Chapter 239: The Difference Between Mutation and Orthodox Training to Become Stronger
Matthew could tell that Lilith truly held no ill will toward Carrie.
Quite the opposite. She sincerely hoped Carrie would walk the path she had arranged, inherit Lilith's authority, and become the next Queen of Hell.
Lilith was different from other demons.
Toward humans, and toward demons other than herself, she was extremely cruel and would use any means necessary.
But there was no doubt that toward the children she had given birth to, she was sincere.
Emotion was the source of her strength. Because of that, Lilith possessed a bug-level ability similar to a "more children, more blessings" system.
The more outstanding and powerful her children were, the stronger she would become along with them.
Carrie was the most outstanding one among those who had inherited Lilith's demon bloodline, and her potential was extraordinary.
Naturally, Lilith hoped Carrie would activate her bloodline sooner and become stronger.
But Matthew did not want that to happen in such a rough way.
There were simply too many unstable factors.
This was where the Marvel universe differed from orthodox cultivation worlds.
Most people here gained extraordinary power through mutation, awakening, serum injections, bloodline activation, and other similar means.
But when a fragile mortal suddenly gained the power to destroy the world overnight, what was the price?
More often than not, they lost themselves.
If they had an unhappy childhood, a difficult life, or buried their negative emotions deep inside, the chances of them losing control would only grow.
Not everyone had the kind of character Steve Rogers possessed.
More people would become Red Skull, or those HYDRA super-soldiers who were frozen after being injected with serum.
Ambition and desire would be magnified without limit.
Emotion would be compressed without limit, until in the end, they became beasts who looked down on life and cared only about their own interests.
Carrie was the same.
Carrie was born with extraordinary power. Since the time she was an infant, she had possessed that limit. She was born with supernatural abilities.
She was a natural-born witch.
If Carrie had not been kind by nature, then after being abused throughout childhood by her mother, who had been deeply brainwashed and used cruel suppression against her, the final result would have been the birth of a young witch.
To put it plainly, she would have become a teenage female Homelander.
Bullying?
She could have wiped out everyone around her in a matter of minutes. If things had gone even worse, she might have ended up like the Joker or Jigsaw.
Carrie's nature was kind and gentle.
But she didn't have the unshakable will and convictions of someone like Steve Rogers.
At the end of the day, she was still just a child, easily influenced by the world around her.
Kindness had its limits. Once those limits were pushed too far, the power she awakened would become truly terrifying.
So why had Lilith possessed Carrie's mother back then? Why had she forced Carrie to watch innocent people being slaughtered, making her try to save them again and again, only to fail every time?
Because Lilith wanted to use that helplessness and despair born from repeated failure to force Carrie's bloodline to awaken.
The greater the fall from kindness into evil, the more terrifying the power it unleashed.
San Venganza was a perfect example. Mephisto had personally orchestrated its fall.
Those who had once held unwavering faith in God unleashed such immense power after falling that even Mephisto coveted it.
In the end, Lilith was still a demon.
Everything she believed and understood was shaped by a demon's perspective.
What was kindness?
In Hell, it was a joke. It would only get one devoured alive by other demons, ending in a fate far worse than death.
A demon had to be evil. A demon had to have great power. No matter what method was used to obtain that power, it was worth any price.
Only that way could one survive in Hell.
If Matthew had not been involved, this would indeed have made sense.
After all, if events had followed the original timeline, Carrie would eventually have activated her bloodline and slaughtered that entire area.
Human civilization would not have been able to tolerate Carrie. Even Kamar-Taj would not have let her go.
Imprisonment, exile, or death—there would have been no other options.
But Matthew's appearance changed Carrie's fate.
As an anomaly, Matthew gave Carrie a new choice. A better, brighter choice.
It would not make Carrie lose her sense of self, nor would it erase the kindness at her core.
She would have her own personality.
Which path would Carrie choose?
Without question, it would never be the path Lilith had arranged.
In the end, this was a clash between two completely different beliefs—Lilith's and Matthew's.
This was exactly what Matthew had told Lilith the first time.
And it was the same now.
His stance had not changed at all.
A fierce light flashed through Lilith's eyes, but when she met Matthew's firm gaze, it returned to calm.
For a moment, only silence remained.
As for Mephisto, he was happily watching the show, standing there leisurely with his arms crossed, glancing from Matthew to Lilith and back again.
He was just short of holding a handful of melon seeds and cracking them open.
The next Queen of Hell? Lilith's human descendant… Tsk. Is it that girl named Carrie? Mephisto mused as he spectated.
Matthew seemed to value that girl a great deal.
Perhaps there was something he could do with this.
Of course, Mephisto had no bad intentions. That human girl named Carrie was not only valued by Matthew, she was also the descendant Lilith valued most.
Lilith even planned to train her into the next Queen of Hell.
If Mephisto made any small moves, there was a high chance Lilith and Matthew would team up to beat him together.
On the other hand, if he showed goodwill through Carrie, he might gain favor from both sides.
The profit margin on that was simply too large.
A bloody win.
And so, Mephisto spoke.
"Perhaps this is not truly a conflict."
His words drew both Matthew's and Lilith's gazes.
Facing the eyes of one human and one demon, Mephisto remained calm and looked at Lilith. "You want your descendant to become powerful."
Then he looked at Matthew.
"And you want her to keep herself."
"So clearly, this is only a matter of time."
Mephisto's words sounded a little roundabout, but both Matthew and Lilith were sharp enough to understand what he meant.
Matthew's expression did not change.
Lilith, however, frowned slightly.
"So?"
"The Book of Hell," Mephisto said.
Lilith's eyes flickered, but she did not speak.
Matthew was the same.
"You and I recorded it together—the bloodline authority book belonging to the Mother of All Demons. You hoped to use it to activate the bloodline in that girl's body."
"But why rush?"
"The Emperor of Terra has arranged a path for her mainly based on white magic. Lilith, you can wait. Wait for her to grow, and then give the Book of Hell to her. Isn't that right?"
Mephisto spread his hands, looking as if he truly did not understand what they were arguing about.
"Can you really not wait a few years? My dear Lilith, human emotion is also a kind of power. Often, only by grasping emotion can one unleash strength beyond imagination—especially when she is protected by the Emperor of Terra."
Lilith fell silent.
She understood Mephisto's subtle advice.
Stop looking for trouble. Isn't having a future ally much better than making an enemy?
"Fine!"
After briefly weighing her options, Lilith made her choice and stepped down.
The corner of Matthew's mouth curved slightly upward.
