Chapter 31 – Witness Weight
The carrier frame reached the square drop before Nia could unfold the summons.
The paper knocked again in her hand.
Not loud. Not even sharp.
It hit her fingers from the inside, as if something folded into the page had tried to tap bone.
Nia almost dropped it.
Kai could not reach her. The carrier frame had already carried his chest over the metal rim. There was no stair below him. No lift cage. No ladder. Just a black shaft with red guide rails running down the sides until the light gave up.
The sign above the opening stayed bright.
PLATFORM 0 ACCESS
Witness weight required
"It wants the summons," Kai said.
"It wants a lot of things."
The front wheels went over empty air.
Nia grabbed the back of the frame with both hands and planted her boots against the floor. Her heel slid. The lunch box banged against her ribs. The damaged E key scraped the rim and made a thin metal sound.
Kai's bad foot lifted off the floor with the frame.
His stomach pressed into the carrier rail. His marked right hand lay trapped against the side grip, fingers numb except for the cold rectangle in his palm. The first meridian under his skin tightened. It did not give him strength. It made the pull feel heavier.
The access shaft was pulling on the mark in his palm instead of the frame.
Nia swore under her breath and hooked one arm around the rear bar. "I can't hold this."
"The paper."
"If I put it down and it takes my hand?"
"Then don't put your hand down."
She shot him a look that would have had more force if she were not losing the frame by inches.
The audit summons knocked again.
The square rim opened a small tray from its left side. It was no wider than a lunch plate, made of dull steel, with a black pad set into the middle. The pad had no label until the summons knocked a fourth time.
PLACE WITNESS
Nia's face went tight.
"Mateo is not a thing I can place."
The frame lurched.
Kai's chest hit the rail hard enough to empty his lungs.
The tray waited.
Nia slapped the folded summons onto the black pad and pulled her fingers away fast.
The tray sank.
For one second, the red sign dimmed.
Then the tray rose again.
WITNESS RECORD HAS NO WEIGHT
Carrier dispute may bear witness
"No," Nia said.
The front half of the carrier frame tipped farther over the shaft.
Kai's right palm went colder. The rectangle burned without heat, matching the shape of the pad on the tray.
He understood, which did not make it better.
"Nia."
"No."
"It is not asking for my name."
"It never asks cleanly."
"It is asking for the part that touched the cage."
Her grip tightened on the frame. "That is still you."
The rear wheels slipped.
Kai forced his right wrist down. The carrier rail fought him. The frame wanted his whole body to go first. His left hand lifted by itself toward the lunch box, fingers crooked and useless.
Nia pinned the lid with her elbow and leaned with everything she had.
Kai dragged his numb hand across the side grip until the cold rectangle in his palm lined up with the tray.
It should not have hurt.
It did.
The moment his palm touched the summons, the knock stopped.
His hand stuck to the paper.
WITNESS WEIGHT ACCEPTED
Carrier dispute bearing witness
The tray dropped out of sight.
So did the floor.
The carrier frame fell.
Nia had one breath to move. She jumped onto the narrow side strip as the shaft caught the frame in red rails. The drop became a controlled slide, but only after Kai's body had already decided it was falling.
The rails screamed around the wheels.
Nia hit the side platform on one knee. The lunch box slammed against the carrier frame and clicked open a finger's width.
Kai's left hand turned toward it.
"Don't," Nia snapped.
She shoved the lid shut with the heel of her hand.
The box clicked twice, unhappy with her.
They went down.
The shaft walls were concrete at first. Then tile. Then glass. Behind the glass, dark rooms passed by in thin slices. Empty child-height benches. Hooks with no coats. A counter with three chairs bolted to the floor. A row of numbered cubbies, each one sealed with white tape.
No blue prompts followed them.
Only red station text, waking and dying as they passed.
UNCLAIMED ROUTE REVIEW
DEPENDENT HOLD MATERIAL
NO CONDITION WINDOW
CARRIER DISPUTE REQUIRED
Nia's eyes jumped from line to line. Her mouth tightened after each one.
"It keeps saying material," she said.
"I know."
"Not children. Material."
He had no softer word for it.
The rails slowed.
The shaft opened into a wide underground room that did not look like a train platform.
It looked like a hearing room with no place meant for comfort.
There was a long counter on the far wall. Five windows. Five metal shutters. Only the middle one was open. Above it, white letters glowed behind dirty glass.
PLATFORM 0
UNCLAIMED CHILD AUDIT
Route evidence only
Condition review not available
False relation assigns carrier
Insufficient witness assigns collector
The carrier frame rolled off the shaft track and locked into a floor groove in front of the middle window.
Nia stepped down from the side strip, favoring the knee she had landed on.
She still had the summons.
Or part of it.
The folded paper had thinned where Kai's palm had touched it. A gray rectangle showed through the page like a dead phone screen.
Nia looked at Kai's hand.
The cold mark remained in his skin.
"Can you feel it?"
"No."
"With you, that usually means yes."
"It means no."
"Your face says otherwise."
He did not answer.
The first meridian in his forearm had gone quiet, but not settled. It sat under the skin like a tight wire. If he breathed too deeply, the cold rectangle in his palm seemed to breathe with him.
Nia moved toward the counter.
Kai's carrier frame did not move.
The floor groove held it in place.
