The Great Overthrow [A Souls-like LitRPG]

Chapter 24: The War Room

"Tell me the guard rotations," the Vagabond said, his voice completely devoid of any hesitation. "And tell me how to bypass the wards."

Kaelen the Rebel Blacksmith stood utterly still for a long moment, the roaring white flames of the hyper-pressurized arcane furnace casting deep, flickering shadows across his scarred face. His mechanical left arm whirred softly, the blue arcane wiring pulsing in time with his heartbeat. He looked at the heavily armed mercenary, then down to the juvenile Royal Shadow-Wolf sitting obediently at his boots, and finally back to the soiled schematic map pinned to the cavern wall.

"You don't even blink, do you?" Kaelen muttered, a rough, incredulous laugh escaping his chest. "You walk into my forge covered in the toxic sludge of a dead river, your mana is entirely depleted, you are wearing armor salvaged from a murdered First Kingdom ghost, and you immediately ask for the tactical layout of the most heavily fortified military installation in this miserable city. You are either the bravest mercenary left in the Great Land, or you are completely, irreversibly insane."

"I am a man without a blade," the Vagabond replied coldly, unhooking the Whisperer's Recurve from his shoulder and leaning it against a heavy iron workbench. He stepped closer to the map, his silver armor catching the furnace's light. "In my profession, a man without a blade is already a corpse. We are simply negotiating the terms of my resurrection. The map, Kaelen. Explain it to me."

The blacksmith let out a heavy sigh, shaking his head. He reached over with his organic hand, picking up a piece of blackened charcoal, and stepped up to the massive, grimy parchment.

"If we are going to plan a suicide mission, you need to understand the anatomy of the beast you are trying to infiltrate," Kaelen began, tapping the charcoal against the lowest section of the map. "The Iron City is not a single, flat sprawl. It is a vertical hierarchy, designed to keep the filth at the bottom and the Usurper's elite at the top. We are currently in the Alleys of Rust. The bedrock. This is where the slaves, the exiles, and the condemned live and die. Above us, suspended on massive iron pillars, is the Foundry Ring."

He drew a thick black line across the middle of the schematic.

"The Foundry Ring is the industrial heart of the city," Kaelen continued. "It is a labyrinth of massive blast furnaces, assembly lines, and weapon factories. It is deafeningly loud, constantly burning, and choked with toxic smoke. The workers there are technically free citizens, but they are worked to the bone to supply the Usurper's armies. The heat is unbearable, and visibility is barely twenty feet due to the smog."

Kaelen then moved the charcoal to the very top of the map, drawing a circle around a large, heavily fortified plateau.

"And then there is the Upper Ring," Kaelen said, his voice darkening with venom. "Built atop colossal reinforced struts, piercing through the canopy of industrial smoke. Up there, the air is clean, filtered by massive arcane engines. The streets are paved with white stone, and the architecture is flawless. It is where the aristocrats, the military generals, and the Capital Knights reside. It is a world entirely separate from the hell we are standing in."

The Vagabond's cold eyes traced the distance between the Alleys of Rust and the Upper Ring on the map. "The Fourth Garrison Munitions Depot is up there."

"Right in the center of the military sector," Kaelen confirmed, tapping a specific, jagged square inside the Upper Ring. "It is a fortress within a fortress. The Blood-Steel ingots are kept in the subterranean vault beneath the depot. Now, let's talk about why infiltrating it is considered mathematically impossible."

Kaelen turned to face the Vagabond, leaning his heavy frame against the workbench.

"The first obstacle is the Ascension Ward," the blacksmith explained, crossing his thick arms. "The Usurper King is paranoid. He ordered his High Mages to cast a permanent, invisible dome of magical detection over the entire Upper Ring, with a secondary, concentrated dome directly over the Munitions Depot. The ward is essentially an arcane net. It scans the soul signature of every living creature that passes through it."

The Vagabond frowned, his [Perception +3] trait making him hyper-aware of the subtle hum of the core-stone resting on the anvil nearby. "If I walk through it, an alarm sounds?"

"Normally, yes. Instantly," Kaelen nodded. "The ward is designed to detect two things: Class designations and high mana concentrations. If an unregistered Mage, Assassin, or Warrior tries to cross the threshold, the ward reads their formatted Class and triggers the Capital Knights. If someone tries to mask their Class but carries a massive pool of mana, the ward detects the magical density and sets off the alarms."

Kaelen paused, a slow, grim smile spreading across his scarred face. He looked at the heavy, petrified leather book strapped to the Vagabond's hip.

This tale has been unlawfully lifted without the author's consent. Report any appearances on Amazon.

"But Laveria's message claimed you are a biological anomaly," Kaelen said, stepping closer. "You never selected a Class. You underwent an unformatted Ascension. And according to your physical state right now, you are completely drained. You don't have a single drop of active mana in your core, do you?"

The Vagabond placed his left hand over the Magic Book. He didn't need to open the eight-page matrix to know the truth.

"My mana is entirely depleted," the Vagabond confirmed. "I burned it all to survive the First Kingdom ruins."

"Then you are a ghost to the system," Kaelen whispered, awe bleeding into his gravelly voice. "You have no formatted Class for the ward to read, and you have no active mana pool for it to detect. To the Ascension Ward, you are not a threat. You are essentially a blank space. A void walking through the net. That is why Laveria kept you alive. You are the only mercenary in the Great Land who can walk through the Usurper's front door without tripping the arcane alarms."

"The wards are blind to me," the Vagabond stated, analyzing the tactical advantage. "But the guards are not."

