Chapter 48- Final Preparations and the Repair Blueprint.
The Inscriptional Realm activated.
The chamber unfolded inside Leo’s consciousness.
Space expanded around him in clean, structured layers, each one precise and ordered.
The first stele appeared, and information poured into his mind without resistance. Every rune, every combination, every recorded historical application written on its surface transferred fully and locked into place.
A mental copy of the stele formed within the mental dimension and settled there as if it had always belonged.
One stele after another continued to manifest.
Each carried its own set of runes and patterns.
Hours passed.
Sunlight shifted across the windows of the chamber, but Leo did not notice. His attention remained fixed on the steles forming inside the Inscriptional Realm.
Stele after stele appeared. The space that had once held only the single stele from the trial and the virtual version of Mjolnir was no longer empty. The number of rune steles grew steadily until the mental space felt crowded with rune steles in orderly fashion.
Surtr observed everything from within the flame. He watched the process and found himself surprised by Leo’s ability.
"Even this is possible," Surtr muttered.
He flew across the mental space after being conjured by Leo. At first he moved like a curious child, examining every new stele as it took shape. Soon he adjusted to the environment and began commenting on the runes as they appeared.
"That rune was used by the great mage in the second war of the humans," the ancient flame murmured each time a new stele solidified.
"This one binds energy to matter. Without it, artifacts would have no permanence." The flame paused. "I know because some bastard used it on me. But I managed to break it, no matter how many times they tried. It’s a good rune, but they used it on the wrong opponent." There was a hint of disdain in its voice.
Leo studied the manifested runes carefully. He focused on complex patterns, turning them over in his mind, testing combinations, and committing their structures to memory.
Surtr kept talking.
Some of the comments were useful. Many were not.
The flame offered history mixed with personal grievances, technical notes mixed with self-praise.
Leo’s mouth twitched more than once as he listened, but he gave no reply.
He knew that answering would only encourage longer speeches. He ignored the arrogant flame and simply copied each set of runes into the corresponding virtual stele before moving to the next.
Another stele began to form. This one stood apart from the rest. Its surface was darker. Cracks ran across it, and a familiar corruption leaked from the damaged sections. The energy of the Inverse seeped out—black, oily, and pulsing with clear malevolent intent.
Surtr spoke at once. "Tsk. This one might be dangerous for you. But you have me, so you should be fine. Still, the corruption has bonded with the runes. Attempting to read it could—"
Leo did not wait for the sentence to finish.
He exited the mental realm and located the corresponding stele in the physical hall. He placed both hands against the stone and whispered a single word.
"Creation."
Golden flame rose from his palms and sank into the surface. The corrupted runes began to glow with pure light. Immediately afterward he spoke the second word.
"Destruction."
Black threads of flame unraveled. The corruption burned away until nothing remained. The true form of the runes returned, clean and intact.
"Done," Leo said.
He re-entered the Inscriptional Realm and virtualized the cleaned stele. Surtr remained silent for a moment, clearly surprised by how quickly the corruption had been removed.
"Hmph. That only worked because you used my power." The ancient flame didn’t missed the chance to praise itself.
Leo continued without comment. He virtualized the next stele.
As he moved from one stele to another, Surtr pointed out a specific rune.
"That one is called Stjarnbind—star binding. It locks magical energy into physical matter so completely that almost nothing can break it. That is the rune that holds the creature from the Inverse inside Mjolnir. Without it, the binding matrix would have faded centuries ago."
Leo paused at the mention of Mjolnir.
He examined the rune with care. He broke the stele apart in the mental space so that every individual rune became a three-dimensional model he could rotate, enlarge, and test. He studied the structure of Stjarnbind from every angle, noted how the energy channels locked into solid matter, and recorded the tolerances. Only after he was satisfied did he reassemble the stele and continue manifesting the remaining ones.
Surtr indicated another rune.
"Look at that. The Rune of Unraveling. It can deconstruct any magical structure into its component parts."
"Useful," Leo answered. "If I need to take the hammer apart, I can use this."
He continued the process until every available stele had been manifested and stored. At one point a space that should have produced a stele remained empty. Leo checked the physical hall and found the reason.
There was no stele in that location—only a deliberate gap where one had once stood. Someone had removed it on purpose. He noted the absence and moved on.
He spent the remaining hours finishing the rest of the copies. When the last stele was secured, he turned his attention to Mjolnir itself.
He examined the hammer thoroughly inside the mental space, noting every fault, every damaged section, and the exact composition of its remaining metal.
