Chapter 251: Mana Heart Reinforcement Spell
Before, if he had Strength (5), that stat might have allowed him to produce five units of physical force. Now, the same Strength (5) could produce 7.5 units of force, which was the real power of becoming a Mid rank Species.
However, there was another side to it.
Alex had already been barely controlling his enormous mana pool with his previous level of mana control. After the evolution, the amount of mana inside his body had increased while his control had only improved by a limited amount, causing the gap between his mana pool and mana control to become much larger.
Despite the dangerous situation, Alex didn’t regret his decision. He had put almost every stat point he had gained into Mana because of the enormous benefits it provided, and that decision had allowed him to fight powerful monsters directly while using his spells repeatedly without constantly waiting for his mana to recover.
The Wild Orcs were only one example. If Alex hadn’t invested so heavily into Mana, there were many battles where he would have been forced to retreat simply because he couldn’t maintain his spells for long enough.
’I’ve already decided.’
’And I will not regret my decision.’
Alex clenched his teeth as he continued controlling the mana inside his body. He would continue investing everything into Mana, and even if the decision eventually created problems for him, he wasn’t going to abandon it because of fear.
He simply needed to become better at controlling his mana so that he could handle the enormous amount stored inside his body. Instead of regretting his choices, Alex would make sure he never allowed himself to be caught in such a dangerous situation again.
Alex took several deep breaths before sitting cross-legged on the ground. He continued using his spells while slowly pulling mana out of his Mana Heart because he needed to reduce the amount inside it before the pressure became dangerous again.
At the same time, Alex began studying his Mana Heart. He carefully circulated mana around it and observed its structure, trying to understand how he could reinforce it without damaging the organ.
’If I can create a Mana Heart Reinforcement Spell, this problem will become much easier to handle.’
It was time he finally learned the spell.
...
Kevin sat on the rooftop beneath the shade of a large solar panel while practicing the spells Alex had taught him. His sister had already gone to the Land of Origin, leaving him alone at the base for the time being, and although he wanted to join the search party looking for their parents, he couldn’t leave because someone needed to remain behind and defend the base.
Kevin stopped practicing for a moment and sighed as he looked toward the sky. The giant blue cross hanging above the city pulsed rhythmically, and its glow had become noticeably stronger ever since the Integration rate had increased.
According to the information people had gathered on Dwitter, the portal was becoming more dangerous as the Integration progressed. Unless the humans connected this portal to another one, there was a chance that monsters could eventually hijack it and use it to enter Earth.
Normal monster species like Wild Orcs would need to take control of the portal from Earth’s side before connecting it to a portal on their home world. However, powerful monsters could apparently access a portal from the other side and enter Earth directly, just like the monster that had destroyed Washington.
Kevin didn’t know how powerful a monster needed to be to accomplish something like that, but the thought alone was enough to make him uncomfortable. He looked at the blue portal for another moment before returning his attention to the spells in front of him.
"Hey, want some snacks?" Sophia asked as she walked toward him with a small bag in her hands.
Kevin looked behind him and accepted the snacks with a smile. Sophia sat beside him, and the two began eating while looking over the rooftop.
Kevin noticed that she seemed exhausted, which wasn’t surprising considering how much time she had spent healing injured people since the monsters started appearing after the Assessment. However, Sophia didn’t seem interested in resting because she began furiously typing on her phone.
"What are you doing?" Kevin asked after watching her for a while.
"They’re trolling Alex’s name online, so I’m fighting them. These people are seriously annoying me, so let me use the bots to fight them," Sophia replied without looking up from her phone.
Kevin stared at her for a moment before smiling. Even in this destroyed world, Sophia remained the same, and while she was usually reserved and quiet, she somehow became a completely different person whenever she went online.
"What are they saying about Alex?" Kevin asked as he leaned closer to look at her phone.
"They’re saying that Alex isn’t actually that strong," Sophia said while continuing to type. Her lips puckered slightly as she stared at the screen, clearly annoyed by what she was reading.
Kevin looked at the comments with a confused expression. He genuinely couldn’t understand how anyone could think Alex was weak because, as far as Kevin had seen and heard, Alex was astonishingly strong even compared to other Ascendants.
Kevin wanted to ask Sophia why so many people were saying that, but she was too focused on arguing with people online to properly explain it. After a few attempts, Kevin eventually gave up and pulled out his own phone.
He opened Dwitter and began searching through the latest posts while slowly finishing his food. He also stopped practicing his spells because he wanted to rest, and unlike Alex, he couldn’t practice while simultaneously doing several other things.
Kevin still didn’t understand how Alex could cast so many spells while fighting. He had spoken with several Mages since the apocalypse began, and the highest number of spells he had heard someone use simultaneously was three, with even that person struggling to move while maintaining them.
Alex, on the other hand, could fight while controlling multiple spells at the same time, and Kevin had personally seen him use complicated combinations without losing focus. The difference was so large that Kevin had stopped trying to understand it.
