Chapter 368: The Only Woman I’ve Provoked Is You
"Don’t tell me... the Chu Family wanted you to be their son-in-law!"
After she said it, the more Shen Nian thought about it, the more likely it seemed.
She could see how much the Chu Family valued Lu Cheng, after all. And they had a daughter. If they really thought so highly of him, the best way to keep him close would be to make him part of the family!
What was a closer bond, an adopted godson or a son-in-law? A son-in-law, of course!
Shen Nian was already convinced she was right, and Lu Cheng’s reaction only confirmed it.
"Looks like I guessed right! Hmph. And you said you wouldn’t hide anything from me! Look at you, hiding something from me right now!"
Shen Nian wasn’t truly angry. It was just the thought of so many people vying for Lu Cheng that left a sour taste in her mouth.
When Lu Cheng saw her expression, his first thought was, ’I’m screwed. My darling’s angry!’ He immediately looked at Shen Nian in a panic and blurted out,
"Xiao Nian, I didn’t deliberately hide it from you."
"Hmph. Since I don’t know the truth, you can just say whatever you want, can’t you!"
"I really didn’t. If you hadn’t brought it up, I would’ve forgotten all about it."
...
Shen Nian stared at Lu Cheng, speechless. ’How could he forget something like that!’
"Uncle Chu and Aunt Lan did have that thought, but they dropped the idea before they even mentioned it to me. It was Yun Ze who brought it up one time when he’d had too much to drink. I didn’t pay it any mind, so there was no way I’d remember it."
"They dropped it without even bringing it up? Why?"
Logically, since the Chu Family liked Lu Cheng so much, they shouldn’t have given up on the idea that easily.
"Probably because Chu Lingxiu wasn’t interested in me."
"Uh..."
Although Shen Nian knew Chu Lingxiu didn’t have those kinds of feelings for Lu Cheng, hearing him say it in such a flat, emotionless tone still made her feel... well...
Shen Nian was certain that Lu Cheng had absolutely no feelings for Chu Lingxiu. Otherwise, his tone wouldn’t have been so placid.
It was one thing to feel upset that so many people liked Lu Cheng. But now, hearing that someone *didn’t* like him—and even looked down on him—Shen Nian suddenly found that she felt a bit upset about that, too.
It was a strange feeling, hard to put into words.
"I really didn’t hide it from you on purpose, Xiao Nian. Please don’t be angry!"
"Alright, alright, I’m not angry! I know Chu Lingxiu doesn’t like you. The one who does is someone else, and she was just standing up for her friend! Spill. Who else have you been charming on the side!"
"What? I haven’t!"
Lu Cheng was surprised. ’So that was why Chu Lingxiu was targeting Shen Nian.’ After his initial shock, he heard her question and quickly shook his head.
"Hmph. I don’t believe you. If you hadn’t gotten involved with someone, why would Chu Lingxiu go to such lengths to stick up for her friend?"
And that wasn’t even touching on Chu Lingxiu’s attitude at the time. It had been obvious she believed her friend was the one who should marry Lu Cheng—and only her friend!
’Could Chu Lingxiu really be so foolish as to stick up for her friend if there was absolutely nothing between her and Lu Cheng? At the very least, that person and Lu Cheng must know each other, right!’
Of course, Shen Nian believed that Lu Cheng wouldn’t deliberately pursue other women. But she couldn’t rule out the possibility of someone realizing how great he was and throwing themselves at him!
"There’s really no one else. The only woman I’ve ever pursued is you. I promise, I swear!"
