Chapter 224: Ancient One: Do Not Abandon Your Original Intention, Great Emperor of Terra
"Greed and desire never stop, Matthew. For an existence like Dormammu, that is even more true."
Ancient One gently shook her folding fan, looking completely leisurely. There was not the slightest trace of distress or worry from discovering Dormammu's movements.
It was as if the matter had nothing to do with her at all.
"Yeah, very profound," Matthew replied perfunctorily to this number-one big sister patron who loved acting all mysterious, then frowned.
"Kaecilius is already dead. How could he have found another representative so quickly?"
That's right. Representatives were something every big shot with any status liked to have.
Among humans, the polite term was representative. In reality, they were nothing more than proxies.
Many things were the same, no matter the level.
The higher dimensions were no different.
Those beings wanted to scheme on Earth, but because their true bodies couldn't descend, they simply found a representative.
To put it bluntly—a lackey.
Kaecilius had been the representative Dormammu personally chose. One representative had died, and now the other side had already found another one in such a short time?
Matthew did not believe it.
This was not him boasting. Although Matthew might still be some distance away from the Skyfather level, he was by no means ordinary anymore.
He lived in New York, so many things within New York could not bypass his perception.
Although he did not release Observation Haki every moment, as long as there was even the slightest abnormal energy fluctuation, he would capture it.
Even Dormammu could not avoid that.
Home-field advantage was unreasonable like that.
"He probably isn't a representative Dormammu chose long ago," the Ancient One said calmly, as though she had already figured out the other party's identity.
Not Dormammu's representative?
Matthew raised a brow. His mind immediately went to a certain unlucky bastard.
"Mephisto?"
"Mm-hm."
The Ancient One opened her folding fan and held it near her mouth, as if hiding a laugh. Matthew pretended not to see it.
After smiling for a moment, the Ancient One closed her fan and spoke seriously. "In 2002, a boy named Parker Robbins accidentally killed a demon. From that demon, he obtained two items—a red cloak and a pair of magic boots."
"He put on those two items, which was equivalent to signing a contract."
Her explanation was brief and clear, but she deliberately emphasized the word "accidentally."
Matthew immediately understood. This was obviously Mephisto's style.
Accidentally?
Clearly, Mephisto had arranged it on purpose.
Otherwise, how could an ordinary person so easily kill a demon?
Let alone conveniently loot equipment afterward.
Did they think he was some chosen child of destiny?
Then, recalling that he had sensed Dormammu's dark power, Matthew immediately understood.
He could not help turning his head toward the Ancient One.
Sure enough, the corners of the woman's lips were slightly raised.
Matthew let out a sudden laugh. "Dormammu stole Mephisto's representative?"
What an unlucky bastard.
"He was only one backup option. There are a few more people like him."
The Ancient One waved her fan. The moment she imagined Mephisto's helplessly furious expression right now, she could not help finding it funny.
No matter how calm as still water one usually was, when encountering something this ridiculous, it was still hard not to laugh.
"So Dormammu is punishing Mephisto." Matthew caught the key point hidden inside.
During the Manhattan incident, Mephisto's attitude of showing up without truly contributing had already made Dormammu very dissatisfied.
"And it is also a warning," the Ancient One added.
"Demons survive through opportunism. They move with the wind. In the matter of Kaecilius, Mephisto chose you, and that angered Dormammu. So this is his warning."
"Alright. Whether it's punishment or a warning, we still need to find this Mr. Parker first." Matthew clapped his hands. "Let's see... his alias is the Hood."
The Ancient One looked at him, her gaze deep.
A coincidence? No, it seemed this child truly had other secrets she did not know about.
"I must trouble you with this matter, Matthew."
"So, Sorcerer Supreme, you intend to simply wash your hands of this? Matthew spread his hands like a little bear, looking surprised.
Seeing this, the Ancient One smiled softly and replied as if it were only natural, "When you decided to become the Emperor of mankind, this became the responsibility you must bear, Matthew."
"Kamar-Taj may one day become history because of you, but I am very happy, and I look forward to it."
"I will witness the name of Terra resounding through the multiverse. I will witness the Emperor's radiance shining upon your people."
"Do not abandon your journey—not only for yourself, but also for those who care for you and are loyal to you."
"Please, never abandon your original intention, great Emperor of Terra, Matthew Brown."
In those final words, the Ancient One's voice carried unprecedented solemnity and seriousness.
As her voice fell, her figure slowly faded and disappeared.
What she left Matthew with was a pair of eyes filled with expectation.
Matthew looked down at the corpses below, at their faces frozen in fear, at the guns scattered across the floor and the blood flowing over the ground. Outside, the howling wind and snow seemed to be whispering something.
"Tch. Are you truly resolved to depart?" Matthew murmured. "You never abandoned your own journey either, Sorcerer Supreme."
His number-one big sister patron was putting pressure on him. What could Matthew do?
Of course, he could only accept it happily.
Responsibility—whether Matthew wanted it or not, as long as he still considered himself human and still had ties to this world, his position was basically unshakable.
The failed man, soul mentor Uncle Ben, had that classic line: with great power comes great responsibility.
On the surface, it sounded like moral coercion.
But in truth, it contained a kind of underlying logic. Especially in this universe where demons, gods, and monsters all existed, that logic became even more accurate.
Since he had this kind of ability, unless he chose to turn a blind eye, he would inevitably have to shoulder the responsibility.
It was the kind he could not escape from even if he wanted to.
The higher his dimension became, the more the eyes of high-dimensional beings beyond Earth would inevitably fall on him.
Even if he wanted to hide like a turtle, he still had to see whether others would allow it.
Of course, responsibility did not equal obligation. Matthew had chosen a different path. He could shoulder responsibility, but as for obligation—he could do without it.
Obligation could be left to his loyal soldiers.
In any case, Reacher and the others liked that sort of responsibility very much.
Today's incident was a perfect example.
Matthew happily decided to hand it over to his loyal Grand Marshal, Reacher.
Then he slipped away—without the slightest hesitation.
After returning to the manor, he sent an order to Terra's capital, Novi Grad.
Yes, Sokovia had been renamed Terra, but Matthew had left the city names unchanged.
That could be considered leaving the original Sokovians something to remember.
While Matthew continued taking it easy, Reacher immediately sprang into action.
Novi Grad City Hall.
After receiving Matthew's communication and seeing the order inside it, Reacher waved his hand.
How could such a small mission possibly require the great Grand Marshal of the three armies, Lord Reacher, to personally take action?
Naturally, it would be handed to his subordinates.
And this mission was taken over by Jessica and Skye.
The two young girls had been training a little too hard lately and decided to take on a mission as a way to unwind.