"Precisely," Kaelen agreed, returning to the map. "Magic won't stop you, but steel will. The Munitions Depot is guarded by a rotating shift of forty Capital Knights. They patrol the outer perimeter, the inner courtyard, and the vault entrance. Furthermore, the courtyard is patrolled by Brass Stalkers---First Kingdom mechanical hounds, repurposed by the Usurper's engineers. They don't have eyes, but they hunt by detecting thermal signatures and vibrations. Your stealth skills will fool the knights, but they will not fool the hounds."

Shadow, upon hearing the word 'hounds', let out a low, territorial rumble from the back of his throat. The juvenile wolf's dark violet mist flared slightly, sensing a rival predator in the mechanical beasts.

"Quiet, Shadow," the Vagabond commanded softly, before looking back at the blacksmith. "A fortress guarded by forty elite knights and thermal-tracking machines. There is no such thing as a perfect defense, Kaelen. Every system has a blind spot. Every rotation has a gap. Find it for me."

Kaelen looked at the mercenary with a mixture of respect and disbelief. He picked up the charcoal again.

"The gap is environmental," Kaelen said, drawing a series of arrows pointing from the Foundry Ring up toward the Upper Ring. "The Usurper's factories run relentlessly, twenty-four hours a day. The massive steam pressure and toxic exhaust build up inside the Foundry Ring. To prevent the factories from detonating, the city engineers initiate a massive pressure release twice a day. The workers call it the 'Hour of Ash'."

Kaelen tapped the map forcefully.

"For exactly three minutes, the primary exhaust vents blow thousands of tons of hyper-dense, black industrial smog directly upward," the blacksmith explained. "The smog is so thick it temporarily overwhelms the arcane filters of the Upper Ring. The streets go pitch black. The noise of the pressure release is deafening, like a continuous thunderclap. During those three minutes, the Capital Knights cannot see beyond their own hands, and the Brass Stalkers' thermal sensors are completely blinded by the sudden surge of ambient heat."

"A three-minute window of absolute sensory deprivation," the Vagabond calculated, his cold mind already mapping the route. "When is the next release?"

Kaelen reached into his heavy leather apron and pulled out a tarnished, brass pocket watch. He flicked it open, glancing at the ticking hands.

"In exactly two hours," Kaelen said, snapping the watch shut.

"Then I have two hours to climb from the Alleys of Rust, bypass the Foundry Ring, and position myself at the perimeter wall of the Munitions Depot in the Upper Ring," the Vagabond stated, mentally organizing the logistics.

"Yes," Kaelen nodded. "Once the Hour of Ash triggers, you will have exactly one hundred and eighty seconds to cross the open courtyard, bypass the blinded knights and hounds, and enter the subterranean vault before the smog clears and the air is filtered. If you are caught in the open when the smoke settles, forty knights will spear you to the cobblestones."

"And the vault itself?" the Vagabond asked, pressing for the final piece of the puzzle.

"The vault is secured by a heavy mechanical lock, not magic," Kaelen said, walking over to a wooden chest resting in the corner of the forge. He opened it and pulled out a strange, heavy metallic instrument. It looked like a cross between a crowbar and a massive, complex tuning fork, glowing with faint blue runes.

Kaelen walked back and handed the heavy tool to the Vagabond.

"This is a [Tungsten Extraction Chisel]," Kaelen explained. "Blood-Steel is incredibly heavy and dense. It is stored in raw ingots. You cannot simply hack a piece off with a dagger, and you cannot carry a fifty-pound block of it while trying to sneak past an army. When you find the Blood-Steel, place the prongs of this chisel against the metal and strike the back of it hard. The runes will temporarily soften the ore, allowing you to extract a small, concentrated shard. That shard is all I need to forge your Catalyst."

The Vagabond weighed the heavy tungsten tool in his left hand, feeling the intricate runes etched into the metal. He slipped it securely into the leather belt at his waist, right next to his quiver.

He did the mental math one final time. He had twenty-one armor-piercing iron-tipped arrows. He had no mana to power his Step of Silence. He had two Complete Energies remaining to heal any catastrophic wounds, and five Spiritual Energies sitting uselessly in his ledger. He was relying entirely on his unformatted physical attributes, his mundane skills, and the tactical synergy with his juvenile Royal Wolf.

"Shadow," the Vagabond called out.

The dark wolf stood up instantly, shaking its thick, muscular frame, its golden and violet eyes locking onto its master. The beast was ready for violence.

"The mechanical hounds hunt by thermal signature," the Vagabond said to Kaelen, his hand resting on his bow. "Shadow's body temperature runs incredibly high due to his mutated royal blood. When the three-minute window opens, if a hound gets too close, I will use Shadow to draw their sensors away from me."

"A risky play," Kaelen noted grimly. "If the wolf makes too much noise, the knights will fire blindly into the smog."

"Then we will ensure the hounds die quietly," the Vagabond replied, his voice a flat, dead calm. He turned away from the map and walked toward the massive, heavy blast door of the forge.

"Vagabond," Kaelen called out, stopping the mercenary at the threshold. The giant blacksmith looked at him with a weary, heavy expression. "The Upper Ring is a different world. The knights up there do not fight like the ghouls in the crypts. They are disciplined, ruthless, and heavily armored. Do not engage them. Steal the ore, and vanish."

"I am a ghost to the system, Kaelen," the Vagabond said without looking back. "I intend to remain one."

The Vagabond reached out and pulled the heavy iron lever, disengaging the deadbolts. The massive blast door hissed and swung open, revealing the dark, polluted labyrinth of the Alleys of Rust.

The Vagabond stepped out into the toxic smog, Shadow flanking him perfectly. He looked upward, past the rusted catwalks and leaking pipes, toward the massive, heavily fortified ceiling of the industrial underbelly. The Upper Ring awaited. The heist for the Blood-Steel had begun.
