’I’m scared too!!’
’And can you please not cling to me like this? You’re a man, not some helpless damsel.’
Meanwhile, in the Bentley.
He Xiaotian took out a burner phone, the kind that was no longer in production.
"From now on, if anyone is looking for me, call me immediately."
The old driver took the phone, then said with an obsequious smile, "Sir, if it’s not too much trouble, could you maybe summon me a little less often recently?"
"Why?" Instead of rejecting him outright, He Xiaotian asked a question in return.
After all, he was a human with a conscience, not some "He the Skinner."
"Sigh! It’s all because of the vengeful ghost, Hong Yi. She’s been getting worse and worse these days. Any woman wearing or carrying anything red is her target. The ride-hailing business is in shambles.
"Nowadays, anyone getting off work at night travels in large groups. The taxi industry has plummeted! My income has been slashed, to say nothing of my own business. I can’t get any fares, so I can’t absorb any vital energy. I can only live off my old savings.
"So I was planning to take a break for a while, wait for this whole thing to blow over. Or until someone deals with her and business starts to pick up again," the old driver said, a blubbering mess, his face full of bitterness.
These days, it’s not easy being a ghost either.
If he didn’t have an urn to house his spirit, he would have long since been scattered to the winds.
"Hong Yi? The one that drains all the blood from her victims?"
"That’s her. Now, no woman in all of Shanghai dares to wear red. Quite a few people have died. No one’s willing to test their luck anymore."
While the two were talking, a BMW passed them, going in the opposite direction.
Out of the corner of his eye, He Xiaotian vaguely saw a red figure in the back seat.
The man driving and the woman in the passenger seat were chatting happily.
He even realized that he recognized the two of them.
The man was named Ah Zhe, an agent.
The woman... her ex-boyfriend was named Zheng Qi.
"Stop the car."
SCREECH!
"Sir, what’s wrong?"
"Follow that car. I never thought I’d run into this modern-day Pan Jinlian and Ximen Qing."
The old driver immediately made a U-turn and began tailing the BMW from a distance.
Don’t get the wrong idea; He Xiaotian had no intention of saving anyone.
He just wanted to see how these two would die.
And while he was at it, he could score a kill and earn some Experience Points.
Taking the blood pearl from his pocket, He Xiaotian said, "I may have been the one who killed you, but letting your only remaining relic watch your enemies get killed by an evil spirit... I guess that counts as indirectly avenging you, right?"
Zheng Qi was a pitiful man, but also a detestable one.
No matter how you tried to argue it, three people had died by his hands.
Murder is an unforgivable sin.
Especially when innocent people were involved.
