Chapter 84: Purifier the Troublemaker and an Invitation from Kamar-Taj
Mira rubbed her temples with clear disdain and rolled her eyes at the Ancient One. "Old timer, does the Sanctum have paper-thin walls? I swear you can hear every whisper through the front door."
"The New York Sanctum is linked to Earth's mystical barriers," the Ancient One replied with a serene smile. "Every corner is within my perception." She rose gracefully and gestured toward the stairs. "Ms. Purifier is resting in the basement containment room. Follow me."
Mira took Compiler's hand and followed the Sorcerer Supreme down the grand spiral staircase. Ancient scrolls and glowing blue magical flames lined the walls, and the scent of sandalwood mixed with faint Siren digital energy.
"The security down here is tighter than S.H.I.E.L.D.'s vault," Mira remarked. "If I didn't know better, I'd think you were keeping a Dormammu zealot locked up."
The Ancient One chuckled. "The zealots don't hit quite as hard as your Purifier."
They stopped before a heavy stone door covered in glowing golden runes. "When she first arrived, her chaotic energy nearly tore open half of Bleecker Street. After she woke up, she assumed she was in an enemy trap and immediately deployed her full naval rigging in my foyer. I had no choice but to restrain her."
The Ancient One tapped the door. Golden runes flowed like water, and the heavy barrier swung open.
Inside the empty stone room, complex Kamar-Taj runes covered the floor and walls. In the center floated a large hemispherical golden barrier—like a transparent cage. Inside it sat Purifier.
Her long silvery-white hair was a frizzy mess. Her golden eyes were filled with grievance. Her white crop top and black shorts were wrinkled, and her massive black-and-yellow naval rigging was tightly bound by glowing golden chains, its cannons hanging limply.
The moment Purifier saw Mira, her eyes lit up. She lunged forward with a shout.
"Boss! Boss Mira! You finally came to save me—!"
Thud.
She slammed face-first into the invisible barrier and slid down like a pancake, hair covering her squished face.
Mira facepalmed. "Purifier… Zero sent you to help me. Couldn't you behave for five minutes? You tried to blow up the front door the second you arrived. Of course you got restrained."
"How was I supposed to know?!" Purifier whined, sliding dramatically down the barrier. "Zero said I'd land safely in the Mirror Sea! Instead I woke up on some random street surrounded by weird magic. I thought it was an Antioch trap, so I powered up my rigging… and then this bald old lady pinned me to the floor!"
She shot a fearful glance at the Ancient One and shrank back.
The Sorcerer Supreme smiled gently. "If I hadn't stopped her, half of Bleecker Street would have been vaporized by her plasma cannons. Ordinary humans couldn't survive that."
"Boss, save me!" Purifier pressed against the barrier, fake digital tears forming. "This magic is squeezing my rigging! I'm gonna malfunction! Right, Sister Compiler?!"
Compiler gave her a flat, cold stare. "System logs show you attempted to charge your main cannons three times and attacked the Sanctum's barrier five times, creating seventeen minor spatial rifts. The Ancient One only restrained you. No damage to your chassis. This is entirely your fault."
Purifier wilted instantly, hair drooping like a scolded dog. "But I didn't mean to… Zero messed up the coordinates again…"
Mira sighed, caught between exasperation and amusement. She turned to the Ancient One. "Sorry for the trouble. Let her out. I promise she'll behave and won't try to bomb your front door again."
"I trust you, Ms. Mira." The Ancient One tapped the barrier. The golden cage and chains dissolved instantly.
The second she was free, Purifier launched herself at Mira, latching onto her arm with a dramatic wail. "Boss! I was almost suffocated in there!"
"Get off—you smell like weird magic." Mira tried pushing her away, but Purifier clung like glue. Mira sighed and glanced at Compiler. "Run a diagnostic."
Compiler's fingers flickered with blue data streams. "Chassis integrity 100%. Core energy stable. Minor energy depletion only. She'll recover fully after recharging in the Mirror Sea."
"Told you I'm durable!" Purifier boasted, then quickly wilted again under Mira's warning glare. She hid behind her obediently.
Mira turned to leave. "We won't take up more of your time, old timer."
As they reached the stairs, the Ancient One called out, "Ms. Mira, one moment."
Mira paused suspiciously. "What? If it's about repair fees, I'm broke. Go ask Tony Stark—he's technically my boss."
The Ancient One chuckled. "No repair fees. I simply wanted to extend my earlier invitation. You're welcome to study magic at Kamar-Taj anytime. The knowledge you brought back from Asgard's World Tree might pair interestingly with our dimensional arts. It could offer new inspiration for your technology."
Mira hesitated. She was curious about Kamar-Taj's spatial magic… and the Time Stone hidden somewhere within the Sanctum.
She raised an eyebrow. "Don't you have a destined disciple named Stephen Strange to train? Why bother with a Siren like me? I'm not exactly a model student. If I accidentally dismantle your Sanctum while experimenting, don't say I didn't warn you."
The Ancient One smiled knowingly. "Strange has his own path. You have yours. The doors of Kamar-Taj are always open—even if you only want to browse the library or chat."
Mira studied the Sorcerer Supreme's calm, all-seeing eyes for a moment, then shrugged. "Fine. I'll drop by when I have time. But no tuition, no mandatory classes, and I'm not becoming anyone's guardian."
"Of course. Whatever you wish."
Mira waved and headed out with her companions. Purifier bounced along behind her, bombarding her with questions. "Boss! Who was that super strong bald lady? Is magic stronger than Wisdom Cubes? Can I learn it too?"
"If you have to ask, it means you can't beat her," Mira said, patting her head. "And behave yourself. Try bombing another door and I'll dismantle you myself before sending you back to Zero."
"Yes, Boss! I'll be good!" Purifier saluted dramatically.
Outside the Sanctum, morning sunlight bathed Bleecker Street. Mira summoned her pink-and-white electric bicycle from her spatial storage. Compiler sat in the middle, holding Mira's hoodie. Purifier climbed on the back, wrapping her arms around Compiler's waist.
Mira twisted the throttle and merged into traffic, humming "The People's Navy Advances Forward" as the bike rolled smoothly down the Manhattan streets. Purifier chattered nonstop while Compiler replied in flat, occasional comments.
Back at the Sanctum, the Ancient One stood behind the large circular stained-glass window, watching the bright pink bicycle disappear into the city. She took a slow sip of tea, a gentle, knowing smile on her face.
This timeline had definitely become far more interesting.
