Chapter 85: Saga 85: Flight Through Shadowed Lands
Dawn found them still moving, exhaustion setting in heavily despite the adrenaline of their escape, Thessaly’s pace slowing further as the night’s exertion took its inevitable toll on his weakened frame.
"We need to rest soon," Claire said, watching the old scholar stumble slightly over uneven terrain. "He can’t keep this pace much longer, and honestly, neither can the rest of us."
"Agreed," Sylvia said, though her eyes remained fixed on their back trail, watching for any sign of pursuit. "But we need somewhere defensible first. Open ground like this leaves us vulnerable if a search party catches up."
[I’m picking up movement approximately two miles behind our current position,] the system reported, mana suppression finally cleared enough to allow full functionality. [Consistent with organized pursuit rather than random patrol. They’ve found our trail.]
’How much time do we have?’
[At their current pace versus ours, perhaps an hour before they close the distance meaningfully. Less, if they’ve deployed faster scouts ahead of the main group.]
"We’ve got company," Kael relayed to the team. "Roughly an hour, maybe less."
Thessaly, despite his exhaustion, managed a weary but determined expression. "There’s a rock formation ahead, considerably defensible, with a narrow approach that would funnel any pursuers into a bottleneck. Won’t stop them entirely, but it’ll buy time."
"Lead the way," Harriden said.
They pushed forward with renewed urgency, reaching the described formation just as the first signs of organized pursuit became visible on the horizon behind them—a considerable force, judging by the dust cloud kicked up by their approach, clearly not willing to simply let escaped prisoners disappear into their territory unchallenged.
"This isn’t a small patrol," Yuki said grimly, studying the approaching force. "That’s a proper hunting party."
"Then we make our stand here, buy Thessaly time to recover, and figure out our next move from a position of actual advantage," Sylvia said, already directing the team into defensible positions among the rocks.
The pursuing force arrived within the hour, considerably more numerous than their initial captors, led by a demon officer whose bearing suggested military rank well beyond simple border patrol.
"Escaped prisoners," the officer called out, voice carrying easily across the intervening distance. "Surrender now, and the tribunal may yet show leniency for this considerable breach of custody."
"We’re not interested in returning to custody," Kael called back, mana already gathering at his fingertips. "Not until we’ve had a chance to properly investigate what your administration’s been hiding about Queen Vesharia."
The officer’s expression shifted visibly at that name, surprise and something like genuine alarm breaking through his professional composure. "You know nothing of matters beyond your understanding, human. Stand down, or face the consequences of continued resistance."
"We know enough to recognize when a kingdom’s actively suppressing its own history," Sylvia said, swords already beginning to manifest around her. "And we’re not willing to simply disappear back into your cells while that suppression continues unchallenged."
The officer’s hesitation lasted only a moment before he gestured sharply, his forces advancing with disciplined, coordinated precision that suggested considerably more combat experience than the border patrol they’d initially encountered.
"Positions," Sylvia called out, the team already falling into practiced formation despite their exhaustion. "We hold here as long as we can, then fall back toward whatever sanctuary Thessaly mentioned. Whatever happens, protect him. He’s the key to proving what we’ve uncovered."
The battle that followed was fierce but controlled, Azure Blake’s considerable combined strength allowing them to hold the bottleneck formation effectively despite being significantly outnumbered, careful restraint governing every strike to avoid unnecessary casualties on either side even as the demon forces pressed their assault with increasing urgency.
"They’re not letting up," Claire called out, wards straining against the sustained pressure of the demon officer’s own considerable magical capability.
"Then we don’t either," Kael said, Black Hole crackling faintly at his fingertips as he moved to reinforce the weakening point in their defense, determined to hold their ground long enough for whatever path forward Thessaly’s knowledge could still provide.
The demon officer pressed his own assault personally, engaging Sylvia directly in a clash of blade and celestial steel that sent sparks scattering across the rocky terrain, his skill proving considerably beyond typical border patrol competence.
"You fight well, for a human," he acknowledged grudgingly, disengaging briefly to reassess. "Though I don’t understand why you’d risk so much for buried history that means nothing to your own kingdom."
"Because buried history has a habit of resurfacing violently when nobody addresses it properly," Sylvia countered, swords repositioning for another exchange. "We’ve seen that pattern before, and we don’t intend to let it repeat unchecked here."
Behind their front line, Yuki’s rapid gunfire kept the flanking soldiers pinned back, while Harriden’s shadow-work disrupted formation attempts before they could properly coordinate, the team’s practiced coordination proving more than a match for raw numbers despite their exhaustion.
"Kael," Thessaly called out weakly from his sheltered position, "there’s a narrow passage just beyond the ridge, barely wide enough for single file. If we can break contact and reach it, the pursuing force won’t be able to follow in anything but a thin line, easily contested."
"Everyone, fall back toward the ridge on my signal!" Kael shouted, gathering enough Black Hole energy for a controlled, localized disruption rather than the devastating full-scale version he’d used against the Sleeping Ruin, just enough to force the pursuing line back several critical seconds.
The disruption bought exactly the window they needed, the team breaking contact in coordinated retreat, Kael carrying Thessaly once more as they scrambled toward the narrow passage the scholar had identified, the demon officer’s furious shouts echoing behind them as his forces struggled to reorganize pursuit through the newly created chaos.
"Keep moving!" Sylvia urged, bringing up the rear alongside Harriden, both of them fending off the most persistent pursuers while the rest of the team pressed through the passage’s narrow confines.
They emerged eventually into a hidden valley beyond the ridge, the pursuing force’s shouts growing fainter behind them as the passage’s narrow bottleneck did exactly as Thessaly promised, slowing their pursuers to a crawl against the team’s determined, exhausted flight toward whatever sanctuary still waited ahead.
