I Thought I Was Collecting Systems, Not Overpowered Wives

Chapter 84: Saga 84: The Breakout

Escape planning proceeded carefully over the following two days, Thessaly’s detailed knowledge of the guard rotation combining with Harriden’s instinctive grasp of infiltration tactics to produce a workable, if considerably risky, plan of action.

"The suppression field’s power source runs through a central conduit beneath the tribunal chamber itself," Thessaly explained, tracing the rough diagram once more. "Disrupt that conduit, even briefly, and the dampening effect weakens considerably across this entire cell block, though the guards will notice the fluctuation almost immediately."

"Which means we’d need to move fast once it happens," Sylvia said, working through the timing carefully. "Claire, can you manage a temporary overload if we get you close enough to the conduit?"

"Given my staff’s current confiscated status, I’ll need to improvise something considerably cruder than my usual approach," Claire said, though her tone carried confident determination despite the constraint. "But yes, I think I can manage something workable."

Their opportunity arrived on the third night, when the reduced skeleton crew patrol pattern Thessaly had identified finally aligned with the guard rotation shift change he’d spent considerable time tracking. Harriden, still retaining just enough residual shadow ability despite the suppression to slip his restraints unnoticed, moved first, working methodically to free the rest of the team from their own dampening bands using a combination of lockpicking and careful shadow manipulation.

"Everyone stay quiet," he whispered, freeing Kael last. "The patrol shift happens in approximately four minutes. We need to reach the maintenance tunnel before the new rotation settles into position."

They moved through the obsidian corridors with practiced stealth, Thessaly leading despite his weakened condition, guiding them unerringly toward the tribunal chamber’s substructure where the suppression conduit ran, according to his considerably detailed knowledge, directly beneath a maintenance grate.

"Here," Thessaly whispered, gesturing toward the grate. "Claire, if you’re going to attempt that overload, now’s the moment."

Claire knelt beside the grate, improvising a crude but functional disruption spell using nothing more than raw mana channeled directly through her fingertips, the suppression field’s residual weakness from their earlier restraint-breaking making the attempt considerably more feasible than it might have been at full strength.

"This is going to be loud," she warned.

"Do it anyway," Sylvia said. "We’re out of better options."

The conduit overloaded with a resonant crack that echoed through the entire substructure, the suppression field flickering violently before failing entirely across the immediate vicinity, Kael feeling the sudden, overwhelming rush of his full mana capacity returning all at once.

"Move!" Harriden hissed, already sprinting toward the maintenance tunnel entrance Thessaly had identified.

Alarms began sounding almost immediately, the demon kingdom’s security response considerably faster than they’d hoped, shouted orders echoing through the corridors as guards scrambled to respond to the sudden security breach.

"We’ve got company," Yuki called out, spotting the first responding patrol rounding the corridor behind them.

"Handle them without killing anyone if you can manage it," Kael said, already moving to cover their retreat. "We’re trying to avoid making this worse, not start an actual war."

The ensuing confrontation was brief but intense, Azure Blake’s full capabilities—finally freed from suppression—proving more than sufficient to incapacitate the responding guards without lethal force, Sylvia’s swords disarming rather than executing, Harriden’s shadow binds restraining rather than killing, the team working with practiced coordination despite the chaos of their sudden, violent escape.

"Tunnel’s just ahead," Thessaly gasped, clearly struggling to maintain the pace despite his obvious determination.

"Kael, help him," Sylvia called out, already engaging a fresh wave of responding guards.

Kael swept the weakened scholar up without hesitation, carrying him the remaining distance as the team pressed forward into the maintenance tunnel’s cramped, poorly lit passage, the sounds of pursuit echoing behind them as they descended into the unfamiliar darkness, uncertain exactly where the tunnel’s winding path would eventually lead them, but certain, at least, that remaining in the tribunal’s custody was no longer an option they could safely consider.

The tunnel wound deeper underground than Kael had expected, the air growing thick and stale, ancient waste-disposal infrastructure clearly abandoned in favor of more modern systems elsewhere in the settlement, leaving this particular passage forgotten enough to serve their escape but treacherous enough that footing proved uncertain in the near-total darkness.

"Which way?" Sylvia called back to Thessaly, still cradled against Kael’s shoulder.

"Left at the next junction," Thessaly managed, voice weak but steady. "It should lead toward the settlement’s outer perimeter, assuming the old maps I remember still hold true after all these years."

They pressed forward as quickly as the treacherous footing allowed, the sounds of pursuit gradually fading behind them as the tunnel’s twisting path put increasing distance between them and the tribunal’s guards. Eventually, a faint glimmer of natural light appeared ahead, the tunnel opening into a narrow ravine considerably beyond the settlement’s visible fortifications.

"We made it," Claire said, breathless with relief as they emerged into the cool night air.

"Don’t celebrate yet," Harriden cautioned, already scanning their surroundings for any sign of continued pursuit. "They’ll organize a proper search party the moment they realize we’ve cleared the tunnel entirely."

"Then we keep moving," Kael said, gently setting Thessaly down against a nearby rock formation to catch his breath properly. "Thessaly, where do we go from here? You clearly know this territory better than any of us."

Thessaly considered the question carefully, studying the star positions overhead with the practiced ease of someone who’d once navigated this landscape freely. "There’s a settlement deeper in demon territory, considerably more sympathetic to those who question the current administration’s official narrative. If we can reach it before the search parties organize properly, we might find genuine sanctuary rather than simply delaying our eventual recapture."

"Can you lead us there?" Sylvia asked.

"I can try. Though I’ll be honest—my strength isn’t what it once was, and the distance involved is considerable." Thessaly managed a tired but determined smile. "Still, having come this far, I don’t intend to simply give up now."

"We’ll help however we can," Kael said. "Whatever it takes to get you, and the rest of us, somewhere safe."

They set out into the unfamiliar demon territory under cover of darkness, Thessaly guiding them with careful, hard-won knowledge while the rest of the team remained alert for any sign of pursuit, the weight of their daring escape settling into cautious, hopeful determination as they pressed forward into the uncertain night ahead.