He would need replacement material suited to the original structure. His first plan was to return to the archives and research the metals available in Asgard. Surtr spoke before he could leave.
"You need Uru metal. That is the primary component of Mjolnir."
Leo paused and listened to Surtr.
"You will also need something to stabilize the core. The core has been heavily consumed by the corruption."
Leo considered the requirement. "A stabilizer needs to conduct magical energy while holding structural integrity under extreme conditions."
Surtr agreed. "I cannot think of any ordinary material that meets both needs."
Leo also racked his brain.
Mana conduction...
Oh....wait.....
Leo reached into his spatial storage and withdrew the Starfall Hammer. He directed it to Surtr to examine its composition.
Surtr studied it for several seconds. "This is excellent. High grade. Where did you obtain this material?"
"From the palace vault," Leo answered.
With a smug face, he continued. "It was sitting in a corner like discarded scrap. My Profound Eye found it."
Surtr made a sound of clear distaste at the smug tone but said nothing further beyond a short "Tsk."
Leo decided the next step. "I should tell Princess Freya about these materials. Starfall iron may take time to locate."
He prepared to leave the chamber in search of her. Before he could move, Freya arrived on her own. She walked toward him with her usual cold, distant expression.
"Have you found any useful runes?"
"Yes. Several. I was about to look for you. Mjolnir is too damaged. There are hollow sections. We will need materials." He listed them clearly. "I need you to locate two materials above all others: Uru and Starfall iron. Uru should not be difficult. Starfall iron may require a wider search. After those two are secured, arrange the strongest iron available in Asgard as well."
Freya stood still for a moment. She had only just arrived, and he was already issuing instructions. She gave no verbal reply. She simply nodded once and left without another word.
Leo watched the doorway, confused. "She just left?"
"Tsk. Idiot. You will remain single for life," Surtr grunted.
Leo shrugged and returned to the Inscriptional Realm.
He manifested a working forge filled with steady flame.
He needed a complete blueprint for the repair of Mjolnir—precise, detailed, and ready before the deadline.
He intended to run simulations until the design was solid.
The Starfall Hammer appeared beside him so he could cross-reference its properties. He reached out with Forge-Sight and connected to the residual resonance of Mjolnir that still lingered in his mind realm.
Images flooded his mind in sequence.
The hammer’s surface was cracked and corroded. Forty-seven runes stood dark and silent. Nearly forty percent of the original mass had been consumed by the creature’s hunger.
At the center lay the binding matrix—a complex web of energy that still held the creature in place, even though it was weakening. Fine cracks spread through the framework like fractures in aging ice. If the matrix broke, the creature would escape. If it remained intact, the creature stayed sealed.
Leo began to sketch the reconstruction.
"That approach will not hold," Surtr said. "Change it to one with higher adaptability."
Line by line and rune by rune, Leo rebuilt the hammer inside the mental space. He accounted for every crack, every weak point, and every dead rune. He reconstructed it from memory, from the residual resonance, and from the recorded structure of the original. Surtr’s knowledge proved useful at every stage. Together they designed the repair steps.
"Replace the forty-seven dead runes with new inscriptions. Use Starfall iron to fill the consumed sections. Preserve the binding matrix exactly as it stands," Surtr advised.
Inside the mental realm a young man, a flame with eyes and a mouth, and a hammer worked in coordination.
The blueprint that formed was more complex than the one used for the Starfall Hammer and more demanding than anything Leo had attempted before. Surtr watched from within the mental realm, his attention fixed on every detail.
By the time a solid outline existed, the day was nearly over. Leo decided to refine the draft through the night until it was complete.
...
While he worked, Freya issued a search across Asgard for Starfall iron.
Every available craftsman and scout was placed on alert.
At the same time she consulted the king and arranged for the strongest iron stores in the realm, including the Uru metal Surtr had named. She also approached the elves and requested a piece of wood from Yggdrasil.
Separate teams hunted a dragon for its hide and bones as contingency material.
Blacksmiths gathered and began discussing possible methods. Holy priests along with lightning and fire practitioners were summoned to the palace in case the Inverse corruption spread during the repair.
No one outside the core group was told the reason for the materials or the summons. The entire operation remained restricted.
The appointed day arrived.
....
Next day,
Leo, Odin, Freya, and the blacksmiths who would serve as judges descended into the underground chamber.
Mjolnir rested on its pedestal exactly as before. The air inside was cold and thick. Every prepared material and tool stood ready.
Leo approached the hammer.
[Forge-Sight activated.]
