Chapter 30 – Witness Route
The carrier frame turned before Nia could stop it.
The rear wheels unlocked first. The front wheels stayed caught in the side groove. Metal ground against metal under Kai's feet, and the whole frame swung right, slow and heavy, until it faced the red rails the collector had laid along the booth wall.
Nia grabbed the waist rail.
"No," she said again.
The frame moved anyway.
Her boots scraped on the floor as she tried to hold it. The lunch box slammed against her side. The folded summons, receipt, and proof strip crackled inside her jacket.
The glass behind the Manual Claim Window printed one last line.
Witness retrieval in progress
Carrier dispute retained
Then the booth lights went out.
The red rails brightened.
Kai could not turn his body, but he could see enough. The rails were not solid. They were the collector's strings pulled tight along the floor, two red lines leading away from the window and back into the drawer passage.
"Let go," he said.
Nia held tighter. "It will take you."
"It already is."
"That doesn't make it safe."
"If you fall under the wheels, it gets both of us."
The frame jerked forward.
Nia stumbled, caught the rail with one hand, and ran beside it. She did not let go. The E key was in her other hand, bent tooth flashing under the red light.
The passage did not look the same on the way back.
Drawers that had been shut now showed thin white cracks around their edges. A few handles had turned outward. Paper labels slid behind their glass slots as the carrier passed, changing too fast for Kai to read.
The red rails ignored the main track.
They pulled the frame into the side groove under the wall counter. The ceiling lowered. Nia had to bend almost double. Her shoulder hit the drawers twice. The second hit made the lunch box click.
Kai's left hand lifted.
He saw it move toward the box.
"Lid," he said.
Nia slammed her forearm down over it.
The hand dropped.
Still no feeling.
The wall glass above the groove woke in strips.

Manual exit deferred
Route reversal authorized
Nia read the last line and glanced back toward the Manual Claim Window. The booth was already closing behind them. Its shutter slid down. The child-height stool folded flat into the floor. The blank card slot vanished behind a steel plate.
"It locked the way out," she said.
"It said deferred."
"That is worse."
The red rails tugged the front wheels harder.
The carrier frame scraped sideways through a bend made for carts, not people. Kai's right shoulder hit the wall. Pain flashed white and then settled into the joint. His left hand did not move this time. That made him like it less.
Nia tried the damaged E key against a service latch they passed.
The key did not fit.
The bent tooth caught on the edge of the slot and scraped a bright line into the metal. Nia pulled it back before it snapped. Her thumb moved over the missing shape in the key's teeth.
"It is already worse," she said.
The wall answered:
Dependent key degradation recorded
Route authority reduced
Nia's mouth tightened.
She did not look at Kai.
He could not tell whether she blamed the window, the key, or herself. He did not ask. The red rails were still pulling.
Nia read while running. "Storage means body?"
"It means don't touch anything first."
"That was not my question."
"It's the only answer I have."
The red rails pulled them through a narrow service slit.
Cold air hit Kai's face.
The slit opened into a room with a low ceiling and rows of metal cages stacked three high. Each cage was the size of a mail locker, too small for a person and too large for a document. Sealed bags filled some cages. Shoes, cracked phones, folded jackets, name badges, lunch boxes, wristbands, loose keys, and water-damaged paper tags filled the others.
Nothing had a blue System label.
Every cage had a white station card instead.
FOUND AT BOUNDARY
UNREGISTERED
DO NOT RETURN TO ROUTE
Nia slowed beside the frame.
Kai knew what she was seeing.
Mateo was not in this cage.
This was where the station kept things the route had failed to return.
All the things the System could not quite file, stacked in cages until another process found a use for them.
The red rails led to the far wall.
A cage there had already slid halfway out.
Its card read:
MATEO R-
Witness record incomplete
Condition irrelevant
The carrier frame stopped in front of it.
The waist rail tightened.
Kai's breath cut short.
Nia moved before he could speak. She stepped between him and the cage, lunch box under one arm, E key in her fist.
"You do not get to use him," she said.
The room answered from three glass strips at once.
Witness retrieval requires confirmation
Confirm sighting
Confirm name
Confirm route contact
Nia looked back at Kai.
He understood why.
She had not seen Mateo first. She had seen the body after Kai found it. Kai had read the name patch. Kai had made the shape into proof.
The room wanted him.
The cage opened another inch.
Inside was not Mateo's body.
Nia's shoulders loosened for half a second.
Then she saw the rest.
There was a delivery jacket folded around a dead phone. One sleeve was dark with old water. A torn reflective stripe crossed the chest. A name patch had been cut from the fabric and pinned to a white card.
MATEO
Under it, the card had a second line written by a different machine.
R-
The dead phone lit up.
No battery icon.
No screen crack.
Just white text on black.
SIGHTING REQUIRED
Nia raised the E key toward the cage lock.
Kai caught the problem before she touched it.
"Wait."
She froze with the key half an inch from the slot.
The slot was not shaped like the E key.
It was shaped like a thumb.
The glass printed:
Carrier witness may confirm
Touch to load record
Nia's face went still.
"No."
The carrier frame shifted forward.
Kai's right hand moved with it.
The waist rail pressed him down, the right arm rail unlocked, and the frame pushed his marked hand toward the cage. The half ticket under his skin burned so sharply his vision narrowed.
Nia grabbed his wrist.
The frame kept moving.
Her boots slid.
"Do not fight the frame," Kai said.
"Then fight it yourself."
"I am."
He was not sure that was true.
He dragged breath down into his ribs. The first meridian warmed and then stung. He felt the pulls more clearly.
Red rails behind.
White phone ahead.
Black pressure under the carrier frame.
The lunch box light under Nia's arm.
A thin, flat pressure waited inside the phone.
It felt like an incomplete station record.
Kai pushed against the pull in his right hand.
The hand slowed.
The frame did not.
His shoulder twisted against the rail. Pain ran down his arm into fingers he could barely feel. The marked palm hovered over the thumb slot.
The glass printed:
Confirmation timeout
Default witness: carrier
Nia shoved the E key into the side of the cage, not the lock.
The bent tooth scraped metal.
Then snapped.
The broken tooth fell through the grate and vanished under the floor.
The cage jerked sideways.
The phone flickered.
The thumb slot lost its white light for half a second.
Kai used that half second.
He slammed his right palm against the cage frame instead of the slot.
The ticket under his skin burned.
The white scratch on his wrist flared.
[Name offered]
Then another line scratched under it.
[Name refused]
The room went silent.
Nia stared at his wrist.
Kai did not get to enjoy refusing anything.
The carrier frame tightened around him.
The rail around his waist tightened until his ribs creaked. The right arm rail locked back down. His marked hand stayed stuck to the cage frame, palm flat against cold metal.
The glass changed.
Carrier refusal recorded
Witness record unstable
Alternate anchor required
The lunch box clicked open.
Nia swore and caught the lid with her elbow, but light had already spilled out. It touched the delivery jacket in the cage.
The dead phone answered.
The screen filled with a map.
Not a city map.
Not a System route.
A station diagram with whole sections missing. One lower line blinked red at the edge of the erased area.

