Chapter 25: The Vertical Ascent
The two-hour countdown began the moment the heavy blast door of the Rebel Blacksmith's forge sealed shut behind them.
The Vagabond stood in the toxic, humid gloom of the Alleys of Rust, his [Perception +3] trait cutting through the dense smog to map a vertical path upward. The Iron City was not designed for upward mobility. The massive, hydraulic elevators that connected the slums to the industrial heart, and eventually to the pristine Upper Ring, were heavily guarded by the Usurper's militia. Taking the stairs or the lifts was a guaranteed death sentence.
He looked toward the colossal foundational pillars of the city. Winding around one of these massive iron columns was an exterior maintenance scaffolding---a chaotic lattice of rusted pipes, exposed gears, and precarious metal grates that ascended directly into the belly of the Foundry Ring.
"We climb," the Vagabond whispered, his voice a flat, dead calm in the cacophony of the slums.
Shadow didn't hesitate. The juvenile Royal Wolf possessed an innate, predatory understanding of stealth. With a fluid leap that defied its growing mass, Shadow launched onto the first rusted pipe, its claws hooking perfectly into the deteriorating metal.
The Vagabond followed. He did not have the luxury of a safety harness, nor did he possess active mana to cushion a fall. Relying entirely on the monstrous kinetic output of his [STR: 14] and the absolute balance granted by his [DEX: 18], he began to scale the iron pillar.
The ascent was a grueling test of biological endurance. The higher they climbed, the more the ambient temperature skyrocketed. They were entering the Foundry Ring.
The scaffolding shook violently as massive, house-sized gears ground against each other within the pillar. The air here was no longer just toxic; it was physically heavy, thick with the smell of molten slag and burning coal. Through the rusted grating of the catwalks, the Vagabond could see the nightmare of the Usurper's industrial machine. Thousands of bare-chested slaves, their skin stained black with soot, worked the massive blast furnaces under the cracking whips of heavily armored overseers.
The noise was a physical assault. The rhythmic CLANG of industrial trip-hammers striking anvils threatened to shatter his eardrums, but his [Nerve Override] trait engaged, dulling the sensory overload and keeping his heart rate at a slow, calculated rhythm.
Seventy minutes passed. The Vagabond's breath came in steady, measured draws. His silver armor was slick with condensation from the steam vents.
They reached a narrow chokepoint on the scaffolding---a rusted catwalk that bridged the gap between the Foundry Ring and the heavily reinforced underbelly of the Upper Ring. But the path was not clear.
Standing on the catwalk, leaning over the railing with a long, crude iron blade resting on his shoulder, was a Foundry Overseer.
The man was massive, heavily augmented with crude, pneumatic cybernetics replacing his left leg and right eye. Around his neck hung a brass signaling horn. If he saw the Vagabond, he wouldn't even need to fight; a single blow on that horn would summon a dozen militia guards from the adjacent factory floor.
The Vagabond halted in the shadows of a massive steam pipe, fifty feet below the catwalk. He placed a hand on Shadow's head, ordering the beast to hold.
He analyzed the geometry of the kill. He had twenty-one arrows, but shooting upward through the narrow grating was risky; if the arrow deflected off a rusted bar, it would clatter, and the Overseer would look down.
He needed to do this with his bare hands.

The Vagabond waited for the massive industrial trip-hammer in the factory below to strike.
CLANG.
Using the deafening sound to mask his movement, the Vagabond launched himself upward. He vaulted over the rusted pipes, his [DEX: 18] allowing him to move like a striking viper. He reached the edge of the catwalk just as the Overseer turned around, his pneumatic red eye whirring as it detected movement.
The Overseer opened his mouth to shout, his hand reaching for the brass horn.
He was too slow.
The Vagabond surged over the railing. His left hand clamped over the Overseer's mouth with the crushing force of a steel vise, instantly suffocating the shout. Simultaneously, his right hand drew the heavy iron hunting knife from his belt and drove it upward, sliding the blade cleanly under the Overseer's jaw and straight into the brain stem.
The massive man convulsed once, his crude cybernetics sparking, before going entirely limp.
