Chapter 87 - 41: Zhou Jiawen Gets Drunk, Jiang Li and Shen Yanzhi Sleep in Separate Rooms
"Dinner’s ready."
Just as the Shen and Jiang parents had nearly finished discussing the wedding details, Shen Yanzhi came upstairs.
However, he couldn’t help but freeze when he saw two tables of people playing mahjong.
’If you didn’t know any better, you’d think this was a mahjong parlor, not a private home.’
Jing Shiyun said cheerfully, "Xiao Shen, thank you for all your hard work."
Shen Yanzhi waved his hand dismissively. "Not at all, not at all."
Jiang Bowen chimed in, "He’s right. So many of us are up here playing mahjong while you’re down there cooking."
Jiang Manshu added with a faint smile, "He should be working hard."
’She just never knew Shen Yanzhi could cook before.’
’As expected. A married son is like water splashed from a bowl.’
’Our love was wasted on him, after all.’
After two rounds, Jiang Li and Jiang Bowen were the biggest winners.
Jiang Li won over two thousand, and Jiang Bowen over one thousand. As soon as the game ended, Jiang Bowen stuffed his thousand-plus winnings into Shen Yanzhi’s hands. "Take it. This is the kingdom your dad conquered for you."
Shen Yanzhi was exasperated. Just as he was about to return the money, Jiang Li waved her hand grandly. "In that case, you can have my kingdom, too."
Shen Yanzhi shook his head with a doting smile and put the money in his pocket. "Alright, let’s go downstairs and eat."
’Besides, his money was Jiang Li’s money anyway.’
’So Jiang Bowen giving him the money was, in a way, just giving it to Jiang Li.’
The group went downstairs and entered the dining room.
When they saw the spread of dishes on the dining table, Shen Yuchu and Zhou Jiawen gasped in amazement. "Brother, did you make all of this yourself?"
There were over twenty different dishes, and no two were the same.
Shen Yanzhi grabbed the red wine that had been decanting and poured a glass for everyone. "I may have been the one cooking, but they all helped with the prep work. I just manned the stove."
After pouring the wine, he gestured for everyone to take a seat. "Come on, sit down. Don’t just stand there."
The dining table was a round, marble affair with a Lazy Susan, large enough to seat dozens.
The eight of them sat around it. The Shen and Jiang parents sat together, with Shen Yanzhi to Jiang Li’s left and Zhou Jiawen to her right.
Once everyone was seated, Xie Wan stepped forward to switch on the motorized Lazy Susan, then promptly retreated to the side, melting into the background.
Having just played mahjong with her, Shen Yugang saw this and waved her over. "Xiao Xie, why don’t you join us?"
Xie Wan waved her hands in refusal. "Oh, no, I’m fine."
In all her years as a housekeeper, she had never eaten with her employers, and she didn’t normally eat with Jiang Li and Shen Yanzhi either.
Jiang Li smiled. "It’s okay. Since my father-in-law invited you, you should join us."
She had actually asked Xie Wan to eat with them on more than one occasion, but Xie Wan always claimed she had already eaten.
But now that Shen Yugang had personally invited her, and since she had just been playing mahjong with them, she couldn’t use her usual excuse.
Jing Shiyun nodded in agreement. "Exactly, come sit with us. We’re all friends here, no need to be so formal."
’She may just be a housekeeper, but she has good character and plays with integrity. It’s always good to foster goodwill.’
A wave of emotion washed over Xie Wan. In all her years as a housekeeper, this was the first time she had ever felt so respected.
But she knew not to take their politeness for granted, so she insisted again. "Really, I’m fine."
Jiang Li frowned with a "tsk," stood up, walked over to Xie Wan, and without another word, grabbed her by the wrist and pushed her down onto a stool. "When I tell you to eat, you eat. Refuse again and I’ll dock your pay."
Xie Wan shivered. Anything but that. Docking her pay was out of the question.
She sat down obediently. "I’ll eat. Miss Jiang, please, sit down."
Only then did Jiang Li nod in satisfaction. "See? Wouldn’t it have been easier if you’d just done this from the start? You had to make me play the bad guy."
With that, she turned, went to the kitchen to grab a fresh set of cutlery, and placed a wine glass on the Lazy Susan, calling out to Shen Yanzhi, "Pour her some, too."
Xie Wan waved her hands in alarm. "Miss Jiang, no wine for me, please."
’She was still on duty; drinking was completely out of the question.’
Jiang Bowen chuckled. "If she doesn’t want to drink, let her be. You can persuade someone to eat, but you should never force them to drink."
Jiang Li took the wine glass off the Lazy Susan and patted Xie Wan’s shoulder. "Alright, then. Just help yourself. We won’t fuss over you."
"Okay."
Returning to her seat, she raised her glass. "Let’s raise a toast to the upcoming New Year."
Zhou Jiawen blinked. "Sister-in-law, we have to drive back later. Maybe we should have some juice instead?"
Jiang Li clicked her tongue in disappointment. "I already told you guys you should just stay the night. The rooms are all ready for you."