The phone vibrated once.
The name patch on the jacket curled.
MATEO
The letters peeled from the cloth and stuck to the inside of the cage glass.
Nia's hand moved toward them.
"Don't," Kai said.
"It's a name."
"It is bait."
"It is witness."
"Then treat it like bait first."
The red rails behind the carrier frame drew closer together.
The collector spoke from the room entrance.
"Witness may be collected."
The cages along both walls clicked open one by one.
Not far.
Only a finger-width.
Enough for labels to slide out.
Kai saw fragments.
GARRICK V-
DEREK M-
MATEO R-
Names the System had reassigned, converted, lost, or failed to keep.
The lunch box light touched all of them and bent toward Kai.
His left hand rose again.
Nia slammed the lid shut with both hands.
This time it closed.
The sound cracked through Boundary Storage like a gunshot.
Every cage stopped moving.
The dead phone in Mateo's cage stayed lit.
The glass printed:
Alternate anchor accepted
Witness route loaded
Carrier dispute bearing witness
The rail released Kai's right hand.
He pulled it back against his chest. The palm had a cold rectangle pressed into the skin where the cage frame had touched him.
Nia looked down at the E key.
One tooth was gone.
The shaft was bent.
"Will it still open anything?" Kai asked.
Nia closed her fist around it.
"It opened this route."
The carrier frame began to reverse.
The dead phone screen turned toward them by itself inside the cage.
One final line appeared.
WITNESS: MATEO R-

Route loaded to Platform 0
Then the phone went black.
The red rails pulled tight.
The carrier frame rolled backward out of Boundary Storage, dragging Kai toward the passage again.
Nia ran with it.
Behind them, in the cage, a knock came from inside the dead phone.
Nia looked back.
The cage door did not move.
The phone stayed black.
The knock came again.
Lower.
Closer to the floor.
Kai could not see the cage anymore. The frame had already dragged him through the service slit. Red light from the rails filled the narrow passage. The wall drawers slid past on both sides, their labels blanking out as he passed them.
"Do not go back for it," he said.
Nia kept pace beside the frame. "I was not going to."
"You looked back."
"That is not the same thing."
The red rails turned sharply left.
The carrier frame followed.
This path did not return to the Manual Claim Window. It ran under it. The floor dropped by inches, then by feet, taking the frame down a sloped track between concrete walls. The ceiling pressed low enough that Nia had to crouch and hold the lunch box against her stomach.
The damaged E key scraped the wall when she lost balance.
She caught herself on the rail.
The wall glass beside the slope woke in narrow red strips.

Audit summons required
Nia pulled the folded summons from inside her jacket with two fingers. The paper had gone warm.
Kai read the top line as it shook in her hand.
AUDIT SUMMONS
The ink below it had changed.
Witness attached:
MATEO R-
Carrier dispute:
KAI CHEN
Nia folded it shut fast.
"It added you."
"Yes."
"It should not be able to do that."
"It called me the carrier dispute."
The frame dropped another foot.
This time Kai's stomach hit the rail hard enough to blur the red strips. Nia grabbed the side of the frame with both hands. The lunch box banged against the rail and clicked.
His left hand lifted.
Nia pinned the lid with her elbow before he could warn her.
"I have it," she said.
The red rails narrowed until they were almost touching the carrier wheels.
Ahead, a square opening appeared in the floor. No stairs. No lift cage. Just a dark vertical drop with a metal rim and a sign bolted above it.

The carrier frame did not slow.
Behind them, from the passage they had left, the dead phone knocked a third time.
This time the sound came from the audit summons in Nia's hand.