The Vagabond lowered the heavy corpse silently to the rusted grating, wiping his blade on the dead man's tunic.
Suddenly, a strange, profound heat pulsed from the heavy leather book strapped to his hip. It was a sensation he had not felt since Laveria's surgery. In his mind's eye, a line of crisp, blue text materialized.
══════════════════════ ENTITY ELIMINATED ══════════════════════
Target: Foundry Overseer (Augmented).
System Update: Complex System Extraction Protocols Engaged.
Spiritual Energy Harvested: +2 SE.
[COMPANION BOND --- PASSIVE TRANSFER ACTIVE]
SE Redirected to Shadow (Juvenile Growth Phase): −2 SE from harvest
Net SE added to Vagabond ledger: 0
Vagabond Current SE: 5 / 10 (Unchanged)
Arcane Residue Harvested: +1 Mana Point.
Current Mana Pool: [1 / 10 Points to Full Charge].
The Vagabond's cold eyes widened slightly in the gloom. The unformatted anomaly had finally stabilized. The Complex System was no longer just hoarding raw souls; it was aggressively extracting the residual arcane energy from the blood of his enemies. Ten kills. Ten points of mana to forge a single charge for his [Step of Silence]. The economy of death had just evolved.
He stepped over the corpse, signaling Shadow to follow. They had less than twenty minutes left.
The final stretch was a sheer, vertical climb up a massive ventilation shaft that pierced the thick bedrock separating the factories from the elite. The shaft was dormant, waiting to expel the immense pressure of the factories.
The Vagabond pried open the heavy iron grate at the top of the shaft and pulled himself up.
He emerged into a different world.
The oppressive heat, the deafening noise, and the toxic smog vanished instantly. The Upper Ring was devastatingly pristine. The streets were paved with polished white marble. The air was cool and crisp, heavily filtered by massive, humming arcane engines embedded in the pristine architecture. There were no slums here, only grand manors, towering statues of the Usurper King, and absolute silence.
The Vagabond crawled out of the grate, hiding behind a marble fountain shaped like a rearing dragon. Shadow slipped out behind him, the wolf's dark fur standing in stark, violent contrast to the sterile white environment.
A hundred yards away stood his target: The Fourth Garrison Munitions Depot.
It was a brutalist fortress of polished steel and First Kingdom gold, surrounded by a massive courtyard. The Vagabond's [Perception +3] trait immediately detected the subtle, shimmering distortion in the air encompassing the fortress. The Ascension Ward.
Patrolling the pristine white courtyard were the Capital Knights. They moved in perfect, terrifying synchronization, their heavy golden armor gleaming under the artificial arcane streetlamps.
And walking alongside them were the Brass Stalkers.
They were horrors of mechanical engineering. Shaped like massive, skeletal hounds forged of dark brass and steel, they possessed no eyes. Instead, their heads were fitted with glowing red thermal lenses, and their heavy paws clicked rhythmically against the marble, sensing every vibration in the earth.
The Vagabond checked the position of the artificial light above. He felt the subtle rumble vibrating through the marble beneath his boots.
The pressure in the city's underbelly had reached its absolute critical mass.
The Vagabond drew the heavy [Tungsten Extraction Chisel] with his left hand, and his hunting knife with his right. He looked at Shadow. The juvenile Royal Wolf's dark violet mist was tightly suppressed, its muscles coiled like heavy springs, ready to sprint.
Deep within the bowels of the Iron City, an apocalyptic alarm began to sound.
WHRRRRRRRRR-OOOOOOM.
The marble beneath them shook violently. The massive exhaust vents surrounding the Upper Ring suddenly blew open with the force of a volcanic eruption.
The "Hour of Ash" had begun.
Millions of tons of hyper-dense, black industrial smog violently erupted into the pristine air of the Upper Ring. In a fraction of a second, the glowing streetlamps were entirely swallowed. The crisp air turned to choking soot. The deafening roar of the pressure release drowned out the frantic shouts of the Capital Knights.
The Upper Ring was plunged into absolute, chaotic darkness.
The Vagabond didn't hesitate. With three minutes on the clock, he burst from behind the marble fountain, sprinting directly toward the shimmering, invisible wall of the Ascension Ward.
