Chapter 94 | Suspicion [2nd GT & Gift Mass Release]
The fact that they had attempted to do something for him felt strange and surprising.
His gaze softened slightly.
"Are you sure?" Dexter asked slowly. "If you were hungry, you just needed to ask. I would have made something for you."
Mira shook her head. "No. We. wanted to make something special for you."
Dexter fell quiet. The idea sat strangely in his mind.
Why would they make something for him?
He was the one taking care of them, providing shelter, food, protection.
They had never once tried to reciprocate. The gesture, while seemingly innocent, didn’t add up.
He looked at the three of them seated on the couch, his eyes narrowing with suspicion as he glared at Mira.
She must be the mastermind behind it. While the system said Lyra was the devious and two faced one, he felt like Mira was the true prankster.
Mira rolled her eyes even harder.
"Why are you looking at us suspiciously?" she said. "You’re the suspicious one."
Dexter frowned. "Suspicious about what?"
Selene spoke again, her voice still quiet. However its tone had changed.
"What do you know about second awakening?"
The question landed like a stone dropped into still water.
Dexter’s expression tightened as his mind raced. Did one of them finally awaken?
He knew Mira had already awakened but the other two, Selene and Lyra, hadn’t awakened yet. Had one of them finally manifested the second ability?
"I have no idea what you’re talking about," Dexter lied smoothly.
Instantly, Selene’s head snapped toward him. "You’re lying," she said quietly. "Your heartbeat skipped a beat just now."
Dexter feigned shock, his eyes widening as he looked between the girls.
"Wait—the two of you awakened a second ability as well?" He turned to Mira. "You already awakened the Spectral arms ability. But what about you two?"
He turned to Selene. "Selene, you said you heard my heart skip a beat. What did you mean by that?"
A small smile crept onto Selene’s face. She replied in a quiet, gentle tone.
"I can finally see things now."
Dexter’s eyes popped open in exaggerated surprise. "You can see?"
Selene shook her head. "Not really. I can’t see colors or details. But I can see through vibrations. I can see the outlines. It’s not true sight, but..." She paused, her smile growing faintly. "I can see."
Dexter nodded warmly. "Congratulations. Even if it’s not the same as true sight, it’s still better than nothing."
Selene’s expression flickered with something like gratitude, perhaps—but she remained quiet, her nature keeping her words to herself.
Dexter then turned to Lyra.
"Lyra, what did you—"
’I awakened telepathy.’
The voice resonated inside his mind again—clear, soft, unmistakable. Lyra’s voice.
’I can hear the surface level thought thoughts of other people. And if they open their mind to me, I can speak to them also.’
Dexter clutched his chest in mock astonishment. "That’s incredible," he said, his voice dripping with theatrical disbelief.
Then, recovering, he stroked his chin thoughtfully. "Maybe it’s because your body realized what it had lost. Your body compensated, and awakened a new one to replace it."
Mira scoffed loudly as she gestured around at the three of them, with her chin.
"Do you think we’re idiots? Countless people lose their abilities, but they don’t magically awaken a talent that perfectly bypasses their specific disability. Lyra can’t speak, so she gets telepathy. Selene is blind, so she gets echolocation. I can’t move, so I get spectral arms. There is no such thing as a coincidence this perfect."
Mira’s crimson eyes locked onto him. "The only thing linking the three of us together is you, Dexter."
The three girls stared at him, suspicion etched deeply into their faces.
Dexter stared back at them for a long moment and when it seemed he was about to crack, he burst out laughing.
"Wait—wait." He held up a hand, trying to contain his laughter. "Are you three seriously telling me you believe I have the ability to grant other people talents?"
The girls glanced at each other but didn’t respond.
Because they realized how ridiculous it sounded.
No one in the world had the ability to grant talents. The idea was absurd and they knew it. Mira, despite her stubborn nature, knew it.
And yet...
Dexter was the only person in their lives. The only constant. The only variable that had entered their world before these awakenings began. He was the only suspicious person they could point to. But accusing someone of granting abilities was like accusing them of controlling the reality.
Mira’s mouth tightened. She wanted to argue, but even she couldn’t rationalize it.
Dexter grinned sheepishly and waved his hand dismissively.
"I’m really happy," he said lightly, "that the three of you managed to awaken abilities that can assist you. That’s all that matters, right?"
Then, seemingly as an afterthought, he turned toward Lyra and spoke aloud while projecting his thought to her at the same time.
"Lyra, your voice is incredibly sweet. Like a thousand sirens calling out at the same time. Its’s really nice and soothing."
Mira smirked. "Greedy pervert."
A faint blush crept across Lyra’s cheeks. Her voice fluttered softly in Dexter’s mind.
’Thank you.’
Dexter chuckled, then turned to Mira with a teasing grin. "Are you jealous? If you are, just beg me and I’ll compliment you too."
Mira sneered. "As if I’d need your compliments."
Dexter shrugged dramatically. "Alright. Suit yourself." He paused, then leaned in with a sly smile. "Jealous brat."
"I am not jealous," Mira shot back immediately.
Her quick response only made Dexter’s smile widen.
"Sure you aren’t."
Mira rolled her eyes, refusing to continue the argument.
"Anyway, I got you girls something."
He walked back to the entrance of the house, where he had dropped several bags earlier when he first arrived. He scooped them up and carried them into the living room, setting them down on the floor in front of the couch.
From the first bag, he pulled out a massive egg the size of a watermelon. It was the ancient egg he got from the system.