A small gate stood to the right of the window. It had a slot with a faded letter E above it.
Nia saw it at the same time Kai did.
"No," Kai said.
She was already taking out the key.
"I'm not opening it. I'm testing it."
"That is what opening looks like before it goes badly."
"Then watch faster."
The E key went into the slot.
It did not fit.
Not because the lock was wrong.
Because the key was.
The missing tooth left a gap the slot seemed to notice. The bent shaft caught halfway in and refused to turn. Nia tried once, carefully, then stopped before she had to put strength behind it.
The wall woke beside her hand.
DEPENDENT KEY DEGRADED
Route authority reduced
Audit access only
The gate opened two inches.
Behind it was another counter.
Another window.
Another closed shutter.
Then the gate shut hard enough to push the key back into Nia's palm.
She stared at it.
The key had a new scrape along one side.
"It opened this route," Kai said quietly.
"And now it opens almost nothing."
"Almost is enough for this place to hurt people."
"Then use it carefully."
The middle audit window clicked.
A drawer slid out from below the glass. It held a flat metal scale with three shallow dishes stamped into it.
CARRIER DISPUTE
WITNESS
SUBJECT
The carrier dish was already red.
Kai did not like that.
Nia placed the summons in the witness dish.
The gray rectangle inside the paper flickered.
For a moment, the paper was not paper.
It became a cracked phone screen.
Not the phone itself. Not exactly. A record of one.
The image shook. Low angle. Concrete floor. A man's breath too close to the microphone. A delivery sleeve, dark with water. A hand trying to hold the phone steady and failing.
Mateo's name patch filled the edge of the image.
MATEO R-
Then the phone turned.
A line of small sealed carriers moved past the camera behind a mesh wall. Not children. Not visible bodies. Boxes, coats, route tags, lunch bags, wristbands, all sealed into narrow metal trays. One tray had a yellow button with a cartoon sun pressed against the glass.
Nia stopped breathing.
The image blurred before the tray could show more.
Mateo's voice did not speak.
The record did not give him that much back.
White text crawled across the phone image.
SIGHTING ACCEPTED
Observed article: E.C. dependent route material
Movement observed: Bay 3 to Platform 0 audit intake
Condition: sealed
Witness condition: irrelevant
Nia put one hand on the counter.
Kai watched her knuckles go pale.
"That was her button."
"It was a button."
"It was the button."
"Nia."
She turned on him. "Do not."
He shut his mouth.
The audit window saved him from needing the right words.
The subject dish on the scale lit white.
SUBJECT NAME REQUIRED FOR REVIEW
Nia's hand moved toward the summons before she seemed to know it had moved.
Kai hit the carrier rail with his numb hand.
It made almost no sound, but it hurt enough to pull her eyes back.
"No names," he said.
"It already knows E.C."
"It knows enough to make you finish it."
"If this is Elise--"
"Then writing her name here gives the audit a handle."
"You do not know that."
"Neither do you."
That landed badly.
He saw it land and could not take it back.
Nia looked through the audit glass at the sealed trays beyond the phone image. The yellow button had vanished into blur. Her jaw locked. Her eyes stayed dry by force.
"I am not leaving her as material," she said.
"Then ask for route, not condition."
"It says no condition review."
"Then use that. It admitted condition review is closed."
The middle shutter moved.
Something behind the glass stamped once.
The summons jumped in the witness dish.
REVIEW OPTIONS
1. Confirm subject name
2. Assign relation
3. Petition route access
4. Release condition inquiry
The fourth line was gray.
Nia stared at it anyway.
The lunch box clicked.
Kai's left hand lifted.
This time Nia did not look down. She caught the lid with her wrist and kept her eyes on the options.
"Route access," Kai said.
"I can read."
"I know."
"Then stop sounding like you think I cannot."
"I think you want the line that hurts most."
"Of course I do."
She jabbed the summons against the third line.
The gray phone rectangle went black.
The audit counter hummed.
The subject dish stayed empty.
The carrier dish under Kai glowed redder.
PETITION TYPE: ROUTE ACCESS
Subject name incomplete
Relation unassigned
Witness weight partial
Carrier dispute present
Nia leaned closer. "Partial?"
Mateo's dead phone knocked inside the paper.
The sound was weaker now.
The audit did not care.
FIRST WITNESS ACCEPTED
Second witness required
The red rails behind Kai tightened.
Something moved in the shaft above them.
Nia looked up.
The ceiling was too dark to show the path they had come from.
Kai felt the movement before he heard it. Not through his ears. Through the cold rectangle in his palm and the pulled thread of the first meridian, as if the route were pulling the collector toward the mark in his hand.
"Nia," he said.
She had already seen the next line.
SECOND WITNESS SOURCE
Nearest authorized collector
"No," she said.
The audit window stamped again.
SUMMONING TESTIMONY
The red rails in the shaft clicked one by one, higher and higher.
The shaft was building a path for something above them.
Nia grabbed the E key.
Kai shook his head.
"It will not open."
"Then what does?"
He looked at the three dishes.
Carrier. Witness. Subject.
The subject dish waited, clean and empty.
Too clean.
"Not that," he said.
"I know."
The shaft above them answered with a voice they both recognized.
Derek Mallon, calm and close.
"I can testify."
The middle audit window printed one final line.
