Naturally, the one displeased with Shen Nian’s actions was the snobbish Cao Yuqing.
Especially since, right after she had voiced her disdain for the snacks Wang Chunhua brought, Shen Nian had started eating them and even praised them aloud.
From Cao Yuqing’s perspective, Shen Nian was clearly slapping her in the face. And so, by extension, Cao Yuqing grew to resent Shen Nian as well.
"Hmph, country bumpkin!"
The self-esteem Wang Chunhua had just recovered thanks to Shen Nian was once again thrown to the ground and crushed underfoot by Cao Yuqing. Her eyes instantly grew redder.
Shen Nian reached out and tugged on Wang Chunhua’s arm. When Wang Chunhua looked over, Shen Nian simply met her gaze and shook her head, signaling for her to ignore the comment.
"This is really delicious. I’ve never had dried fish this good before!"
"Really? I live near the sea. My dad catches them, and my mom prepares them. I’ve loved these since I was a kid. I’m so glad you like them!"
Hearing Shen Nian praise the dried fish she’d brought, Wang Chunhua’s eyes instantly lit up, and she completely forgot about Cao Yuqing’s nasty comments from moments before.
Qi Yunzhi glanced at Cao Yuqing, then back at Wang Chunhua and Shen Nian. After a long, internal struggle, her inner foodie won out, and she walked over to Wang Chunhua.
"Is it really that good? Let me try some... Mmm, wow, this actually tastes great!"
Once Qi Yunzhi tried a piece of the dried fish, her eyes lit up, and she couldn’t help but eat a second, and then a third.
Watching the three of them gathered together, Cao Yuqing felt a surge of bitterness. She, who had always been the center of attention, was now being isolated by a couple of country bumpkins. How could she possibly stand for that!
’And Qi Yunzhi, too! Our family backgrounds are clearly on the same level, and I was the first person she got friendly with today. Now she’s actually betrayed me to side with those two country bumpkins. Hmph, she has no taste!’
As these thoughts stewed, Cao Yuqing angrily slammed her things down on the desk, creating a loud bang that made the other three look up at her.
Seeing the three of them sitting side-by-side, all looking at her in unison, made another wave of anger rise in Cao Yuqing. She stood up in a huff, stormed out of the room, and slammed the door behind her.
"Is... is she angry?"
Wang Chunhua looked at Shen Nian, then at Qi Yunzhi, feeling a little worried.
Even Shen Nian frowned. ’For such a young woman, she sure has a huge temper! And more importantly, we absolutely weren’t the ones in the wrong just now.’
"Probably."
Qi Yunzhi stared at the door Cao Yuqing had slammed. Thinking back to the look Cao Yuqing had given her upon leaving, she felt a little uneasy.
’I didn’t even do anything wrong, so what right does she have to look at me with such a blaming glare!’
After storming out, Cao Yuqing didn’t leave the dormitory building. Instead, she went up to the fourth floor to find the room of a good friend she’d grown up with. She needed to vent.
"Jiajia, let me tell you, you won’t believe the kind of people in my dorm! I’m absolutely furious!"
Cao Yuqing burst into her friend Jiang Jiajia’s room and immediately started speaking, her voice fraught with impatience. Only after her outburst did she notice that Jiang Jiajia wasn’t alone. Someone else was sitting across from her.
"Oh, um, excuse me. I was just looking for Jiang Jiajia. I didn’t realize there was someone else here!"
Cao Yuqing looked at the other person in the room and apologized, slightly embarrassed. It wasn’t as if she’d suddenly had a change of heart and become polite.
It was just that, in her eyes, this other person in Jiang Jiajia’s room—from their bearing and looks to their clothes—was clearly extraordinary. Cao Yuqing always made a point to be polite when facing people like that, lest she offend someone she couldn’t afford to.
