Chapter 74: Can never be mine
"Your Highness, I appreciate you accompanying me home," Venus began the conversation. "I hope I haven’t caused you trouble," she added softly, briefly lowering her gaze.
"I did it because my sister-in-law, Alora, would be upset. I can’t bear to see her distressed," Izaak explained to her.
Venus lifted her head to meet his gaze. "Alora has impressed everyone in the palace, won everyone’s heart there," she said, "while I couldn’t do well in my marriage."
"It was you, who on your wedding day refused to listen to Alora’s advice," Izaak remarked, his tone tinged with a hint of taunt. "You believed that if your older sister married a supernatural being, you should do the same. You are the reason for your own downfall."
"I regret that decision, Your Highness," Venus admitted softly, her voice filled with remorse.
"Do you truly regret it? I have my doubts. In fact, both Magnus and I suspect that you are quite skilled at acting. Who’s to say you don’t still harbor intentions to harm Alora through your dangerous schemes?" Izaak’s harsh words pierced Venus’s heart, bringing tears to her eyes.
"I admit that what I did to my elder sister was wrong. I’ve always resented her for not getting anything in my life. While she obtained the best, I ended up with the worst," Venus confessed.
Izaak chuckled at her response. "Why does it seem like you’re still jealous of Alora?" he questioned, his gaze penetrating.
Venus met his intense stare but remained silent.
