CHAPTER 39: At the Edge of Death

“No, no how can I take money from you good sir” said Miss Rurina.

I scratched my cheek “Please don’t do this…If you do not accept it, it will….you see trouble us”

She stood there for a minute in confusion and suddenly realized something, she reluctantly took the money and bowed.

“Please visit again sometime good sir” she requested.

Since we were travelling as a royal messenger and ambassador it wouldn’t have looked good to go without paying albeit the good work.

We checked out after having breakfast and also getting some packed for the journey.

“What is our next stop?” Hayato san asked me.

“Towards the east there is a major city situated at the foothills of the great Samarian range known as Hearthglen”. I pointed out in the mirror.

He glanced at the map and then began to enjoy the scenery from the window.

Rain continued, a rhythmic chitter-chatter on the roof of our carriage, we have been travelling for around 5 days now.

One thing I noticed was that everyone except me and Hayato-san slept very very less. Whenever I would woke up in the middle of the night I would find them sitting and talking or training.

I even found Hassan sitting by the campfire reminiscing about his past.

After travelling for a day and a half the chilling wet wind began to weaken and the rain stopped.

Soon the trees and vegetation also decreased, revealing green marsh meadows on the other side of the border.

I could see huge mountains at some distance veiled by the curtain of white cotton clouds.

The sun was signing off from its duty and the sky was beginning to darken.

“I am going to take a piss” I descended the carriage walked some distance. The wet meadows stretching as far as my vision can go.

Suddenly my pant loosened and fell. “Hey!” I bent down to set it up again.

WHOOSH

Something went just above my head, cutting air violently.

I looked around and saw some horses coming towards us fast.

I ran and alerted the escorting guards.

There were 10 men on horses. Each one of them armed.

“Introduce yourselves!” the senior knight shouted while unsheathing his sword.

“There’s no point in introducing ourselves to dead men” said the man with a scar on his cheek while unmounting from his horse.

Then another man unmounted from somewhere and came in front.

“You?” I squeaked

The other man was none other than the one I beat at the inn.

“Is he the one?” the scarred man asked.

He nodded.

The scarred man smiled and said “I will let you all go unharmed” he raised his finger towards me “Give him to us and you all can go” he put the offer in front.

“Do you even know what you are saying? He is the Royal-“ the senior knight Sir Graham was about to say.

“This is not principality, this is an unclaimed territory under no one’s jurisdiction” he continued scratching his itching ear “and a fitting graveyard for y’all” he added with a grin.

Till then both of the sides had pulled out weapons.

But this time the situation looked dangerous.

There were only 8 escort guards and they were 10 including the man I met at the inn.

SHIING!

Clang!

Swords clashed.

All the 8 escort guards clashed with 9 armed men from the other side.

The senior knight Sir Graham was alone taking on two guys.

Cling! Clang!

You sure are tough for your age old man!” laughed one of the guy fighting Sir Graham.

Sir graham who was enveloped in a brown glow pushed both of them back with sheer strength.

“It seems no one is coming to save you” the scarred man walked towards me with his great sword leisurely resting on his shoulder.

“Why are you doing this?” I finally asked as I unsheathed my sword.

“What do you mean why, he is my younger brother” the scarred man spoke.

“But he was the one at fault, as a big brother shouldn’t you teach him that?” I asked lifting my sword.

“Teach? My younger brother spent 5 years at the frosthold front, if he wanted to enjoy a bit after coming here what was wrong in that?” saying that the scarred man jumped at me.

Clang!

Our swords met.

I managed to hold my ground but-

“Urggh” the force of his strike was so strong that my arms began to tremble.

CRACK!

ARGHHHHHHHHH” I kneeled.

He motioned a cutting arc with his great sword but the sword never came, instead he delivered a strong kick on my calf breaking my bone.

I turned around and sliced through but he ducked and delivered a punch on my solar plexus.

“What?” but this time it was his turn to be surprised. His punch hit something solid but he couldn’t see what.

I saw the opportunity and swung my sword.

But all I sliced was empty air.

“Shit, He’s fast” I muttered.

He moved behind, there was confusion in his eyes.

The scarred man instantly appeared in front of me this time.

I took the stance to swing my sword but delayed it for one second.

His great sword blurred, I counted “One” in my mind and dissolved the wall of emptiness.

I swung my weapon but instead of expected trajectory I swung my sword in a low horizontal arc.

When I finally had the time to process, I saw him at a distance. His leg was bleeding.

“You….” His eyes narrowed.

I took a defensive stance.

“………….”

He relaxed and held his great sword with both hands this time and took a proper stance. His eyes closed and a green glow enveloped him.

My hairs stood and chills went throughout the body.

I side stepped

The wall of emptiness broke like a glass and a big scar formed on the ground beside me.

I made the mistake of staring at it for a second.

The moment I turned my head, a terrible force slammed into my skull.

“LORD DANIELLL-“Sir Graham tried to come towards me.

“Not so fast old man” the guy he was fighting engaged with him in swordplay again.

He was bleeding from several places but was still in the condition to fight.

Others did not fared well, young knights were being pushed back in terms of raw skill from experienced mercenaries.

I flew for some distance before meeting the soft surface of wet grass.

My head was spinning, eyes blurred.

My ears were ringing and I became completely deaf from my left ear.

I felt someone standing near me. Even without clear vision I could tell who he was.

But then another person appeared in my frame.

“Kill him, don’t worry no one will find his dead body here” I heard the scarred man saying that to his younger brother.

I tried to desperately stand up.

“Khuggghh”

But he put his leg on my back

“The more you resist the more painful it will be for you” I heard.

I wanted to say something but someone grabbed my hair and forced my face upwards.

I saw the man from the inn smiling. His one hand wrapped in cloth and medicines.

He held a small axe in his good hand.

He raised his axe and smiled.

However just then a black panel appeared in front of me.

I blinked once and saw it more clearly.
