Chapter 88 - 41: Zhou Jiawen Gets Drunk, Jiang Li and Shen Yanzhi Sleep in Separate Rooms (2)
Just as Jiang Manshu was about to refuse, Jiang Li cut in, "Let’s just call it a housewarming party for us."
A lot of people throw a housewarming party when they buy a new place. We just moved right into the villa when we bought it and never got around to having one.
Shen Yanzhi threw an arm around Jiang Li’s shoulder and chimed in, "Xiao Li and I have been a little busy, so we never got around to it. Since everyone’s here now, we can just call this our housewarming party."
Since they had put it that way, and everyone was curious to see what it was like to sleep in a villa, they all raised their glasses. "Then here’s to New Year’s Day and warming the house!"
When men get together, they do little more than smoke, drink, and chat about everything under the sun; when women get together, they discuss jewelry and accessories, or trade some gossip.
Sure enough, after a few drinks, the eight of them had split into three groups.
Jing Shiyun was with Jiang Manshu, Jiang Li was with Zhou Jiawen, and the remaining men were playing drinking games and shooting the breeze.
Perhaps it was the alcohol, but Zhou Jiawen, who already admired Jiang Li, was now in full-on fangirl mode, whining adorably. "Sister-in-law, compared to you, I’m completely useless."
Jiang Li chuckled. "How are you useless?"
Zhou Jiawen pouted. "I can’t do this right, and I can’t do that right. If that’s not useless, what is?"
"Especially after marrying Shen Yuchu. I don’t have a job, and as a full-time housewife, I feel like I’m completely losing touch with the world."
Jiang Li patted the back of Zhou Jiawen’s hand. "Then what is it you want to do?"
Zhou Jiawen tilted her head in thought, pursing her lips. "I’ve actually always dreamed of being a star." She sighed. "It’s just a shame I don’t have any real skills."
Jiang Li reached out, gently holding Zhou Jiawen’s chin and tilting it from side to side before finally saying, "If you can’t be a huge movie star, you could be an actress in short-form dramas."
She let go, picked up her glass, and took a sip. "Those short-form dramas are so popular right now. As long as you’re pretty, how could you not blow up?"
"But I don’t have any connections." She glanced over at the men shooting the breeze. "Besides, I’m worried my parents and Shen Yuchu wouldn’t approve."
Jiang Li put both hands on Zhou Jiawen’s shoulders and said with the utmost seriousness, "First and foremost, you are your own person. Only after that are you a daughter, a wife, and a daughter-in-law."
Seeing Zhou Jiawen’s eyes light up, Jiang Li added meaningfully, "And as for connections... if you want to do it, we can start filming whenever you’re ready."
People are driven by impulse, and fueled by this lifelong dream, Zhou Jiawen made a snap decision. "Okay! I’ll do it!"
Jiang Li was charmed by her enthusiasm and couldn’t help but pinch her cheek. "All right. If you say you’ll do it, then let’s do it."
Zhou Jiawen threw herself into Jiang Li’s arms, nuzzling against her. "Sister-in-law, you’re the best."
’She’s so soft and smells so good,’ Zhou Jiawen thought. ’Way better than that stinky husband of mine, Shen Yuchu.’
Jiang Li instinctively patted Zhou Jiawen’s head as if she were soothing a child. "Alright now, have some more to eat. I don’t think you’ve had much."
Zhou Jiawen looked up, her big, watery eyes gazing innocently at Jiang Li. "Then I want you to get me some, Sister-in-law."
Jiang Li chuckled and shook her head. "Alright, I’ll get you some."
She picked up her chopsticks and placed two chicken feet, a chicken wing, a fish fillet, and a spare rib on Zhou Jiawen’s plate. "Is that enough?"
Zhou Jiawen nodded. "That’s plenty, that’s plenty."
The dinner lasted for nearly two hours. During that time, they also discussed wedding dresses and other arrangements for the ceremony. The party only wound down after Shen Yugang, Jiang Bowen, and Shen Yuchu drank themselves under the table.
When Jiang Li came out of the shower, Shen Yanzhi was already lying in bed. "I never realized," she remarked, "that you could hold your liquor so well."
Drinking Jiang Bowen under the table is one thing, but you managed to outdrink Shen Yugang and Shen Yuchu, too.
’Is this really the same guy who wouldn’t touch a drop of alcohol back in the day?’
Shen Yanzhi rubbed his forehead. "Actually, my head is spinning too."
Seeing his state, Jiang Li asked tentatively, "Should I get you some honey water?"
Shen Yanzhi shook his head. "No, it’s fine. It’s late, don’t go to the trouble."
He patted the bed. "Come on, get in bed."
Jiang Li swallowed hard and tugged at her collar. "When you say ’get in bed’... do you mean the stationary kind of sleeping, or the more... active kind?"
’Who was it that came up with that saying? "There’s no such thing as over-plowed land, only a worn-out ox"?’
’At this rate,’ she thought, ’I’m the one who’s going to end up broken.’
But before Shen Yanzhi could answer, a loud POUNDING sounded at their bedroom door.
Jiang Li turned toward the door, puzzled. "Who could be pounding on the door this late?"
She asked the question, but her feet carried her toward the door of their own accord.
Just as Jiang Li reached the door, Shen Yanzhi grabbed a robe from the walk-in closet and wrapped it around her, enveloping her completely.
