Fast and Furious: I Control Everything

Chapter 282: The McQuaid Father and Daughter

"Dad, I'm home."

Backpack on her back, Mindy McQuaid looked like an ordinary elementary school student as she returned to an old apartment building on the outskirts of New York.

She reached out and knocked on the alloy gate, which looked completely out of place on the decrepit building.

Very soon, a narrow crack opened in the door, revealing a pair of wary eyes.

Once the owner of those eyes confirmed it was Mindy McQuaid standing outside, there was a faint sound from within.

About thirty or forty seconds later, the door finally opened, revealing the tall figure of a middle-aged man.

"Baby, you're back."

Mindy raised a cute little hand in greeting, but the moment she saw the stern look on her father's face, she immediately swallowed whatever she had been about to say and trotted inside with her short legs.

"Dad, this new door is sturdy enough, but it takes forever to open."

"And why don't we install a few cameras outside?"

As Mindy stepped into the old apartment building, Damon McQuaid, a retired police officer, had already bought the unremarkable place.

After a thorough renovation, the place had not only become far better insulated, but the huge interior space of the whole old apartment building was also enough for Damon to modify it and use it to train his daughter, grooming her into a top assassin.

Damon did not trust cameras to protect the two of them.

After his daughter entered, he immediately shut the door and locked it from top to bottom with more than a dozen bolts.

Only after all that did he shake his head and tell her, "All machines..."

"...will betray me. Only the fighting skills and marksmanship I learned can protect me."

Mindy, echoing the same words as her father, tossed down her backpack.

She walked to the fridge, opened it, took out a carton of milk, and gulped down a few mouthfuls before turning back to Damon and asking, "Dad, are we training today too?"

Today was her birthday. Mindy had always behaved very obediently and sensibly in front of her father, but deep down she also had a rebellious heart.

She did not actually like daggers, combat knives, handguns, or bulletproof vests. She wanted to go roller skating, go bowling, and have a fluffy Barbie doll like a princess as a birthday present.

But every time she told her father that, she had to face his sad, hurt, and pained expression.

Once Mindy saw how hard it was for her father to accept such things, the obedient daughter she was would silently swallow her true feelings.

At ten years old, Mindy was much more mature than children her age because she had grown up without a mother.

She knew that after the day, ten years ago, when her mother had given birth to her and then been attacked by a group of criminals while home alone with Mindy and her older sister, everything had changed.

Her mother had fallen in a pool of blood and lost her life forever.

And after her sister was taken away by those criminals and disappeared without a trace, her father's life had been reduced to only three things: revenge, taking care of her, and finding her sister again.

Over the years, he had been investigating who had killed her mother.

He had already found out who it was.

Unfortunately, the other side was too powerful, one of New York's most notorious drug lords.

Even to Mindy, her father seemed all-powerful.

But he still could not take revenge on those people alone.

And because of everything he had been through, he could no longer trust anyone.

He only trusted his daughter, Mindy.

That was why, once Mindy had become a little more sensible, she was trained under Damon's supervision in all kinds of skills.

So while girls her age were still watching cartoons, playing house, and changing Barbie dolls' clothes, Mindy had already developed strength, stamina, and agility not far below that of a fourteen- or fifteen-year-old boy, along with decent marksmanship and solid hand-to-hand combat skills.

"We will train as usual. We just won't do it at home today."

Damon, as if he had not understood the plea hidden in his daughter's words, quickly picked up a suitcase inside the house and said to Mindy, "Come on. We are going to the usual place."

The look of anticipation in Mindy's eyes disappeared at once.

But she still nodded obediently and got into the car with her father.

The two of them drove for twenty or thirty minutes before reaching an area near what looked like a dried-up riverbed.

Damon parked the car by the side of the road and picked up the suitcase.

Mindy followed behind him as the two of them soon descended into the riverbed.

Damon quickly opened the suitcase and took out a small bulletproof vest specially tailored to fit his daughter's body.

"Mindy, put the vest on under your clothes."

"Okay, Dad."

Mindy looked curiously at the vest, then took off her jacket and quickly put it on underneath her clothes.

After that, Damon took out a handgun.

He checked it, then loaded the magazine.

Mindy immediately remembered what her father had said a week earlier: he wanted her to personally experience what it felt like to be shot.

She had seen him kill drug dealers before, and the thought of them covered in blood after being shot by her father made her feel a flicker of fear.

After all, Mindy was only a ten-year-old little girl.

"Dad, I'm scared."

"You'll be fine, Mindy. Trust yourself. Be brave. There is nothing to be afraid of."

Seeing that Damon had no intention of stopping, Mindy could only force down her fear and ask, "Will it hurt a lot if I get shot?"

Damon smiled, nodded, then shook his head.

"It will, but only for a few seconds. The bullet's speed is over..."

"Seven hundred miles per hour!"

Mindy resigned herself to it.

She lowered her head slightly and did not look at her father, not wanting him to see the disappointment and fear on her face.

But Damon kept talking, still lecturing his daughter.

"At this distance, once I fire, you will definitely be knocked down. But it will hurt about the same as getting hit in the chest."

Mindy grumbled unhappily, "I hate being hit in the chest!"

Damon had already switched off the gun's safety and was aiming at Mindy's chest.

"You'll be fine, baby."

He raised the gun and fired.

In the empty riverbed, a sharp gunshot rang out.

Mindy fell to the ground at once, and the air was filled with a faint smell of gunpowder.

The father and daughter were each lost in their own thoughts and did not notice that, hundreds of meters away on another stretch of the riverbed, an Asian young man was sitting on the ridge above the dried-out channel.

He held a pair of binoculars in his hand, watching the father and daughter while also speaking quietly on the phone.

"Perkins, how much longer until you get me the information?"

"Do not tell me you are already out of Continental coins."

"Go get me the information I asked for..."

"Relax. I will not make you work for free."

"Fine. Tonight I guarantee you will not get any sleep."
