Chapter 145: Undead Therizon.
The Therizon’s flesh was rendered and cut apart by the raging tornado, countless wind blades tearing through its enormous body as the creature struggled helplessly against the storm.
Its white feathers were shredded from its body, and chunks of flesh were carved away with every rotation of the tornado. Damien was genuinely awed by the power of the undead Lich’s spell.
He had expected the Lich to have some useful abilities, but he hadn’t expected this. The thing had been acting like a lazy bum ever since Damien brought it back to life, yet it had just unleashed a spell powerful enough to tear apart a creature that had given both him and Andrea so much trouble.
The tornado didn’t last for long.
After some time, the raging winds began to weaken, the countless blades gradually disappearing until the storm finally died down. Snow and pieces of the Therizon’s flesh fell back to the ground, leaving the underground cavern strangely quiet after the violent assault.
The Therizon was no longer moving.
Half of its neck had been cut open by a wind blade, leaving its massive body completely lifeless. Blood and pieces of flesh covered the snow around it, while its enormous wings lay motionless against the ground.
The undead Lich’s body became dark and dull as the runes covering its bones lost their luster. Whatever power it had used to unleash that tornado seemed to have finally run its course.
"If this is your limit, then it’s not bad, not bad at all."
Damien yanked his Vestige and dispelled it, then did the same for all his undead. One after another, the remaining undead disappeared, and even the dark miasma that had been covering the battlefield began rushing back into his body.
The oppressive presence surrounding the Therizon vanished with it.
Damien placed his palm against its body, this was his first time attempting to bring back a creature beyond his rank.
He had raised plenty of corpses before, but this was different. The Therizon was an Awakened creature, while Damien was still only Dormant. The difference between their ranks wasn’t something he could simply ignore, and there was no guarantee that his ability would even work.
Then again, he had already managed to raise the undead Lich.
Although, to be fair, Damien wasn’t even sure what rank the undead Lich had in the first place. Its bones had been lying in that camp for God knows how long, covered in strange runes and somehow retaining enough of its former existence to become something far stranger than his normal undead.
The Therizon was different.
This was an actual living creature that he had personally killed, and now he was going to find out whether his ability could force it to rise despite the difference in their ranks.
Damien’s fingers pressed slightly against its cold flesh.
"Rise."
Andrea instinctively wrapped her arms around herself as a cold dread began to spread through the area. Damien, however, was completely focused on the Therizon. Ever since he first saw the creature, he had wanted its power for himself. The power of its curses, its devastating sound, and especially its ability to manipulate space.
With that power, he could finally keep up with space masters like Ryan and Ethan, especially Claire, who could practically assassinate anyone before they even realized they were in danger.
The Therizon’s massive body gradually began to change.
Its once-white feathers started turning pitch black, the colour spreading across its enormous body until not a trace of its original appearance remained. Then soft black mist began emitting from beneath it, curling around its body and spilling across the ground.
Damien studied it closely. Then the massive corpse suddenly began to rise from the ground.
The sudden movement forced Damien off its back, and he stumbled away as the Therizon continued rising. Its enormous body lifted higher and higher until it was standing once again, its massive wings spreading outward in an imposing display that made Damien’s eyes light up.
Then a soul-crushing screech shook the ground.
"He actually did it," Andrea muttered.
Damien barely heard her. His attention was completely fixed on the resurrected Therizon. But then something strange happened, the Therizon’s body began to shrink.
Damien’s expression slowly changed.
The massive creature became smaller and smaller, its enormous body rapidly losing its size until it was barely recognizable compared to the terrifying beast that had nearly killed them. Damien could only stand there and watch as the Therizon continued shrinking without showing any sign of stopping.
Eventually, it stopped.
Damien stared blankly at it. The Therizon was now no bigger than the undead priest, for several agonising seconds, Damien said nothing, he was struggling to hold back all the curses piling up in his mouth.
"What the hell is this? Where’s my imposing Therizon? I can’t intimidate anyone with this!"
Damien yelled at the top of his throat, staring at his newly resurrected undead with disbelief.
He had already imagined himself running amok with a giant Awakened-rank undead at his side. Something massive enough to terrify anyone who saw it coming, something that could tear through enemies while he stood atop it looking impressive.
Instead, he got a little horse. Even a horse would have been better. At least he could look cool while riding it. But there was no way riding a giant chicken was ever going to seem imposing.
"It’s probably because your rank is too low," Andrea said as she approached.
"What bloody rank?" Damien cursed. "Why bother even coming back if you’re going to turn into a chicken?"
Damien kicked the undead Therizon, but it didn’t react at all. It simply stood there, completely indifferent to Damien’s frustration.
Andrea felt helpless. She didn’t know how to console Damien. They had both worked hard to kill the Therizon, and after everything they had gone through, Damien had finally managed to raise it as one of his undead. She could understand why he had been expecting something more impressive.
"You know, just because it’s smaller now, doesn’t mean it’s any weaker. Perhaps this is for the best."
Damien turned his head and looked dead straight at her. "How can riding a big chicken be the best I can get out of this?"
Damien sighed deeply, his shoulders dropping as he looked at the undead Therizon again. All that effort, all that fighting, and this was what he had to show for it.
"Let me wallow in my pain."
Andrea shook her head and retrieved a little glowing orb from her belongings. It was a beacon.
"If you’re done, can we please get out of this icy death realm?"
Damien was still sprawled on the ground beside his undead Therizon, his eyes teary as he continued muttering to himself. He looked genuinely devastated by the outcome, as though the Therizon’s reduced size had somehow been a greater tragedy than everything they had endured to kill it.
Andrea rolled her eyes and knelt beside him. There wasn’t much she could do about Damien’s current state, so she simply held his hand and activated the beacon.
A soft glow immediately spread around them.
Their bodies suddenly began to fade, becoming increasingly transparent until they vanished from the space completely. The undead Therizon was connected to Damien’s soul, so it disappeared alongside them, leaving the icy battlefield completely empty.
...
Jackson was leading the survivors as they travelled through an underground passage, his armour still pristine despite everything they had already been through. His black hair flowed behind him with the wind rushing through the tunnel, while his perfectly handsome face was slightly pale. His bloodied blade remained pointed toward the hundreds of frost-bats ahead, the creatures crowding the passage and filling the darkness with their screeches.
He wasn’t alone. He was surrounded by allies, including Ryan, Seris, Rex, Micah, and many more humans who had managed to survive this far.
There were simply too many of them frost-bats, their bodies packed together so tightly that the passage ahead seemed almost completely filled by their pale wings.
"Hold up, I got this." Rex said before jumping forward and raising both hands.
The moment his ability activated, a massive boundary rose from the ground, spreading across the passage and separating them from the frost-bats. The creatures immediately slammed against the barrier from the other side, their bodies colliding with it as their screeches echoed through the underground passage.
Jackson’s expression remained grim as he watched the sheer number of creatures gathering beyond the boundary. Even with Rex holding them back, there was no guarantee the barrier would last.
"They’re too many of them, we should pull back." Jackson said quietly.
Seris glanced back, and her expression immediately changed.
Those same creatures were blocking their exit.
More frost-bats crowded the passage behind them, leaving the survivors trapped between the two swarms. The narrow underground passage offered nowhere else to go, and the sound of their wings filled the darkness from both directions.
"There’s nowhere to run to, we just have to hold our ground."
