Marvel: The Silver-Haired Hacker and Her Mecha Fleet

Chapter 80: Apocalyptic Social Death and Peter’s Reward

Morning sunlight streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows of Midtown School of Science and Technology, filling the hallway with gentle warmth.

Mira adjusted her backpack and strolled into AP Calculus just as the final bell rang. Given the gossip-loving nature of American high schoolers, she had expected her arrival to trigger instant chaos. After all, the entire school was buzzing with rumors that she was "having a secret affair with Iron Man."

She braced herself for jeers, stares, and a barrage of nosy questions.

Instead, the noisy classroom fell completely silent the moment she stepped through the door. Dozens of eyes turned toward her in perfect unison, filled with a strange mix of curiosity, awe, and awkward distance.

Mira raised an eyebrow. Uh oh. This has blown up way out of proportion.

She walked calmly to her desk by the window and set her bag down. Peter, sitting right next to her, immediately leaned over. His face looked like a chaotic paint palette as he clutched a folded newspaper in his hands.

"Mira… you really need to see this," he whispered, sliding the paper toward her.

The second she unfolded it, Mira had to fight the urge to throw it back in his face.

The front-page headline screamed in massive bold letters:

"IRON MAN'S MYSTERIOUS INTERN: MIDTOWN HIGH SCHOOL GENIUS GIRL'S TRUE IDENTITY EXPOSED!"

The high-resolution photo beneath it was taken at the exact moment last night when Tony had dragged her into conversation outside the Stark Expo. Tony stood in his gleaming armor with one hand resting arrogantly on her shoulder, flashing his signature grin. Mira, in her casual white hoodie and holding a plastic cup of mango smoothie, was rolling her eyes at him with clear disdain.

The photo was infuriatingly well-taken—perfect composition, dramatic lighting, and crystal-clear detail on her silver ponytail.

The article itself was even worse, packed with wild speculation about her "deep, secretive relationship" with Tony Stark, her status as a VIP, and theories that she was a hidden wealthy heir.

Mira stared at it expressionlessly for a moment, then muttered, "I have to admit, the photo is technically excellent. It could probably win a Pulitzer…"

She turned to Peter with a resentful sigh. "Are the New York media outlets insane? Wasn't the Expo enough gossip for one night? Why put a random high school student on the front page? I'm literally just trying to survive senior year!"

Now she understood why the entire class had gone mute. Overnight, she had gone from "quiet smart girl" to "Iron Man's mysterious, possibly kept woman." No one dared speak to her.

"I didn't expect it to blow up this badly either," Peter said, rubbing the back of his neck. "The paper hit stands early this morning. The whole school already knows."

Gwen Stacy turned around from the desk in front of them, holding the same newspaper with an amused but helpless smile.

"The principal even pulled Peter and me into his office," Gwen said, laughing softly. "He told us to 'look after' you so reporters or crazy fans don't harass you."

Mira groaned and covered her face with her hand, silently cursing Tony Stark for the thousandth time. This is all that show-off's fault. If he hadn't yelled my name in front of all those reporters…

"By the way," Peter asked, eyes wide with innocent confusion, "why didn't you just run away yesterday? When Mr. Stark called your name, couldn't you have… I don't know, flown off or something? Since you're his top intern, he must've given you some cool tech, right?"

Mira: "..."

She couldn't exactly tell him she did have the means to vanish instantly.

"How is that possible, Peter?" she laughed it off. "Do you really think Tony Stark just hands out billion-dollar classified tech to random teenagers? Besides, flying away would have drawn way more attention than just walking to a car."

Peter stared at her for a long moment, clearly unconvinced, but eventually sighed and let it drop.

Mira felt a pang of guilt remembering how she had used him as a human shield at the school gate yesterday to escape the crowd. It really wasn't fair to the poor kid.

"Oh, right. This is for you."

She dug through her backpack and pulled out a crumpled but premium VIP ticket stub from the Stark Expo. It still carried Tony's authentic Sharpie autograph, the holographic security stamp, and even a faint mango juice stain from her smoothie cup.

Peter's eyes widened like supernovas. "HOLY CRAP! Tony's actual autograph!"

He carefully placed the ticket into his notebook as if it were a priceless artifact.

"Mira!! You're the best! I mentioned wanting Expo merch yesterday and you actually got this for me?!"

Seeing his genuine excitement, Mira smiled and ruffled his messy brown hair.

"Consider it an apology for pushing you out to face the paparazzi yesterday. Next time something like that happens, I'll shield you first."

"No need!" Peter waved his hands quickly, grinning brightly. "I'm already super happy. The reporters just asked me a few weird questions. It wasn't that bad!"

Gwen chuckled and patted Peter's shoulder. "Alright, calm down. Calculus is starting. Stop gossiping or the teacher will want another talk with you."

Peter immediately sat straight in his seat, then quickly turned around to give Mira a confident thumbs-up. "Don't worry, Mira! The others are just curious. They won't actually do anything to you."

Mira returned the gesture. The heavy social pressure in her chest eased a little. Thank goodness I have these two.

The shrill bell rang again. The balding math teacher walked in, noticed the unusually quiet classroom, and nodded in satisfaction before starting the lesson.

Mira rested her chin on her hand, staring blankly at the calculus formulas on the board while her mind wandered. She wondered if Tony was currently staring at the same newspaper and cursing the paparazzi. Or if Natasha was already reporting this mess to Director Fury.

The thought of Black Widow's frustrated expression last night made Mira smile inwardly. S.H.I.E.L.D. had been watching her for nearly a year and still had zero real evidence about her true identity.

"Student Mira Vale?"

The teacher's voice suddenly cut through her thoughts. The entire class turned to look at her again.

Mira stood up with a perfectly practiced good-student smile. "Yes, teacher?"

The math teacher pushed up his glasses, looking slightly nervous. "The principal asked me to tell you to be careful about your safety today. If any reporters sneak onto campus, notify administration immediately." He paused, then added awkwardly, "Also… your calculus homework from last night was, as usual, flawless."

Mira: "..."

Well, at least some things never change.

This wasn't the first time she'd become infamous at Midtown High… and it probably wouldn't be the last.
